The solo tour wound up being a show that was really special to me. His solo show in Chicago played a bar called Martyrs, and he told us that the last few weeks of the tour had a ton of rain, and it was a beautiful night. He offered us a choice of a regular encore or he could put on an acoustic guitar and all of us could "take a walk." Naturally, the audience chose "let's all go for a walk" and he and his whole audience walked a few blocks up and down Lincoln Avenue. Every few doors he'd gather everyone around and play a song. After a few songs we went back to Martyrs and he did a few last songs on electric guitar to finish the set. It was just a really cool evening, and such a great thing for him to take a chance and do something a little different. Just saw the current lineup and loved it -- they still sound great.

My first concert. 1982, Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, Long Island, NY. Squeeze was the headliner. I was 14 and thought they were absolutely the best band ever. I wore out three different cassettes of East Side Story and prided myself on knowing all the words to Piccadilly (or at least thought I did! Try figuring out the line of "adult films and Trini Lopez" without Google-doh!). They headlined and the opening acts were a little known band out of Athens, GA called REM who you couldn't understand and bounced around on stage like some kind of weird mop tied to a pogo stick. The next act was far superior and still gets my blood pumping-The English Beat! Ranking Roger OWNED the stage! So good, so cool, so fun. Makes me want to go back but then I think about my bad skin, dorky haircut, and braces and think better of it. Thanks for the memories!

It was shunted 'round the schedules and I thought that my next favourite band would be along any minute so I didn't need those that have gone to reform. Well now it's several years since I've had a new favourite band because the industry find it easier to promote a single person be it reality star, rapper or sportsperson. What they should have had was someone like McCartney or Wilco Johnson to remind people that sooner or later they won't be able to reform. Can you imagine them trying to make this show now. In their very early days I went to watch Squeeze at Dingwalls at Camden Lock, circa 1977, when they were still playing pubs. There were not many people in a fairly unresponsive audience - maybe 50. As Squeeze were finishing their set, a few people finally decided to show a bit of appreciation with a few whoops, claps and whistles. The band were not impressed. 'Yeah, whoo, whoo, you c***s. I've had more fun p***ing on people down the Kings Road,' was how Tillbrook put it, as they stormed off. They created some brilliant songs.

BR is a great concept but as you hear in most episodes, and if you've ever been in a serious band that's had some degree of success then broke up, it really is like a marriage or relationship. Multiple personalities, egos, clashes, and grievances come into play. It's not as simple as getting everyone onstage to jam. These band members have history with each other that isn't all peaches and cream. A lot of bruiser egos, slights, jealousies, and resentments. And that's just among the band's that do agree to reunite. Others have put their past behind them and moved onto bigger things and just won't do it.
