I remember reading years ago that when Arnold Palmer was asked what is the single best thing that amateur golfers can do to improve their swing, his answer was surprising- “When you’re driving your car, do mini-sets of gripping the steering wheel as hard as you can, especially with the bottom 3 fingers of the lead hand.” Nothing new under the sun. Great lesson, Shawn.

Agree 100% that grip pressure is key. I go by the Moe Norman quote where he stated to grip the golf club (his left hand since he was a RH player) as though he is trying to squeeze the blood out of a turnip. It works!

It only increases the tension if you pinch with your forefinger and thumb, which engages the muscles on the top of your forearm. If you only increase the pressure in the fingers Mr Hogan said to, the last three of your lead hand and the middle two of your trail hand, it doesn't add tension to your arm swing. Then you can grip more firmly and swing freely. Just as Mr Hogan said, activating the trail hand forefinger and thumb has ruined more golf swings than anything else.

Hey Shawn, So I think 50 yrd pitch shot 1 (soft pressure) versus 50 yrd pitch shot 2 (firm pressure) where very very different swings and speeds. Pressure 1 almost requires the soft floaty pitch with the ball roll out where pressure 2 requires the faster and lower release with the hard check.

Very interesting. Pete Cowen talks about how people have no club face stability and to do the towel drill where you ring out the towel to get equal and opposite force on the club face, I think that achieves similar as the clamping down in this video
@golflessons

Well, you have to clamp down on the towel to wring it out; Matt Fitzpatrick and Ryan Moore are similar with super strong lead hands and neutral trail hands and that can definitely be their own physicality. As for golf grip ( hold ) pressure , buy a gripper and work your hands . The stronger your hands are , the lighter you hold the club . The weaker your grip , the more you need to hold a bit tighter , but with all grips , naturally ones grip will hold tighter to handle the forcing of the club outward pull. Scale of 1-10 maybe 5 . Gripping to hard forces one to muscle the club and end up killing the shots. If you throw a baseball , you would never hold it tight . Same with a baseball bat . It naturally will apply pressure on its own. You never want the arms to get tight in the act of swinging, throwing , chopping wood etc.

When I clamp down on the golf grip (with emphasis on isolating and using my fingers only), it actually immobilizes and locks my wrists. Also, it actually adversely affects and inhibits the proper rotation of the forearms in the golf swing. How do you do this???? I feel like a freak???? Yikes!

I have a prototype Shawn Clement instruction grip. Unfortunately, my wrists and forearms, even shoulders, are adversely affected or progressively tightens and restricts natural movement when clamping down on the grip. I applied the technique to using a hammer, and also a sledge hammer. I could not use either instrument functionally when I clamped down on the grip or handle. However, it is only natural to apply more grip pressure when more force is required to complete “heavier” tasks. But the entire body naturally reacts to the necessary task, which typically restricts the mobility of the wrists, arms, shoulders, etc., given the appropriate force required to complete the swing or task. I found that I cannot isolate gripping and clamping down on the golf grip that promotes or allows the necessary biomechanics of my wrists, forearms, shoulders, and rest of my body, when swing a golf club given the required shot at hand, let alone attempting to hit the ball farther. Grip pressure, moreso clamping down on the golf grip, did not increase my clubhead speed nor shot distance, let alone sacrificing accuracy of the shot.
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 ай бұрын
@@HHHWLH sounds like you are definitely overdoing it; everyone interprets things differently; so do this: swing back and through without stopping for 4 or 5 swings and monitor what grip pressure you need for the hands. Ot to move on the club but also get the full release in there;
@Vnam72
@Vnam72 5 ай бұрын
Thanks. I thought if you gripped it too tight your forearms etc would be too tense?
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 ай бұрын
Forearms are the ones that regulate grip pressure, yes! But it stops there as you can swing from the shoulder sockets all day long! Like if you tossed a 5 LBS kettle bell horse shoe style 15 yards and then had to toss a 20 LBS kettle bell the same distance, you would mot use arm force, you would use the legs; but the arms are still swinging freely from the shoulder sockets! 😀👍

The problem with discussing grip pressure is that theres no way of measuring it. Someone with strong hands probably does feel like they're carrying a bird. someone with weak hands would need to feel like they're squeezing the life out of it. Its all subjective. I think i probably need to firm it up a bit.

Big fan of Shawn Clement's ideas, but this one is contrary to so many teachings I've received. One is that a firm grip increases the tension in your arms, which in turn retards your clubhead speed. Another is that callouses on your hand indicate you're gripping the club too hard. Ben Hogan, I've been told, had some of the softest hands in golf. Hard to achieve that with firm, tight grips. Still, I'll experiment with this indoors, and see what happens.

Tennis serve is the same, you have to toss a static ball into action and then react and deliver to a target with a specific feel. The toss is in relation to the direction you want to serve. The only thing different is that the ball is on the ground and the court changes on every shot and we have 14 different tools to deliver to our targets and use our adaptation machine to conquer the challenge. Both amazing games played by amazing machines!

1-you need to hold the club PROPERLY to leverage the hands; then depending on the shot, you will have some grips firm and some less; what this video is for are the golfers out there who are so loose on the club that the grip falls apart and I see this way too often in my teachings all over the world.
