i went through a period of buying and selling for about a decade. I tried dozens of guitars under $1000 and had about 5 Classic Vibes. Each one was excellent and as a person who started in the 80s when guitars were either expensive or garbage I was very impressed.

I've had 4 classic vibes and they've all been tremendous. I picked up a Classic Vibe 70's strat last year quite cheap and had a really great time modifying it. I've got a Fender American Pro II Strat which is a very nice guitar but that Squier strat is much closer to it than you'd expect given the price difference.

What mods did you do that were worth it? Or not worth it?
@fuzzmountain7583
@fuzzmountain7583 Жыл бұрын
@@kristfur None were necessary to be clear. I upgraded the electronics to my liking. The original pickups were quite nice tough. Better pots and pickups selector switch was a good one. I changed the cosmetics to my liking. I did some fretwork to make a good neck great and decked the bridge because I didn't want to use the vibrato. They were all worth it to me because I got to personalize it. I'd say if you can do the work yourself mod to your hearts content but in my opinion it's not necessary to invest a bunch of money into them because they are good guitars out of the box.

My classic vibe 50's telecaster is the guitar I grab most often. Plays great, sounds great. I did replace the pots, switch and tone cap. I've owned Japanese fender 50's teles and American ones and the C.V. holds its own.

I have a 2013 classic vibe '60s jazz bass and a 2020 Squier bullet telecaster, both completely stock and they feel, play and sound just as good as my Fender models and custom builds. Keep these videos coming, I appreciate the honesty you put into them. Where other reviews are scripted by the manufacturer and those guys are playing the part of corporate yes boys. In the last few years I think both Squier and Epiphone have really come on leaps and bounds. The designs are a bit more interesting than some of the models offered by their parent companies.

Squier has been upping the ante since 2005 and keep improving! I’m not a real Gibson fan. I’ve had them and Fender but always seem to enjoy their imports more. Go figure🤪🤪🤪 The affinity of this model also looks like a good buy. I had the affinity Starcaster and it was enjoyable but alas an acquired taste that I couldn’t overcome the headstock but it played well!

it's a fact that the modern day classic vibe squire's and " new " 2020 inspired by gibson epiphones are absolute good guitars and that with some upgraded parts you will have an guitar that's on par with the american made production line fenders and gibsons ( maybe even with the custom range , although that's maybe reaching to far ) , but anyway's , cost / perfomance wise , these guitars deliver big time . on another note : it is funny though how taste will differ , i really hate tele's with 2 humbuckers and a strat headstock : ) , i can understand and like a humbucker in the neck position on a tele , but i really want to see the tele headstock , great work as alway's colin , cheers , greets from holland

That’s bullshit. You can mod a Squier all you want and follow along with the idiots on the message boards that swear by it, but at the end of the day you’re just dressing up a Squier. You will never convince me that a Pao Farro fingerboard feels as good as a quality Maple or Rosewood. I’ve tried modding my fair share of Squiers (including a J Mascis JM) and at the end of the day, i rarely play any of them anymore because they just don’t play nearly as well as some of my higher quality and pricier guitars.

Loved that video - great to hear someone enthusing about their 'thing', especially if the thing is guitars! My first 'child' was a Squire - an '83 Strat purchased in '84, lovingly cradled on the bus all the way home at the time - it's had a few tiny dinks and scratches along the way, but haven't we all? - it's a sign of having lived a life, and like it's owner, needs a bit of a spruce up now and then. I'm no player, just love being able to noodle a bit and learn some of my favourite songs. I've since acquired a Gibson and a couple of Fenders, and I'll buy a few more yet, but the '83 Squire Strat will be the one that's buried with me.....hopefully all in good time....! Cheers to you all!

I just got into guitar in my 30's and all of mine so far are Squiers. I've got the J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster, The CV 70's Strat and a bullet tele. When I take them in to get setup, the guys at my local shop are always blown away by the quality of them. They can't believe they're under 500 bucks. I think my next one will be the Squier Paranormal Super-Sonic (which might be neat to take a look at, kind of a weird one), but this CV 70's Tele deluxe is definitely next up after that.

Great video. I too was spending a small fortune on collecting Gretch guitars. I have recently retired. The past couple of months I purchased a Vintage brand V100 HH and a 59 limited edition Epiphone Les Paul. What craftsmanship for a fraction of the cost. The quality far surpasses the cost of the 2 guitars. Please keep the videos coming.

G&L are very good guitars. The neck profile up near and beyond the nut is so comfortable. How do you like the humbucker in the neck position? I haven't opened mine up yet to determine the pot value or cap value on the humbucker, but mine sounds a bit dark and muffled. Other than that, love mine in blonde with tortoise guard.😎👍 😎👍❤😞

@rickyl9540 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardlynch5632 Hi there. I also have one and find the humbucker very dark. I had to get a luthier to lower the strings on the nut as it would go sharp when you pressed notes at the nut end. Also one screw on the bolt on neck was stripped. I suspect that the humbucker needs a 500k pot but the pots are 250k which is only correct for single coils and that's why the humbucker is too dark. The pickups combined sound fantastic as does the bridge pickup. More like a P90 than a regular tele...which is great!

Complete control! Great video again Colin! I have the pervious iteration, the Vintage Modified Telecaster Deluxe with the Fender branded pickups, also in Olympic White. Fantastic guitar! I bought this in all black last year. I put thicker strings on and tuned it to D. The guy had to file the nut a bit so it won't go horribly out of tune when playing notes on the first few frets. Besides that, I haven't changed anything. I like the guitar, it sounds good, it's really resonant!

Wobbly telecaster jacks are technically vintage accurate, you'd think 72 years would be enough time to design a decent jack mounting plate. I'd put a steel les paul style plate on it and be done.

Nice review of incredibly great series of guitars that are the "Classic Vibe" line up. I had one Fender Squier Telecaster Avril Lavigne Signature, Odd one as it has only one Humbucker pickup that I sold last week. The 3 way switch is used to split the bucker into dual single coil. Not as versatile as the true dual single coil, it did have a nice voice. Thanks for another great "Break Down and Play" demo, you really keep the BS out of your videos and I love it. Take care.

My first decent guitar was a black CMI Tele Deluxe copy. It had standard humbuckers rather than wide range style, but it looked the part, and played nicely. It's one of those guitars I wish I'd kept, but I sold it to raise money for my first real Fender Tele, a 1970's one. I had that for a coupe of years, then managed to get a 1966 one, which I still have, and which has been my main guitar for over forty years. But when I got the '66, I noticed something about the 70's one - it was the wrong shape. It turned out that in the early 70's, CBS replaced the original Fender body routers, and the new ones couldn't replicate the little curve on the upper bout that leads into the neck pocket, so they just did it a bit shallower, and once you spot it, you can't unsee it. It's disguised a bit by the curve of the scratchplate, but most Tele Deluxes from that era are that 'wrong' shape, which makes this one the wrong shape, but also the right shape!
@theguitaristas

Cheers man, I knew about that... I have two 70's Tele's and they are both wrong shape! you can see the difference where the body shoulder meets the fretboard. 😆👍

Your story towards the end of the video is a bit like mine - I had avoided "affordable" guitars having been forced to suffer them as a youngster. Now I'm as thrilled to discover the joys of a Harley Benton Jazzmaster knock off as I am unboxing a £1500 PRS. Having had the scratch plate off, can you judge whether there's enough space in the routing for full-size pots. Keep up the excellent output.

Nice vid again. Bit naughty getting one with scratchy pots but rather than replacing a good squirt of Deoxit usually does the trick (any automotive contact spray might work but the most exp is worth the investment over the years I think in this case). I disagree that the electronics let the Squier CV range down. Personally, I would upgrade the metal hardware if anything and maybe especially so on the strat trem if you want floating. Even that though is way off essential or even particularly necessary, IMO. I now have a Squier CV 50s Tele which I am a fan of and just bought a CV 60s Strat that's fine for home use and local gigs even (again IMO). The strat came with a full set up incl of PLEK (hardly any extra here from my chosen shop). Versus the other one, it's nice to have everything just so but the PLEK is not essential, I thought, but enough of a difference that I would take it again if that offer stands. I too have a couple of expensive guitars but really, for what I care about, as go-to guitars (no great guitarist but like classic stuff) the CVs are all I need to satisfy my first world issues. Sure I like nitro but the CV Strat finish is beautiful in its own right and the thing is not heavy and better balanced than my now old MIM standard Strat.............Knocking it out of the park with no actual need to change a thing for anything remotely local (again IMHO)..............

Looking forward to seeing that on the upcoming video. I can relate too well to the gear addiction too. I took a break from playing for several years and just got back into it 1 year back…I’ve lost count of how many guitars I’ve bought and sold since then, but I built up a nice collection fairly quickly and now realizing I need to be more budget conscious moving forward. 😅 Hopefully I can try one of these Classic Vibes in the shop. I made my own Tele Deluxe nearly 10 years ago - Long story but I was offered 2 raw wood, routed only, Tele bodies, a Cabronita and a Deluxe. I'd never owned a Tele at that point, and I didn't particularly like them to be honest 😆 Anyway they both turned out great and I grew to love them both. About a year ago I was thinking about getting a Tele with single coils but I had the idea to see if I could get a scratchplate made that was routed to take a Tele single coil in the bridge and a humbucker in the neck. Now I find myself wanting a guitar with P90s, when I could save a ton of money if I could buy another scratchplate but routed to take 2 P90s instead. If this works out then I reckon that a Tele Deluxe would have to be seen as probably the most versatile guitar ever made, and if I can easily swap between scratchplates for the choice of wide range or regular humbuckers, single coils, and P90s, then that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned....and then it creates another argument in my mind that I only need to have one solid body electric guitar (my Deluxe with 3 or 4 loaded scratchplates of course), then I could possibly sell my other guitars and try and get near to the amount of my dream Penguin, just to indulge my love of guitars 😆👍

I did have to drill a couple of holes in the pickup cavity to stop the Tele bridge screws from fouling, but you can't see them and it's a small price to pay. Basswood body and blackwood fingerboard and maple neck?ithink,2 Alnico 5 pick ups (Eastwood's take on a P-90) and they are fantastic. I own 2 in mint condition(there's one for sale in the UK on eBay) Only the headstock is different.

@@theguitaristas You know what mate? It turns out that I can get a Deluxe scratchplate that's routed for P90s 🥳😁 I'm currently on the lookout for a decent set but there's not much about that isn't Wilkinson at the moment. That's going to save me whatever a Revstar Standard P90 costs. That's made my day, and I hereby declare the Tele Deluxe with multiple scratchplates to be the most versatile guitar available for a decent price.....you now only need 1 guitar but you can have almost any pickup config you can want. LOVE that guitar. Very nostalgic for me, they were in the stores when I was a teenager. Never like them until I saw it in a magazine ad in Olympic White; whole different story. VERY COOL! I thought of this as Fender's Les Paul. FYI, the first F-Tuners were made down the street from Fender in a deal Leo made with a machinist friend. They made each individual part and assembled them. When they couldn't keep up with demand, they turned to Schaller, who made the ones people thought were crap; Schaller making crappy tuners? Go figure. I had a black '71 Thinline, excellent humbuckers, and the F-tuners were tight, stable and great feeling. FYI: On all my teles I use a Les Paul jack plate. The traditional Tele one just seems stupid and is always a pain in the ass. GREAT VIDEO!

I went down a rabbit hole with the wide range humbuckers on the road to picking up a secondhand mexican roadworn one of these. The original wide range was designed with magnetic adjustable CuNiFe pole pieces and oversized bobbins as they were weaker magents than bar magnets. The CuNiFe material was produced up until about 1981 for use in car speedometers. When the material was no longer available they stopped making the wide range buckers

Just stopping by today, I have a Squier Bullet Limited Edition telecaster is red sparkle flake finish that I picked up for about $119.00 USD a few years back. No high frets and the setup is 100% perfect... very awesome guitar. I write and record commercially licensed music under performance rights organization, BMI. And the telecaster fits at least seven genres of music that I write and record in. Such a brilliant guitar. I really like the sound and demo music you are playing, reminds me of Elliot Easton from my favorite band "The Cars"... As an older 1970s/1980s guy myself I understand what you are saying in the video. That sound of the tele' for classic rock and even pop brings me WAY back, and think you'll agree on that. The last thing that I like to say (and yes, as an old guy, I can ramble a lot), these guitars look, sound and play very well and the lower prices keeps more money in my pocket.. And that to me, is a win/win. Thank You for reading my comment, have a great weekend, stay safe out there. - Mr.Tom

Well I can tell you totally enjoyed this CV tele. And I think that enthusiasm shone thru to make it one of your very best vids. 😎👍 Not to mention playing one of your fav tracks I'm thinking and so...we could likely have a clash interlude weekly. 😅 That would likely get us thru for some time!!! Can you recall where in Aus you bought the strat? I lived in London for 18 months and had a blast. Haven't been back in years, but did go back a few other times. One day again hopefully. 😊 My deluxe MIJ Troublemaker looks somewhere similar in terms of colour and headstock, but then the differences kick in. Mine doesn't come with that large pick guard for starters & the rest is more Gibson than Fender. 🤔 But, this looks very aesthecally pleasing! Eh, as per your thoughts, expensive (well not cheap) vs this CV likely not a great deal there in terms of sound, just a bit different. I think you may have sold this to many a viewer here. And one thing you didn't mention to your viewers who aren't familiar with the volume and tone set up is the great flexibility. Cheers Col. 🎸🎸🎸

Thanks man, I think at the very least a 'punk interlude' every week is a great idea and The Clash will feature often!! 😆 I bought it in Sydney while staying at the Hilton in George St, there was a music shop literally across the mall outside the door. A Highway One Strat and A Zoom Multi FX pedal and headphones and I was away! It was in 2007 and the was the start of something... I hadn't played for 20 years and was amazed I could remember anything but it all come back and after a few more years mucking around I really got the bug again and it's all led to this. I have very fond memories of Australia!

Hey Guitarista, I'm 54 and I began playing guitar very late at 18. I loved Led Zeppelin, but I always played Stratocasters and Telecasters. Later I started buying Paul Reed Smith. For a Jimmy Page fan I was a Strat guy. In 2014 I bought my first Epiphone Les Paul a 1960 Tribute Plus but it just wouldn't stay in tune, after I bought 3 more Epiphone Les Pauls and the same happened they wouldn't keep tune. So I said to myself "I will never buy a Gibson." In the last month I bought two Gibsons and I am a converted man.

Love this one, got the same for $300 open box and dropped some P90s in a new pickguard, rewired the stock controls for 50s and ran with it. Gotoh saddles fit fine if you dont favor the OG bent steel Strat saddles Worth saying its a bona fide Strat neck with the curved neck heel, not the flat Tele heel. Doesn't at all need a neck swap but will take all kinds of interesting Fender necks of various profiles and various degrees of roasting... 😊

To fix the loose jack cup, you can move the clip that holds the jack deeper into the body. Either that, or, what is probably a better solution install and Electrosocket or a clone. Moving the clip is kind of a pain and there's a special tool you can get to do it, but it's doable. Cool guitar. Fun review. Thanks again for the entertainment and information.

Hey Colin! These Classic Vibe guitars are incredibly good value in spite of what cork sniffers say! And I am so glad you attended the "C.S.A." (Cork Sniffers Anonymous) and got your five year pin!! ") Truth is, my "lady partner" AKA (The Boss) kept me just poor enough to where I couldn't afford to be a cork sniffer!! LOL! I am in good spirits brother, as I've decided to write and record an entire album with my dear friend Dave who was lead guitar with me for many years! He's spent a small fortune of recording software and custom built computers, along with guitars, peddle boards etc etc, and has become a very highly respected engineer within the music community in the Toronto area. He's dropped everything, and isn't taking on any projects so we can concentrate on this project! I agreed to collaborate on his Metal album with writing and vocals with some rhythm guitar, which will be minimal as Dave is an absolute monster guitar player who can play ANYTHING! While we were working the club scene and recording old school, where there was no such thing as PC, he supplemented his income playing guitar for one of the most well known Canadian Elvis impersonators, who's son Rob played bass for us. When this album is done, we start on my album of good old fashioned rock n roll!! I've saved a bunch of complete and partially complete songs for a time like this, and with my failing health, I never believed I would get a chance, so I am really lit up (figuratively speaking) about this! Dave is funny about not wanting to expose anything he records until the project is done, so I'll have to sneak you some cuts via e-mail when we get a few complete. Another great video brother!!
