Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on KZfaq!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...
WARNING
Abandoned mines and ruined structures have many hazards and can severely injure or even kill you. Do not attempt to copy or re-enact situations or scenarios seen in this video. Stay Out and Stay Alive: • Gly Says... STAY OUT S...

It was a cool video though and thank you for sharing it. Laura, make Gly take you to dinner or something. No point getting all dressed up and then just standing in the doorway. Gly & Laura: I recently retired and currently subscribe to 277 KZfaq channels. I always save yours until last each week, because frankly you guys go the extra mile, and are seemingly over the top devoted to producing the absolute best quality content more so than most every other KZfaq channel. You concentrate on quality cameras and equipment and go above and beyond to provide the viewer with the best footage possible, even putting yourselves through a lot of extra work and effort in the process, all the while using common sense. You make the audience feel like they’re there with you crawling through tight & dirty crawl spaces, even though I’m comfortably on the couch😂 Keep up the great work!

What you need is a few low power repeaters to relay your handheld signal to/from the surface that you could drop off at points where your handheld doesn't reach any more. Unfortunately I'm not aware of any such thing commercially. I have some designs in the works for Amateur Radio, but they require 2 frequency ranges to work and all of the public walkie talkie services are single frequency range.
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces 23 күн бұрын
“Gly”: I’ve looked into that but there’s nothing commercially available. The other thing is, that would be just one more thing you have to drag all the way down and all the way back out again. Dangling them down the shaft is another idea as long as it’s possible to do so without them getting snagged on something.

Gly, while you were struggling to get down that shaft, it gave me time to do a close study of the timbers and lumber used in that shaft. Most of the lumber appears to be sawn with either a bandsaw or sashgang. The timbers showed signs of both a bandsaw and circular saw. The circle saw marks might be from an edger but some shows signs where the saw returned indicating a circle headrig. Most of the material appears to be pine with the cage guides probably of Doug-fir. My guess is that it was sourced from the Tahoe area. Any other nerd out there have comments or corrections?

Gly, try to trust the rope more, just dingle in the rope and use your feet to control the orientation of your body, so you dont start spinning. One hand on the descender and the other on the camera. Then you will use less energy trying to grab everything on the way down. I have climbed the Silver mines in Kongsberg Norway, only a few places in those mines had ladders, but i use the similar technique going down those as the rock walls. The most exiting mine i went down there was shaped as a champagne bottle, it was 450 feet deep, free hanging form a H beam on top, on the half way down, i had to kick away a giant ice formation that was hanging from the wall, it was not safe to go under that, so i had to kick it down, the sound when the ice was hitting the bottom of the mine some 200 feet below me in the dark, was a little scary. I went up the same way to get out again, it was a long and slow rope climb, i also had to pass a knot on the rope both ways, because we did not had a rope that was long enough to reach the bottom, so we tied in a carabiner on the ropes to splice them.

The higher the frequency your radio, the easier time it has keeping signal through narrow tunnels. Trouble is, part 15 radios on Ghz frequencies are as rare as hen's teeth. You might have luck commissioning someone to take a couple of 5ghz transceiver modules and making something for you, either voice or tone (morse or other beep code).

Upgrading to a digital radio such as a DMR system would allow you to use single frequency repeat mode which would significantly increase your underground penetration. You could even leave a radio at the station and continue deeper and the radios will automatically re-transmit on time slot 2, staying in contact with the surface the entire time. Its a really cool feature, but you'll have to get your amateur license if you wanna be legit.

I would have a tether attached to the camera, that would be an expensive drop...

I wear glasses so when I go over water I have the cable around my neck to save them. My uncle just sees mine and cousin says he just lost his new sunglasses in the water!

Hey Gly, it looks like fun! I was wondering why you are not rapping down the open and free shaft next to the man way?

“Gly”: The man way acts as a barrier for any objects that might let loose. If you’re in the shaft you’re in the bullseye and the deeper you go the harder things hit.

The people that dug and blasted and framed that structure must have lost their arse financially. Nothing there for the materials to build it with the labor cost

A quick comment on your Comms situation - as a Ham & a person that has his GMRS License - from the video it looks like you are using FRS radios - which are very low powered - less than 1 watt. If you don't have GMRS radios, the License is $35 from the FCC and is good for up to 10 "family" members - Tidradio makes some decent 8 watt ht radios - and they have removeable antenna's - for normal use - extending an antenna down a mine shaft like this one would be a tad unorthodox - and the really "Serious Ham's" might cringe with the line loss etc. but say dropping an antenna 50 feet down the shaft, hooked to a decent 50-ish watt base station located top side might help ensure that you remain in radio contact. Doing what you do - radio communications will always remain a constant challenge - solid rock is just not very conducive to radio transmissions. Might want to consider a mask - Hantavirus is a definite threat with that level of rat droppings.

Do you ever tether that camera ? If a rung on the ladder fails you will need both hands ,,,,,and should be climbing with both hands without a ladder failure

Gly to Laura "you and these shafts!" Laura 😈 I know you guys don't really do sponsorships but have you ever considered reaching out to like the harness/climbing companies or camara companies that you use and trust, and proposing a 1 time sponsorship from them? It could be for money or products. Also, I was thinking about the camera you have to juggle while climbing down. It has a closed type handle like grip right? What if you put a large carabiner through that with another rope? Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about it falling and even if it got a bit tangled up, you could undo the carabiner, untangle and then reattach. And when Laura came in after you, you could make sure the camera was secure, then when you went further down she could man the rope again.. Or something along those lines. I know my anxiety goes up just watching you put it down.. so I bet you would find it less stressful, too, to not have to worry about if it fell or not because even if it did, it wouldn't go far.
