Big Nutz is one of few squirrels that allows me hand feed him. He begs for it most of the time 😊. Another male and a female named Spot have taken nuts from my hand, but are still timid.
Nuts almost always on deck: Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Peanuts.
Rare When I can ($): Hazelnut, Shelled Walnuts, Filberts, Brazil Nuts
Seeds, etc: Sunflower, Black Oil Sunflower, Pumpkin, Critter Feed Mix
PEANUTS - I am aware those are not the best treat for squirrels. Those are set out primarily for the many chipmunks. When finances allow, I will phase out purchasing bulk peanuts and stay with a healthier blend.
Whenever I DO run out of peanuts, it does annoy them (squirrels) and it shows. On average, they tend to sit and eat the good nuts and when finished they take the peanuts to bury. (most of the time)
I love all the chipmunks around here. There are at least 6 that I am aware of who frequently visit the deck. The peanuts may not be good for them as well, but they LOVE them. AND if I stop giving, the neighbors keep giving.... and will I miss having them around my yard :( and then I cannot share them with you
