The number one thing I did to simply my life was when I decided to stop coloring my hair. I started going gray in 10th grade! I was so tired of coloring my hair so 3 years ago I cut it all short and let it grow out. My hair is so healthy and fully grown out now. i love it!

My hair started going grey in 5th, in the FRONT. All of my confidence just rolled down in a sec. Not good timing, man. I was 10. So I was almost convinced by some voice in my head that I had to dye it and refresh it every month. Until I was 15. As it grew longer I realised that it has its beauty... thanks to my friends I kinda accepted it, but sometimes it still looks horrible... 😂🙈

TIP: I have a Donations-hand-me-down basket in each of our closets, so whenever something doesn't fit or we don't want it any more it goes straight to the basket. At the end of each month I review the baskets and separate what needs to be donated and what need to be kept for my youngest son to use next. Just to have the basket there makes the constant decluttering so much easier and it helps a ton with the closet space.

One little thing is having a single box of christmas decorations. They're all second hand, didn't cost me anything and fit nicely in the cupboard under the stairs. Seeing family struggle with multiple boxes and taking weeks to get everything set up really made me appreciate this simplicity.

I really love decorating for Christmas. I could never get all my decorations in one box, but I have downsized quite a bit as I moved into smaller and smaller places. Still, that's space I don't mind taking up, because it's filled with something that makes me happy.

Most people are shocked when I tell them I don't do Christmas decorating anymore, especially since that was my "thing". But with an empty nest, and a small condo, I just don't need it. My daughters took most of the decor that I had which had sentimental value for them, so I still get to see my decorations, and I have 1 garland which holds ornaments with each of the grandkid's names, but otherwise it didn't make sense to decorate, store and move from house to house all the stuff when it was just for my eyes and I spend majority of holidays with my kids and their families. If I ever wanted to go all out, I can buy a tree from basically anywhere, and borrow back my decorations from my daughters, but for now it's just towels in the spare closet and empty cans in the parkade locker.

My parents lived in a very small apartment when I was younger, and my mom (thrift genius), would often store half of my toys in a box, and when I started getting tired of playing with current ones, she would give me the toys in stored box- it felt like I had just gotten new presents, and she would store the other toys and rotate my toys this way. I'm really surprised of how people in the west wash their clothes after using it (like the same day washing). Isn't very wasteful? Water, detergents and electric (since you use washing and dryer). @@unemilifleur yeah kids would definitely notice if a kid wore one pair of pants all the time. The person who wrote the comment said 10 outfits, so perhaps that means 8-10 pairs of pants and 10 shirts to go with the pants. I’m always skeptical when adult you tubers say “I have a 10 piece capsule wardrobe and no one notices I’m wearing the same things over and over again!” I’m like, uhhhhh, yes, yes they do. They just don’t say anything, bc as adults, we know it’s inappropriate to say that.

Do u have to go to a laundromat? I can't imagine waiting all week to wash clothes. Gives stains a chance to set, too. The bedding alone is 4 loads, at least, with 3 kids. They never can wear the same thing all day... food on shirts, even when older. Always spills. I do at least 3-4 loads a day, and the kids'll fold them to prevent wrinkles. They're pretty picky about how they look for school.

TIP: We are doing The Minimalists 30 Day Challenge currently. Simply, for 30 days, get rid of a number of items that matches the day of the challenge, so 1 item on day 1, 11 on day 11, 23 on day 23, etc. My wife and I are doing it together. We are on day 20, and it's amazing that each day we seem to be able to find that many things to each get rid of. I mean, we're not hoarders, but as ordinary middle class people we have WAY more than we need. Most unexpected thing is how mentally freeing it is to reduce the amount of things around. Great video, thanks for making it.

I used to have a rainbow wardrobe. Litterally. But I often felt like looking like a clown 🤡 and was drawn to dark/black outfit. I was afraid of "losing a part of my personality", but after a month of trial, I got rid of my colorful clothes. Now I dress all black, it's been a year and a half, and I love my black clothes ! 🖤

I used to literally wear rainbow all the time. Now I wear black everyday I will say that I still appreciate and love rainbows and bright colors but me personally I feel comfortable and happy and what I have on even though it is black which isn't necessarily my personality. But it serves me well and I don't have to think about things.

I have ADHD too! Have you noticed improvements in your symptoms after decluttering? I still have a long way to go, but it seems like every time I declutter a drawer or a closet, my mental clarity improves... the trick is remembering not to be lured in by new shiny stuff 😅

Watching this video, I've realized we are minimalists without even knowing it. We started decluttering our home 3 years ago and now I can say I am 90% happy with it. We still have some stuff to sell and donate, but very little stuff. We do not buy unnecesary things, we meal plan and never have food waste, we have payed off all debt and started investing and made a good safety fund too. We also buy our vacations in january when there are early bookings. Our dream is to retire at 50, and at 30, we are well on that way.

The done-not perfect, has really helped me. I've often remembered you say this when I'm cleaning the kitchen--which in reality, will just need to be cleaned 2days later. Get it done--it doesn't have to be perfect. I am happy to say, I'm 99% done minimalizing my house that took 6 years. I am having trouble with the 1 last room....stuff I don't want to get gross in the garage, but doesn't belong in my house (rain collectors, a few tables)......last time I let this room go....the clutter crawled all back into my house. I'll report back---this room MUST be done!

I saved a lot of money by saving smaller clothes. I actually DID go on a diet and lose weight, and I didn't have to buy one piece of clothing during that time. When I reached my goal weight, I had enough clothes that fit to see me through shopping for newer clothes to celebrate my victory. I had to go through several sizes of clothes to get there, and having to buy new clothes for each size would have been way outside my budget, even thrifting. Sometimes it does pay to hold onto things. I only held onto timeless, classic fashions, and clothes I wouldn't be ashamed to wear out in public. I generally dress in very classic styles anyway, so it wasn't a problem.

My Tip: I have a One In/One Out rule - if I"m going to buy something to bring into my house, something else needs to go. This keeps from clutter and the "I'll put this in the attic for now" and having to deal with it later. Also, I can ask myself when shopping "Am I willing to let go of something to have this?"

Once you've decluttered, it helps to have the "one out" item be in the same category as the new item. If I see a new top I like, I ask myself which top I have that I'm going to get rid of.

I have been binge-watching your videos. I love them, thank you! I thought I was a minimalist because compared to other people I don't have a lot of stuff. In fact, I sold most of my things packed my kid and cats in my car, and drove us all 1900km north to live in sunny Queensland to be closer to family, towing a 7x4 trailer filled with our "pared-down" stuff. Turns out we need even less than I thought. I've learned that my biggest issues are paper clutter (I just don't want to deal with it), cords (maybe one day I will need them), and fantasy-self items. I am working through all of that right now and it is crazy how much unrelated emotional stuff is coming up for me at the same time, which is making me realise I need a huge life shift. All this from decluttering!

My number one tip: just do minimalism the way it fits you. Our progress is veeeeery slow. Sometimes this stresses me out. But it shouldn‘t. Decluttering my books! lThey are so heavy! I loved my books but it’s just impractical to keep them around unless going to reference them in future. I still have more to go but really can feel the difference bc so much lighter feeling. I can’t wait for the next box to be donated. Then I’ll do the final pass through and only have a few books left. This feels great. I never want to own many books ever again. Audiobooks are my new favorite form of reading- injury to my vestibular system so hard on my eyes to read anyways. It’s win win bc also doesn’t temp me to read and hurt myself and easier to move- and being light enough to pick up and move easily is a goal of mine.

Especially "Done is better than perfect" With the books, though, I keep looking at your lovely home, thinking how that's what I want, but with bookcases! lol - my minimalism would be simple, clean, sleek, and filled with lots of books :) I would like to advise using a password locker like LastPass instead of writing them down. I always take care almost all my belongings the right way and it last literally years. We don't need exaggerated time for caring. But simply put everything in their place, make sure clean everything right away after using it. As for clothing, i usually use simple clothes, choose fabric that does not wrinkles easily or in contrary it has natural wrinkles, so i don't need ironing.. Mostly i handwash or use laundry bag for washing in machine if i don't have a lot of time, then hanging the clothes as tidy as i can so i don't need to iron it.. With this, most all my clothes last for more than 10-20 years on good condition. I have some items for 20-30years and still using it 😅. Oh, buy something always by quality, worth it.

Multi-purpose when possible to cut the clutter. My dining table seat-bench is used as a coffee table in the living room unless we have company for dinner, and need the extra seating at the table. I live in Montana where we have cold winters and chilly mornings most of the year. I keep all my throw blankets out of sight, when not in use, in a simple lidded trunk I found at a garage sale, and it doubles as a very handy nice looking end table. I'm not much of a decorative pillow fan, but I do have a couple. I just change out the covers depending on the season. Currently my two snowman Christmas pillows have inexpensive gold colored covers that look great in my living room.

I started decluttering over 2 months ago. It felt like a mountainous task.. So far I've sold almost all of my craft things, I have storage left from the room but most of it has gone. I sometimes miss it, sometimes glad it's gone.. I've sold a few bigger items that were cluttering up the kitchen. SO glad they're gone! Some clothing. Don't miss it, glad its gone. I still feel I have to much clothing still but it's become a massive struggle to decide. Books, sadly no one wants them and they always get donated (I worked in a charity shop and no one bought them then either). I still have a few boxes of for sale items, maybe I need to gather them and keep them in one spot.. who knows. They kind of irritate me, yet I feel getting a little money back may ease the guilt?! What I do know is that I feel like I'm in some sort of no man's land.. I just don't feel much of anything towards any of my clothes or belongings atm. I feel flat. In the start things were flying, now it's dragging on and Im lucky if I sell a few things a week and spend so much time trying to make decisions. I just feel flat. I don't know how else to put it. I don't know if I need to push through, just get it out the door, just be ruthless and get rid of more, or if I need a break - I fear I will get rid of everything in this mood. Things I enjoyed I just don't feel anything for. I don't know what that means or what it is 🤔

@@Hauntaku Thanks for reading, and your suggestion :) I guess a car-boot sale would be the equivalent here, that's out of season now sadly. I have things listed in multiple places, and I'm still managing to sell things - I need to remind myself of that. Perhaps I got used to the multiple daily sales and now it's gone quiet and dragging in comparison.. I don't know. I did say "I'll give it a month, then if not sold I'll donate" but I said that last month aswell lol I guess I don't know if I've hit a bump in the road or what. Part of me wants to see it through, part of me is over it - I keep revisiting spaces to see if I can get rid of more but then struggle to decide and it's those sorts of struggles/back and fourth that's driving me nuts (The decisions were far easier at the start). Hoping it's part of the process and that I'm not really this irritating lol x

I get it, for real…can you bundle things together and sell/give them away as a bundle? Like “summer dress lot size x”? That might be more appealing to people. It sounds like it’s really weighing on your peace of mind, so if it’s the money that’s holding you back and the things aren’t selling you can still go ahead and give away or donate them! Don’t let the money hold you back from moving forward, maybe you need to set a sell by date or gone by date. Cheers!
