ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

When I lived in South Korea for a year as a 19-year-old college student, I noticed that elderly Koreans, unlike many elderly Westerners, have no problem getting up off the floor. This is, of course, because they sit and sleep on the floor and get up off the floor multiple times a day. I have thought about this frequently since then, especially as I watched my own father start falling and not being able to get up in the years before he passed away. I am now in my forties, and my husband is in his fifties. Last year we talked about this and decided to get rid of most of our furniture and sit and sleep on the floor most of the time (we built ourselves a floor table, and for a bed we have a futon mattress that we pull up against the wall as a "sofa" during the day). It's been excellent for our strength and flexibility, and it's also gotten us accustomed to a bit less comfort, which makes us more adaptable when we travel and spend time outdoors.

Why be uncomfortable.
@JellybeanHouseNewfoundland
@JellybeanHouseNewfoundland Жыл бұрын
@@user-xg4ue5cc2v Getting out of our comfort zones is how we grow. Better health in the long term is much more important than a bit more comfort in the short-term. Plus you get used to sitting and sleeping on the floor and actually come to prefer it, so it's less comfortable but not actually uncomfortable. When I went on a trip lately and had to sit on chairs and sleep on really soft beds, I actually disliked it. Of course it's nice to feel really, really cozy and comfortable sometimes, but those times are more enjoyable when you're not comfortable ALL the time. For example, it's extremely nice to sit in front of a warm fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa and a book after a long day skiing, but if you just sat in front of the fire with a cup of cocoa and a book all day long, every day, and didn't get out there pushing yourself in the cold and the wind first, the fireside wouldn't feel so exquisitely wonderful! You'd just feel hot and lethargic. And as I said in my original comment, I don't want to end up unable to get up off the floor when I'm old; isn't that worth a little extra effort?
@brattingprincess
@brattingprincess 9 ай бұрын
One thing that you never mentioned is that the floors are often **always** heated. Because of the fact that in the United States our house does not have heated floors, the way we operate is different. Due to aversion of cold for cultural reasons, sleeping on floor and sitting on it even esp cold hard bathroom tile was discouraged. Even with the heated floors in Korea, you would offer people a cushion to sit on.

A lot of these habits are very common in Europe too. Shopping for fresh groceries daily, taking off shoes after you enter the house, opening the windows for “lüften”. What habit I took from my Chinese husband is: changing clothes right after I come back home. And my personal new habit is: cleaning the bathroom after every use (morning and evening). 😊

Same here. I actually change my clothes not so much because of culture but because I have cats. Firstly I don't want to have cat hair everywhere and I feel like it's better when working with people who might be allergic. And when I come home I change into something more comfy which also has the benefit that I don't sit on furniture in the same clothes I had on in public transport.

The habit I developed that has helped me the most is after breakfast I plan the evenings dinner and prep as much of it as I can and then I 100% clean my kitchen, unload the dishwasher, wipe counters and stove etc. I run out of energy late in the day and used to have anxiety about 4 or 5 o'clock thinking what are we having for dinner.

Loved this video, Marissa! ❤ I actually lived in Japan for a while and there are so many parts of the Japanese culture that have changed my life, health and perspective for good. For example: 1) Drinking healthy tea instead of soft drinks or water. 2) Washing rice before cooking! 3) "Shouganai" which means "it can't be helped!", a phrase they use instead of complaining or thinking negatively, for example when there's a long waiting-line or something negative that you cannot control happens. 4) Showing respect to people older than you, as well as your parents, employers or teachers, oh and even peers who are just more experienced than you in something. 5) Not eating till you're stuffed but till you're around 80% full (I can't say I always follow this, but it is a very good rule xD) 6) Humility, taking responsibility and apologizing when you've wronged someone. Not bragging or complimenting yourself outwardly. 7) The intentionality - for example how every movement has a purpose in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies (Sadou) I could go on forever 😂😂

I didn't live there yet, but I'm fairly often in Japan (3-4 times per year) and I just love the way how things of everyday life can be ritualized. It gives you more awareness of your own habits and mindset and that even the little things can bring joy. Everytime I return home, I try to experience my everyday life and surroundings with more awareness. My ability to enjoy the small things at home like taking care of my garden or enjoying a good tea, definitely increased.

One habit I always had, then lost for a while, and embracing back since almost 2yrs now, is to take every day some time to enjoy nature. Even, if you live in a very busy city, the flower that is cracking from the tiles, or a nice balcony, or a tree, or any animal, for as small as an ant, is amazing to look at. Gives an instant peace of mind, gentleness and happiness boost moment. And if I only can, I watch everytime the sunset and thanks for the daylight and warm it gave. Little things goes far and have a huge impact we don't often consider on a daily rush. Cheers from Poland!

Putting my kitchen to bed at night is a habit that I’ve learned benefits morning me more than anything else. I clean the kitchen well. Loading the dishwasher, making sure everything washable is off of the stove and counters, pots and pans dried and put away, degreased cook top etc. I’m always so happy to have a clean space when I wake up in the morning to make breakfast. It’s a habit that if I compromise on, I’m ALWAYS regretful the next day.

Something I noticed is how sweet her family is to each other, like ridiculously gentle in speaking to one another, not just nice- but like overly crazy sweet. I think if I saw a white American family like that it’d be so weird to me but it’s definitely rubbed off on me and I was recently told by a stranger that I’m the calmest person they’ve ever met which is a huge change to me.

I was born in Iran and lived there till I was 16. Respect for people who are older and have had more experience is valued in the Persian culture. It could be family, neighbors, teachers, or coworkers. It is specially important to spend time with your older grand parents and being in their presence. I remember my great-grandmother was the oldest person in our family. Other family members would visit with her and ask for her advice if they were faced with an issue in their life and they felt her insight would be helpful to them. Also, teachers are respected because they are educators. At the end of the schools year we would thank them for their efforts.

@shidehhafezi6826 As recently as the 1960's/70s, these things were also commonplace in the American South, in both black and white households. I am not sure exactly what brought about the changes to this. The 70s seemed to bring more mothers working outside of the home, more divorce, and more adults focusing on themselves as individuals, rather than as members of a family. This is not to say that there is not a time and place for these things, just seems like these would be even more reason to seek out others with life experience and time to share-like grandparents, aunts, and uncles. As someone who spent as much time as possible with extended family growing up, it seems odd that younger folk are eager to dismiss their elders as 'being out of touch' or 'not relevant', then consider it remarkable and fabulous when social media tells us ways to save money or grow a garden or any number of things that used to be just a way of life.

I love to pair the habit of airing the home first thing in the morning with the habit of making all the beds, folding the throw blankets in the living room, fluffing all the pillows and picking up every room to it’s tidy state (because most of the time I am too tired for it the night before). Even my two year old son is already helping this little ritual and it just feels amazing, starting our days to a tidy home.

We lived in Shanghai for 5 years and I noticed everyone stuck to a steady schedule for arrival, lunch, and departure. At lunch, everyone left at the same time (at 12:00 noon) and took exactly a 1 hour lunch break and returned to work at 1:00 pm. They would often eat together and socialize. In the US, so many of colleagues would eat lunch at their desks alone and continue working. I realized then that’s important and beneficial to take a lunch break, so my husband and I would often meet and take a walk together. We’ve been back in the US for a few years now, but I still make it a point to take a break from work during my lunch break. I also try to follow their approach and end the work day at a reasonable time.

In Europe lunch it is the bigger mail in the day, and longer. Its a menu with first, second dish and dessert. With less than an hour you dont have time to cook and eat, and if you have a family you have to eat with them etc. An hour is not much time, in same places is 1.30. And eating in your desk sounds dirty, xD.

Speaking as someone with over a decade in healthcare... #8 "Move Your Body" is really, really, REALLY important. Many bodily systems (especially the lymphatic system) are dependent upon motion to some degree just to function, much less function well. Even something as prosaic as sitting in a chair, like in an office or classroom, can become less than healthy if done for too long. Much of the human body is a "use it or lose it" proposition, so... Move! :-)

Other values I've adopted (live in Thailand long term): Giving so much grace- a mai pen rai attitude (it's okay, it doesn't matter); giving little gifts to friends often to show you thought of them (especially after you travel or just something small they like, like a fruit), respect for elders, -bending the head a little as you walk by to show deference, teaching children care and politeness toward adults, respecting others by using a low voice outside/on public transport and covering the mouth when speaking on the phone in public, being a generous host (definitely with you on the no shoes inside the home). Thanks for these great reminders of how we can adopt so much from the good in each other's cultures.

Oh those outside dance classes! I lived in China and I loved them. One class I did was literally 1.5 hours long, the lady was on a small stage, everyone around me was elderly and they had much more energy than me. 😀 I agree about the fresh air. When I lived in South Korea, my school would open all of the windows in the classroom in the dead of winter. I started getting into the habit of doing that. I still air out my room weekly. And don’t forget to drink hot water. 😉

I just found your channel. I am Indonesian and almost everything you say we practice in our daily life. I just want to add a habit that our family here and most other Indonesians do: smile more and be grateful more. I mean for everything. For good or bad. Even if bad things happen in your life, smiling and being grateful that they happened with a purpose, will make you a better person and always think positively in life. Even smiling at someone you meet on the street is also what we usually do here. You can brighten someone else's day without even realizing it. Well, even though we don't smile all the time at strangers, because it would feel weird but you get what I mean right? Thanks for sharing all this on your channel. I hope you and your family are always healthy and happy. Greetings from Indonesia.

As a German, a lot of these habits were familiar to me. Except we did use quite a lot of canned food still and I had to improve on that in my cooking as an adult. My Irish husband laughed at me for insisting that 'shoes live in shoeheim' when we first got together but he got on board easily enough. In turn, I've learned to appreciate sodabread and storytelling.

I write daily gratitudes at the end of each day. I actually text them to myself as a way of pausing and recognizing the blessings of each day. Great advice! Re: removing shoes, I’m Canadian and I believe all Canadians remove their shoes at the door. It may be only on the Prairies where we were farmers and ranchers and didn’t want to track mud into the house. It is weird to me when people don’t remove their shoes. Having slippers available isn’t common but a great idea. Also having a place to put all those discarded shoes is brilliant.

I was born and raised in the Philippines. I came in the US when I was 19. My grandma always said, “don’t place your purse on the floor”. She said that your purse is where you house your money or valuables and by putting it down on the floor - you’re lowering the energy of welcoming the abundance in your life. You suppose to always carry it up high or place it elevated. I’m surprised when I see some women place their purses on the public bathroom floor - it’s very unsanitary. I think it’s a double whammy for a chance to have life’s unfortunate events. 😅 Thanks for always sharing your wisdom! Xie Xie ni

All the points you mentioned my mother has been doing it since she’s a young girl. I used to laugh at her when she asked me to follow these. As I got older I began to do them more and more. My mom is 85. She opens the doors and windows wide first thing in morning to let out stale air. She has winter and summer house slippers. She changes into indoor clothes when she’s back from outing. She walks in the morning and collects edibles on her way around the neighborhood. She makes dough and skin and cooks from scratch. Grocery stores are with 3 minutes driving so we buy enough for a week. She’s strict in keeping house dust and clutter free. Chewing and eating slow is a given because this is how the flavor can be savored and appreciated (also showing respect to the one who made the food). I am retired and single. I don’t think I’d marry and try to change a non Asian senior guy to do all that we’ve been doing for centuries.

Polish here. Yeah, we also do most of these things here. Every time I see an American film where someone throws themselves on the bed or the sofa in their shoes, I cringe so hard (even worse is when a character prepares a meal for someone, the other person doesn't eat it for whatever reason, so the first person just throws the freshly cooked meal to the bin. I mean, PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE AND EAT LATER, the wastefulness makes me actually angry - and of course I know not every one in America does that, but I'm thinking it has to be at least somewhat of a thing among richer people, if it's portrayed so often and so casually on TV).

So, several times a week, my husband drops me off at my work in the morning so I am without my car. At the end of the day, I walk home, uphill all the way. This practice works fantastically to clear my stress as it lets me exercise and get my heart rate up, and keeps a definite line of separation between work and home so that when I do arrive at home, I am ready to engage in my family life without work hanging over my head.

I lived in Japan for a total of 5.5 years without a car. I was constantly walking and riding a bicycle. In the US I am always driving and even though I have a bicycle it seems like there are not always bike lanes or safe streets where I can ride my bike. I definitely miss that aspect of life, other than during the rainy season. I also miss my kotatsu (heated table) and the train system.

Oh, yes to the excellent train/subway system. I miss it, too. Sitting with Komatsu is fine for your legs, but so often my back would be FREEZING! What did you do then? I just tried to ignore it. One fun thing would be to go to sent. Then all of you steams as you walk home! 😊

Making my bed every day makes a difference im my energy flow I've noticed. Well, I moved from a 3 to an one room appartement so it looks quite messy when I don't do it. But it gives me a good kickstart inti the day.

I enjoyed this. I was born in the Caribbean and some of the things we practice are on your list. Like taking your shoes off at the front door, opening windows and door (that's actually one of the first thing that's done in the morning) and cooking with mostly fresh ingredients.

Thank you for sharing these habits. One habit that I practice which is inspired by Asian culture is the head bow. It feels natural to greet others and say thank you with a head bow vs. a handshake.

Loved this video! I do all of the life-affirming things you highlighted. In addition I walk in the early morning, have the largest meal at noon and do not eat after sunset. In bed by ten if possible, following Ayurvedic precepts which guide us toward health and longevity. No iced or cold drinks. Raised as an Army brat in Europe all of what you outlined is familiar. We lived in Stuttgart when I was a tot and the windows were ALWAYS open!

Born and raised in New Jersey here (Union County) and I love listening to Mandarin Chinese being spoken. I can listen to people speaking Mandarin for hours, and at one point in my life, I was learning the language however unfortunately gave up (I didn't have anyone in my life to practice with). I've been a subscriber for a couple years now and I'd love to see future videos with similar content. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the video, i learned a lot and there were some things similar in my culture and religion. I wouls like to share something we do in Islam every time you enter your home is to greet your home...its like your saying Hello to the home and everything in it. So we say Asalamu alaikum (means peace be upon you), and it's the same greeting we say to each other when we see each other. I love it .

I was very focused on the fresh foods once I had my first child. I need to do better with my teas though lol. However I still learnt a few new points and I really enjoyed this.

Hi Marissa! I am swedish and live in Sweden. Have you ever been here? All of those things you share as chinese or asian habits we have similar in scandinavia. For some reason we have alot in common with the chinese way of living. It´s the simplicity, the thought of an all around view on health, body and selfcare in daily life, the aestetics and as simple things as that we always take of our shoes when entering someones home.
