I know they are common in the pet trade but they are really one of the best frogs to keep as they are very active and fun to watch! I have just bred mine again and I’m saving some tadpoles to raise up and give away. You will probably have some tadpoles soon! Thanks for the video, another great one as always!

I have three young male african clawed frogs. They do have unique individual personalities; for example the smallest is named spring-heeled jack because he is incredibly fast and a high jumper, he will dart right in front of the larger ones and steal their food! The largest is called big bertha. We thought he was a girl because of his enormous size, but it turned out he is a male. Because there is no female, they will latch onto each other sometimes all at once when they get frisky and it looks pretty funny. My son saw them and said "Mom, the frogs are doing the conga!"

Nice frogs. I live in Alaska and have had ACFs for over 12 years. When the female is forcing her legs back and elongating her back legs that’s her indication that she is not ready to lay eggs. She does look ready to breed but sometimes it takes a change in water temp. If you add cooler water and turn the light off and feed them live nightcrawlers, they typically start laying eggs within a day or two.
@isaiahpatkutaqmckenzie7964
@isaiahpatkutaqmckenzie7964 5 жыл бұрын
If you want to raise the tadpoles your gonna wanna put the pair in a tank with no filtration and no substrate. That way they can lay their eggs and you can remove them once they laid their eggs. If you leave them in their home tank they will eat the eggs and the eggs will get stuck to the rocks and decor.

I ended up with one of these frogs by mistake, and was in with my young lionheads, well out she came quick and in a tank of her own. I had no idea what type of frog she even was. Very informative video, thank you. Now the mistake needs a buddy since she has her own tank. Lol I didn't even want this frog at first, now she is kinda growing on me, especially now that I am learning more about her.

Hopefully you have learned more since you posted this video but I will give my advice anyway. The tank is too small. The rule of thumb is ten gallons per frog. I would suggest a twenty gallon long tank. Second piece of advice is get rid of those pebbles. They can eat them when feeding and get impacted and die. My first tank I used large river rocks. Second tank was very fine sand. They can pass the sand through with no harm. Great looking frogs. Your girl is so big. I wish you the best.

If you still have these frogs, siphon water out and fill with cold at the same time plus add a few ice cubes just enough to chill the water. This should simulate spring and you may get some frog action 😉 (frog spawn). Works with a lot of amphibians.

great job i had some of these that were albino n i did have bare bottom due to the mess they leave in substrate but i kept mine in a 30 long with mopani drift woodand plants that sunk they loved the length swimming back n forth the tank was short but i still kept low level so they could do a leap n get air or stand on wood i shut the flow off on filter when feeding so the food stayed in one area and i could use electric tank vac to clean uneaten food and skin when they shed im so glad u kept your grow a frog many released them into rivers or ponds n screw up the local eco system ty for caring its nice to see.

I had one of these from the same mail order tadpole service. I got it when I was super young for going a whole week without getting home sick in kindergarten. My frog, bubbles, was with me until high school. He lived in miserable water conditions for a year or 2. Was in stagnant water in the garage and every couple weeks I would dump food into his aquarium. He lived through the winter. I don’t know how he survived. Once I matured and realized it was messed up, he lived a great life and died very happy. One time I was cleaning his aquarium outside and he escaped into the bushes. I thought he was gone forever but I dug a hole, lined it with plastic wrap, and filled it with water. To my surprise he found it. African clawed frogs are super cool and you can even feed them feeder fish. I think I may get another one.

Since I wanted to get into breeding angle fish I had to put them in a different tank they hav been mating before but never layed eggs so I looked up how long the eggs stayed eggs only to find out that eggs hatched in 5 to 4 days so it was kinda a rush but now some are tadpoles

I love these amphibian beauties! 😅😅 I raised so many as pets as a child & adulthood. However i have not ever seen them born as tadpoles they are tiny form when these frogs every time i've seen them in pet shops !! They're smart you can snap your fingers up & down etc and they follow. Would you believe fetch? However much like seals you give them fish they eat it on the spot! Surprise they know their names but similar to a dog that takes a bit of training. Live out if water not to long in the wild they can go on top of a stone or rock take a little sun when they are out of water & hop not like other frogs that leap high they hop low and fast. I have had naughty ones get out of there tank & find me elsewhere in my bedrooms! 🤣Yes they can be trained not to hop out but take no chances otherwise. They're comedic & good pets The clawed African Frog. 🐸

That frog is Huge!!! First off my frogs don't look anything like yours except for the black claws. I don't know why that is. About 2 years ago I bought 2 small African clawed frogs from Learning Express for my daughter's Birthday. At the time I didn't know they were illegal in N.C. For the first year I didn't pay them much attention. One day I decided this tank is not big enough for these now adult frogs. I then introduced them to a 5 gallon tank...they were happy frogs. After I switched them to a bigger tank that's when I seen them mate for the first time Wich is very interesting to say the least. Then we had eggs...then tadpoles and with a little luck I could raise them to full frog. Not an easy task. Of course by that time I'm doing my homework and learning more and more everytime. I've successfully raised 2 frogs a male and female. As we speak I've got 2 tadpoles and 1 froglet. I've become crazy trying to raise these guys. A lot of disappointment and very little triumph. I think now that you've introduced that male into the tank start watching bc there will be eggs. In the morning time always check bc your going to want to remove the eggs as soon as you can. I know enough now that I think I could successfully raised them To maturity. I failed, but through trial and error I think I got it. Anyways I've rambled long enough, my main question is why mine done look as far as yours or others I've seen in KZfaq. They look like they are carrying around a bunch of cellulite...lol!!!

I wound up with 2 of these girls a year ago as a gift. Your video gave me answers, such as the sensors on their body. Wondering how deep of a tank can I keep them in. They are in my community 42 bow front and I would like to put them in my 40 gal tall. I can add shelves for them... also many say no fish but just want to say they do great, although my dying fish are a meal. They are pigs and eat as much food as they can, but actually very peaceful, they even leave my eels alone!

Nice video, thank you for sharing. We have 2 African dwarf frogs ourselves (significantly smaller than your Clawed!) and they are very entertaining. I don't have a filter for them (conscious of the same stress factors you mention in the vid) but carry out weekly partial water changes - do you think this is okay in a 10 gallon tank? Also, what would you say about lighting - I don't have a tank light but keep them close to a window for some natural light cycle instead (not direct sunlight tho). Just want them to get the best care they can, really. Keep up the great vids (and afro!) :)

Sounds like you've got quite a bit going on in the one tank already, but I'm sure one or two more dwarf frogs wouldn't do much harm - that's your call! Live plants would be a great addition if you don't have any already. I know ZooMed and a few others make dwarf frog food - they definitely couldn't swallow the sticks I'm feeding these guys.

Doesn't matter too much either way with this species, but you should probably have more females than males if at all possible. The more frogs, the more space is required. 10 gallons is alright for one but pushing it for two.

I have an African Clawed Frog who is called Toady for the same reason- he is practically a family heirloom at this point, being approximately a year older than myself (and I'm gonna be 27 this year). I love your video, it's 100% spot on. I was wondering, how did you go about introducing Froggy and Froggy? When I was a child, we introduced a younger albino (likely male?) who I believe sadly succumbed to Toady as an overnight snack, as we could never locate it after one night. Seeing your video, I'm tempted to find Toady some companionship, but have lots of questions. He is in his ripe old years, I know life expectancy for African Clawed Frogs is around 30 years in captivity. Would he still be fertile at his age? As he has been a solo frog apart from the aforementioned incident, would it be upsetting to him to suddenly be introduced to a beautiful big froggy lady? And I'm 100% scared that if I did introduce him a new lady friend that his karma might catch up with him and he be eaten himself 😬😳 I wouldn't want to ruin what he's got going after being with my family for so long, so this is something I'm not looking to rush into, but the idea that he might be able to have some company and maybe even romance in his last years is something I'm considering. If Toady had children, it means a part of him will always be with us, as he has literally always been with me as long as I have been alive, and I can't imagine life without him. Anyways, sorry for the long message! I hope you are doing well and Froggy and Froggy are continuing to prosper 😁🐸

So are they as easy as a miltoniopsis or as easy as a spider plant?

I already own a male African clawed frog for around 6 months and I was considering getting a female too. I have another tank to raise her separately until she’s around the same size as the male. Do I need upgrade to tank larger than 10 gallons or should I keep the tank the same size of 10 gallons? Also what would you do to raise the tadpoles if they were to mate? Thanks

I'm not a big tortoise guy but I do know a few people with leopards - they're a great looking species! I think Kamp Kenan is your go-to KZfaqr for tortoise stuff, but with any tortoise species, be sure that you can house yours outside as an adult and provide all the proper lights while it's indoors. Other than that they're very hardy!
