An authentic transcription and performance of the keyboard parts played by Tony Banks on Squonk as performed by Genesis on the 1977 tour and the live album Seconds Out. Played with a Hammond B3 organ, RMI Electra-Piano 368, ARP Pro DGX, and Sequential Prophet-6.

@@mattthomasoverdrive4514 That should be the thing. Any way, your live recreations are getting better and better. It's also interesting to watch how actually difficult is to change all patterns live while playing.

When the percussion is activated on a Hammond it disables the 1’ (highest) drawbar. That 1’ drawbar (even though Tony uses it judiciously) seems to really offend my listeners hearing these parts in isolation.

@@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Have they issues with the highest frequences? I have no much idea, but I think it's possible that the medium frequence dominance on the organ gives a deeper sound, so when it's mixed that way, most people may feel there's a huge sound. Anyway, you're an expert on these subjects and your effort is truly appreciated. PS.: I own an old Roland E-36 (model 1993). This synth has a drawbar organ preset (A31), with 3 "variations", the first of which it's a sort of fast chorus. If I run it on Cubase and I add a built in Phaser without activating the chorus on the Roland, it does a pretty great Tony's organ emulation. Otherwise, I toggle on the chorus on the keyboard to play without any effect, with a "better than nothing" result, great to play live.

I so miss my first synthesizer, an ARP Pro Soloist. That “Fuzz Guitar” preset featured in this song is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replicate on another synth. RMI sounds cool, too, what a rare beast. Great job on this video, all the notes, rhythms and tones are spot on. I think your Genesis cover videos might be getting even more accurate!

Believe it or not I actually got a nearly spot on recreation on a Korg MS2000 of all things. Not at all easy lol, bu it's possible. You really need a multitimberal synth and careful use of the filter envelopes so the first buzzyness hands off to the sustain smoothly to really make the sustain work

This is terrific! I'm using one workstation so...time to program some key splits. A next day note: I ended up using my sequencer to set up a split to start with in one patch, then another one for the organ. With a touch of a button I can scroll up and down. I am using the Korg M-3 and managing this way to do it all on one instrument. Your video has been a huge help to get the sounds dialed in.

Spot on! Always loved the Hammond-ProSoloist combo. Pure magic. Yeah, the fuzz guitar is hard to replicate on other synths. Sounds as if it has the envelope doing pulse mod, but that tone is so sweet.

I missed the Hammonds that Tony used. (First a L-122, then from SEBTP to Duke, a T-102). He did use/create some cool sounds with the synths, but I really liked the sounds of a Hammond organ. (Mellotron too!)

@@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Beautiful B3. I have a C2 with a 21H with the 32H Series III 30 watt amp. I converted the Leslie to a two speed unit, and added percussion to the C2. I also have a T-212 with modified percussion. (Touch-response and 3rd harmonic added.) I know I can't keep them forever, but it's going to be hard to let them go someday.

Matt - I have a similar “L” shaped layout to yours with 3 boards on each leg of the L. I have a Motif ES 8 at the base of one of the legs of the L that I primarily use for piano. The rest are midi controllers. Can you say how you organized your layout to play Firth of Fifth? I think there are three different organ voices, Mellotron, ARP ProSoloist, and of course piano. Would greatly appreciate your insights.

@@jeffspadaro5773 my band has recreated two Genesis tours with Firth of Fifth, 1977 and 1981. I’ve mimicked that setup in each instance. So in 1977 the RMI is on the left side with the Mellotron, ARP on organ on the right. 1981 is a three point setup. Vocoder on left for Mellotron, Prophet 10 in center for organ, CP piano and Quadra on right. I’ve adjusted each arrangement accordingly - it’s a must for me to stick to the layout and gear per tour if I’m using dedicated instruments. We do the live versions without the piano intro.

Hmmm, after playing a lot and listening to bootlegs lately i actually think Tony may have preferred the "Wide/Shalow" setting on the Phase 100 for the Hammond. I could be wrong of course. Although the phaser does sound way less dominating in that third position i mentioned.
@mattthomasoverdrive4514

I’m A/B-ing these with the version I reference in the opening titles. In fact, the referenced version is my “click track”. I’ve never made a video when I haven’t thought it sounds exactly like the recording, except for the Afterglow video when I only had one layer of Prophet organ. Which model Hammond organ and Phase 100 are you using? Although I use a 70s script on the RMI and an 80s block on the B3 I’ve never compared them. I’ve never used a Dunlop Phase 100 either. That wide/deep setting is the only one that sounds as “chewy” as it does on Seconds Out and the Lyceum recordings.

@@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Sounds about right. Your sounds are always spot on. In regards to the organ model and phaser i use, i kind of lose. Because i use a cheap casio Organ sound (it's dry though, luckily no chorus baked into it). And about the phasers, i have a Dunlop and a 70s script. The Dunlop sounds the closest with the setting i mentioned, but it might be because it's much more "mid rangey" than the other 2 known versions of the Phase 100. My script one on the other hand sounds very very thin. It might need some revision with a technician, but i use the setting you use in this one.
@mattthomasoverdrive4514

My Phase 100s have not been rebuilt as far as I know (I haven’t had them that long). The RMI would sound brighter I bet if I had it recapped (68 oscillators, no thanks!). Only my ARP has been recapped, so that probably sounds the same as it would have in the 70s.

@@Aquatarkus96 Hi! By caps you mean capacitors right? I don't know much about electronics hehe. Yeah i definitely will take it to a technician. I have one doubt though. Will the sound of the pedal change if the capacitors are replaced? Or those components have nothing to do with the effect?

Yes. I got my RMI on eBay in the mid-2000s, had legs and lid, no pedal assembly (which is a unique two-cable thing with a swell and footswitch). About 7 years later I was in a synth restoration shop in NYC and asked if they could build me one, dude walks into a closet and came back with an original! I bought it on the spot. I’ve not heard other famous RMI recordings with pedal (Right Place, Wrong Time, Long Distance Runaround), but Tony used it a bunch (Carpet Crawlers, Lamb bridge) and it’s difficult to get samples to emulate the envelopes of the pedal versus non-pedal decay/sustain.
