When SRAM introduced the first 1x12 drivetrain back in 2016, it completely revolutionized the mountain bike industry. Originally available in XX1 and X01, and more recently GX, SRAM dominated the market with its multiple drivetrain options and set the standard for others to follow. Although Eagle converted many 2x10 and 1x11 riders, the XD freehub and high price point still kept some from making the switch. Now, with the introduction of NX Eagle, SRAM hopes to solve this dilemma and make 2x/3x drivetrains a thing of the past. Priced at $375 for the complete groupset, not only is it affordable, but it no longer requires the use of a proprietary XD freehub. We were lucky enough to get our hands on the kit prior to release and threw it on our Yeti SB5 for a review. Check it out!

Worldwide Cyclery yeap, still 6000 series cranks. Switch the cranks to GX 1400 cranks. CNC machined 7075 aluminum, 2 toned anodized, then you're on a roll!

have the NX shifting group on my transition 2018 scout with raceface aeffect cranks. I think the shift group works great. The jockey wheel broke after first few ride (likely my own fault), it was replaced and been fine since. Overall, shifts great, never had a problem with it's shifting even when it gets dirty. The clutch system really holds the chain well and keeps the shifting super clean. No noticeable chain slap, and no chain drop at all. I'm sure the NX Eagle will be just as good, and with the 1x12 52T... Superb on Sram's part for releasing something like this and pushing the cycling world forward.

this is not great. 11-50t 11s already exists. What are you gaining here? The loss of the 10t is more significant (10% less speed)

@@sibienf686 Not with those stupid cranks. Have had 2 different ones fall off on a ride. Switching to Sram cranks. I prefer cranks not being held on by two small clamp bolts.

Sorin Vasile Bogdan I would still use a 2x system on a trekking bike or sorts. I can totally see the use still for 2x, just imagine how smooth you could keep your cadence with 24speeds and a possible massive range!

I had a XO 1x 11 speed on my 29 plus bike, then switched to GX Eagle, kept my XO crank with a Wolftooth chain ring. Works perfect, can't be happier!

I bought the NX eagle for my scott spark 960 that had a 3x. It really is a great system. No problems after a few hard rides and shifts like GX and XO1 kits I have ridden on other bikes. If you're thinking about it, you wont be disappointed.

upgraded from 3x10 ,NX works perfect so far,just a glitch while shifting to 42T and 50T but realised had a bent derailleur.took it for a spin in kalahari desert(Botswana)-desert dash race..,no issue with sand/ground clearance.will recomend to anyone

Just ordered one! My biggest worry is when my mad keen MTBiking boss sees this on my bike he will think he’s paying me too much. Sram 12 speed was always just out of reach on my budget. Can’t wait to try it out! Remind me not to over take my my boss on the next hill climb.🚵‍♀️📈

I do like a double chainring too just for that big jump/drop in ratio when you need it, but getting rid of that front derailleur and freeing up that space in the cockpit for something like a dropper post lever has me sold.

Years ago, a 3x8 Sram x5 made me awake. Sram felt and works so well, and Shimano felt like was years behind Sram. And now i'm a loyal Sram fan, Shimano is good for brakes, but my bike drivetrain must be Sram. Shimano seem lazy, seems like if Sram not pushing them Shimano never moves.

Thanks for posting the prices, since the biggest difference is price and weight, it would be great to see a side by side of weight as well. It all just keeps getting better! I think I'll probably hold out for the XTR 12 speed and swap my wheel set/hub out for that system.

It’s SRAM finally noticing that other cassette manufacturers have 11 - 50 for hg free hub bodies to lower the costs of upgrading to 12 spd. Shimano needs to catch up. As for me, having a Sunrace 11 - 50 11spd. seems good. Lol 😂

Niidea1986 and they've madeit for the Shimano hub body!...they're laughing and flexing on them. Shimano just announced 12spd XTR and will take at least 2 years(but maybe this NX set will speed it up a little bit) before it will seep down to the more budget oriented SLX/XT set. But we will see...

615 grams vs 450 for the GX is a not fun penalty, but that cost is hard to beat. Also, if they are doing 11-50, that probably means the top end is something like 11-13-15-17-19 versus the other Eagle cassettes at 10-12-14-16-18. Might seem small, but in the high gears, one tooth more usually means a less abrupt jump in effort. The NX might have slightly nicer ratios (within the cassette itself,) than it's more expensive relatives.

Running NX on my GIANT YUKON 1 FATBIKE . I'm really impressed at how nice it works. My other bike has a saint groupo, I think NX shifts nicer. That's impressive

Just upgraded to the NX 1x11 and it came in under $200... somewhere in the neighborhood of $187... Why is so hard to get reviews on that set, my first ride impression where wonderful. Hills easier than the 3x8 I had on before.

We try to show the latest and most popular products for reviews but 1x11 is still a fantastic option to run on any mountain bike and definitely a big improvement over a 3x8 setup. I actually still run 1x11 on my Transition Smuggler. Thanks for watching. :)

This is so going to be on a lot of 2019 bikes... is it really a good thing? Many bikes come with GX eagle, the same bikes, at the same price, will probably come with NX instead...or maybe there will be more build options... we ll see.. good video as always !

Honestly I am glad there will be a cheaper replacement for GX Eagle stuff now. On most mid-range bikes GX Eagle comes cheaper than XT equivalent because bike manufacturers get good deals on them - and you are happy that you get better gear range on prebuilt bike. However, you as a user have to pay a hefty price for derailleur suddenly when you break it, not to mention how expensive cassette is (and why people quickly replace GX ones for Sunrace, for less than half a price). Now NX Eagle will make things even more affordable for those of us who use bikes, not just polish them and share on instagram.

My new hardtail came with Sram NX Eagle. It'll do for now but I'm a big fan of microshift Advent X. It shifts hard and fast where the NX Eagle is slower and little crunchy.

Recently sold my Giant Trance with full XT drivetrain & shifters, 2 piston XT brakes. My pushed budget now can get me a Scott Ransom 920 that comes with a NX drivetrain/shifters and 4 piston deore setup. GX and SLX 4 piston would be a no brainer for me but my local bike shops don't swap stock parts on bikes. Even if they do, it's gonna be lot more expensive than it should be. Maybe I'll have to live with NX for few years now 😔

SRAM makes it easier to source and build your conversion. Still not sure what components I'd grab from Shimano, and no obvious groupsets either. Def going SRAM, and Dub is affordable and simple to figure out too!

With the nx eagle sram puts a big hit on Shimano, shimano just launched 12 speed and only on the super costly xtr only compatible with it's own hub... Sram is doing the opposite bringing the 12 speed to all, and not only xd hubs but shimano hubs also... Guess shimano is too proud to use xd driver and save us a headache with another hub standard...

Rafael Sataray Probably there is a difference using a 30 years old - maybe even expired - patent or license something that might not even fit their production preferences. If you have the cash for XTR level stuff then a freehub body is just peanuts... SRAM also made a new BB ‘standard’ with their DUB which is not compatible with their existing cranks. They were also ‘too proud’ perhaps? Or if SRAM does it then it’s different? :)

Rafael Sataray None of your existing GXP or BB30 cranks are compatible with DUB. When SRAM will decide no more GXP bottom bracket you can buy a whole crankset with it... no different to Shimano’s new freehub body.

Everything works great whether all the components are all the same Eagle group level or mix and match.

Tamas Varga I've heard about questionable quality coming out of Sunrace. I'm also willing to pay 150g for a full steel cassette that won't wear out fast.

Bflutz 625 Sure... I’m currently running two sunrace 11 speed cassettes and not a single issue in two years. To me the less than 10% range difference compared to an 11 speed 11-46 and the boat anchor cassette makes it absolutely useless and based on my experience with the GX Eagle’s flimsiness the shifting quality will be ‘meh’... but hey, 12 is more than 11... That’s the only thing going for it in my opinion but I couldn’t care less about it. More extreme chain line and the rear mech will drag on the ground...

It's a personal preference as far as SRAM vs Shimano. They both work great but actually shift and feel completely different.

The GX is higher in the range than The NX. The shimano XT is higher up than the SLX I believe, since I'm a Sram guy not a shimano guy. I guys Sram vs Shimano is like the competition between hardtail vs full suspension, alloy vs steel, 29er vs 27.5, long and slack vs short and playful. It's all up to you really

Nice way of SRAM to launch a new "budget" Eagle drivetrain. I would like to convert my 3 x 8 drivetrain to this new NX drivetrain. But I ride with 26" wheels, and i think that the derailleur is that long that I hits every rock on the trail. So I think it would not be the upgrade for me, what would you think?

I run Eagle GX with the Sunrace 11-50 12-speed cassette on my bike with 26" wheels and have had no problems at all with clearance on the derailleur. If NX was available when I did my bike conversion I would have jumped at it.

GX has more range and weighs less, otherwise they should function the same. GX is more expensive so it really depends on your own budget.

Yes, everything in the Eagle family of products are cross-compatible. The only thing that is different in the NX group is the HG compatible cassette vs every other Eagle cassette is XD freehub body only.

It's a great cost effective way to upgrade your drivetrain especially if you have a Shimano HG freehub body. Hard to beat the gear range for the money!

Yea you're gonna want to make sure the cassette will fit on the freehub since there's a pretty big gap between 9 speed and 12 speed, that's adding three extra gears. If your hub was specifically designed for a nine speed you'll need a hub upgrade too

I ride on a older drive train a Sram X7 3x9 which I like but always wanted to upgrade. I just could never get myself to spend the money. I always ask myself "How much more do I want to put into this bike?"

That is something we might do but I can tell you that we have received no negative feedback from the guys who have been riding the original test equipment since it came out. Also our customer who have purchased it from us have had nothing but good things to say. :)

Ive recently bought a trek rail with full nx,the rear mech wobbles by hand,the stranded cable came right out due to the sram snapalot udh getting a quick nip up to 24.4nm,had to use a cone head tungsten carbon drill bit to get the udh out,it span both ways so i had no choice or help,the shop took thousands of pounds from me and said push it to tram station and tape your rear mech to rear carbon frame,all frame bolts were under torqued so it was in death trap catergory,9am to 4.20pm ish to sell it to me.2021 edition.engineer said we dont release bike that way,yet i didnt see him once on the day of sale,sadly bikes are about greed these days and yes i had a mtb from when they hit the uk,scott usa marins galore,bontrager,specialised m series in red,GT rts,so this trek rail was my final bike,im scared to ride it due to this sram udh and the fine yorkshire bike mechanic fixed tons of these sram rear udh,check his channel out. and we all sit and say "oh well nevermind",im livid are you?

My brother just got a bike with NX eagle, it is really good compared to Shimano XT 1x11. However the shifter feels pretty weak and slippery compared to GX eagle and xx1 eagle shifters

The cool thing is that you can use one of those higher level shifters with the NX Eagle components. :)

I have GX eagle, and the derailleur is weak! On my 3rd in ~500km. First one bent by a twig and 2nd don't even know why it was out, but not even visibly out or damaged just started shifting poor. Replaced and all good again. Next one will be x01. Hopefully forged alloy is better. Be prepared to replace derailleur often or upgrade!

Same with mine. I scraped a rock and now it goes out of adjustment every single ride. I might upgrade to a gx.

aren't the 8,9, and 10 spd freehub bodies slightly shorter in length from the 11spd freehub body that NX fits on

NX is compatible on any HG freehub body that is 8sp and up. Some 11sp HG freehub bodies that come on certain wheel brands are a little longer for 11sp and run a spacer behind the cassette for anything gearing 10sp and below.

Will I be able to put this on my bike if it has a Shimano Deore 3x8? I'm considering upgrading to this groupset since I've been having shifting issues for 3 months now and I think it's time for an upgrade.

That NX cassette is an absolute anchor. How much weight are you realistically saving over say an XT 2x? I’ll pay the $100 extra and go GX...or go NX and find a deal on an X01 cassette. The biggest difference between the Eagle groups is in the weight of the cassettes...and maybe the cranks. I’ll stick with my 11sp for now.

shifting speed can be improved (Specialized Epic Comp 29 2020) . Also is quite fragile. Small hit and you have to straighten it back..

You should be good if your bike is relatively new and has an HG Shimano freehub body.

Yes it should. 8 speed uses same freghub as this 12 speed cassette. It's just as wide.

Front chainring will be 32T on NX cranks and you will have an option for 165, 170, and 175mm :) Different chainrings can be purchased aftermarket. Gota go with Lays...definitely the baked ones...

I recently got Sram NX Eagle on my Trek roscoe 8 I find shifting into the 42t and 50t cog won't work. I have looked into other reviews and only 1 mentions this, apparently it is with all eagle (gx xo1 xx1 and nx) but only some have the problem, people say it's because of the narrow wide 50t on the cassette, I also couldn't tune it properly, whenever i fixed it all the other cogs would be horrible to change gears with. please tell me if you have the same issue, and know how to fix it

I would take your bike into a professional mechanic to have them take a look. It sounds like you could have a bent derailleur hanger.

do they make replacement cogs for nx or do you have to buy the whole cassette? My 11 tooth is popping. Chain lasted 200 miles before it stretched and broke so I got a gx chain now 100 miles later the 11 tooth is going out. I guess they should have specked my bike with a 36 front instead of a 34. I haven't even scratched the paint on the 50 tooth but the bottom side of the cassette is going fast. I was hoping for a year out of this before it died and I fixed it with shimano 12 speed but it doesn't look like its gonna last that long.
