Younger Gen X here. (75) Was 15 when Grunge exploded. I hated the hair bands and all of the neon colors and its message. Was at a HS party when Nirvanas “ In bloom” played. The room fell silent as the song played. It was magical when grunge happened. Hated the movie Singles. It’s should have been a coming of age teen movie for us Younger Gen X teens. Like American pie. Hated the fact we had no Grunge movie for us. In my HS in Arizona. Every car in the parking lot played. AIC, soundgarden or Nirvana…

The movie sucked but the soundtrack for Singles is incredible. "Seasons" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

I was born in 78 and I never hated hair music. I remember 1984 was one of the first albums I had. However I remember getting Nevermind right after it dropped on my 13th birthday. As soon as I heard it, I thought this is what I’ve been waiting for and grunge changed my life during my coming of age. Also agree with you on singles. I went and seen it with my buddies anyway just because we ate up anything with our favorite rockstars in it.

Yea but look at the message and characters of singles(I know it was 20 somethings but I was 20 something at the time) and compare that with the nu-metal movies like american pie.I'm glad to be associated with singles and the "PC" characters, the ones in AP were cringey to say the least. So be glad you're in better company. So happy what it stood for then, before tge corporations took it over and monetized it

RIP Andrew Wood. If he hadn’t died his name would be one of the biggest of the Seattle scene. Apple is such a slept on gem of 90’s delight. A tasty, vintage beverage to quench your thirst for sweet Seattle goodness

Why do people from Seattle act like Seattle is a small town? It has a million people.

For one, most of these bands weren't from Seattle. They were from much smaller towns around Seattle. They played in Seattle, but they also played lots of shitty party gigs and tiny bars.

" I don't like guns" therefore no one should have them. Thats literally the thought process of 2nd amendment haters. That and I'm scared of them and know nothing about them, therefore they're bad. You can't have them, either. Naw.

Cobain had everything to live for. There was no way he would abandon his daughter and give his legacy to a woman he hated/was going o divorce. Not without being murdered.

He was overwhelmed and heartbroken. Plus, he was hopelessly addicted to H and it was affecting every aspect of his life. The pressure of having a cheating wife, daughter who didn't recognize him when he returned from tours. Pressure to play Lollapalooza or else miss out on millions and have to lay off dozens of crew and managers. All the calls to the cops for domestic disturbances.

An argument presented without evidence (such as yours) needs no evidence to argue against it. So, i wouldn't make such claims with nothing but narrative if i were you.

His addiction was miserable and being in a massive way too big band with the pressure of being as big as pop stars when he'd rather be as big as Melvins

*Okay, there were LA 'hair bands' galore, but let's not forget that the 'punks' existed before them and untidy people in bands existed parallel to LA. The hardcore/No Wave scenes had plenty of ragamuffins about. Most UK bands were very rough looking as well. Seattle wasn't the Eldorado of rock n roll, either. Australia had tonnes of bands to be considered supposed 'grunge' bands long before Nirvana even formed. But let's go with the 'OFFICIAL STORY' as we've always had to do. It's much easier that way. It's as lazy as saying only bands like Pink Floyd existed in abundance before Sex Pistols*

Good point. Got it. Janes Addiction predates Nirvana, as Jonathan Richman predates weird D Byrne, as does the Saints predate Soundgarden or Melvin's. So yeah agreed.

You can play this game with any genre until you drive yourself crazy. The fact is none of them made the impact that Nirvana did with Smells Like Teen Spirit. It was the right song at the right time and it change the game. The dam broke and a new scene exploded, the rest is history. I get it though. At the time it must’ve felt different for the British to be following the trends instead of breaking them. US became the Mecca of cool culture
