Күн бұрын

In this week's video, I break down the main riff in "Scuttle Buttin'", the first track on Stevie Ray Vaughn's second studio album, "Couldn't Stand The Weather". There are Tabs at two points in the video. One where I break down the riff out of time, and again where the Tabs run in tempo to my performance. There's also a quick Logic Pro tip on how to change the tempo on your backing track audio files! And a special thanks to Back Track Guitar KZfaq channel for the backing track! See their link below. As always, Guitar On!!

It’s been said if you practise anything… 10,000 times, you will become expert at it. During lockdown I bought an 88key Roland piano not really knowing how to play it. Transferring my guitar knowledge to it made a little easier but after two years Im actually proficient enough to play piano in my band lol!

Hey iZac! That's awesome, man! You must be referring to the 10,000 HOUR concept from Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers. But I suspect even doing something 10,000 times would raise your proficiency considerably! I piddle around on the piano a little myself, and I'm still getting better with time, even at my age;) That's really cool that you got that good in two years though. Good luck with your music!!

Just checked another tutorial, and there is that quick slide on the g string, in the second part of the riff, from a to a# then sliding back to finish the riff. The guy is quite sure SRV plays it that way. I tried, and both styles work fine. Thanks again.

@@ChuckJonesMusic Aw man, I was just goofin with ya. Just a little blip at 1:38 or so, no biggie. I'm working on this one and been watching a lot of different styles, not even to the solos yet. On the Em9 and A7 chords in the main riff, after down on the bass note I like to strum it U-U-U-D(muted)-U. I've seen Stevie do it like that at least some times and it seems like it has the right energy flow. Also, someone somewhere said he recorded the song with the first part of the riff on the G string as a bend cause he's a monster, but later after touring with it for a bit, he decided to go with the slide. Maybe saved him breaking some strings, I guess?
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic Жыл бұрын
@@johnharreld4875 Ha ha! Yeah, what you're seeing there is when I edited two video takes together;) I can't recall how I do the rhythm riff, but probably mostly down strokes. As for Stevie bending that main riff on the G string, I don't doubt that he recorded it that way. That's what I thought when I first learned the song from the record when it first came out. We didn't have KZfaq then to check his live performances;) But after it taking so much energy to bend that G string, I finally started sliding it way back then. More lately when I saw videos of him sliding it, I assumed he just always did. But seeing as he played heavy strings (little E was a 13 or so I've heard), I don't blame him for not wanting to bend that G string any more than he had to! It's a chore for me even with 10s!

SRV plays the last four notes of the riff as even spaced semiquavers ,not as you are timing it, which makes you finish a quarter beat early.
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, you're absolutely right. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I actually play it both ways in the full performance at the start of the video, but I have it as a semiquaver triplet on the tablature/notation and in the breakdown part of the video. I learned the tune so long ago, guess I got it twisted in my mind somehow;)

,Chuck kindly responded to my comment and said that he plays the lick better now ,without the quaver triplet and that he was aware of the difference in how he plays it since he posted the video.
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel, for having my back;) But Monkeysbum999 is correct, and I'm always open to constructive criticism! I think I actually started playing the lick as a triplet subconsciously, to give me that extra quarter beat to get back to that bottom E string, due to the fact that the song is so dang fast! BTW, I just uploaded the corrected TABs to my website. Also, I recently learned from another KZfaqr that SRV actually did use hybrid picking on this lick, a fact he noticed when manipulating and improving old footage of SRV performing the song. So, I was wrong about that as well;) And, ya'll let me know what you think about my most recent upload (yesterday) of SRV's Couldn't Stand the Weather. That one was a real bear;) I noticed a couple of mistakes in the tutorial part myself, after uploading. Would love it if ya'll are moved to share any of this stuff. Great lesson Chuck. I‘m going to try this tune. How do you have your pickups set? Also what amp and effects? Thanks.
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! I'm using a Jeff Beck Signature Strat in this video. The pickups are the Fender "Noiseless" or "Hot Noiseless" that came stock on it. I bought it second hand, but I believe they're set pretty much as they came from the factory. I dig the pickups. They sound good and punchy. As for amp and effects, I'm using the Logic Pro X DAW, playing through a Steven Slate virtual amp plug-in (with effects), the Overloud TH-U, I think it's called. Inside that plugin, I've selected the Bassface '59 head, through the Tweed '59 cab, with the following virtual stomp boxes: Tube Nine (Tube Screamer) RSS Compressor, D-Reverb. It's a really cool plug-in, but I like the Guitar Rig from Native Instruments as well. Good luck with the tune man!

Ha! Very kind of you man. I had to struggle to pick it this fast, and it's still a few clicks behind where Stevie played it. It would not have been such a struggle though, had I known Stevie was using some alt picking. I was trying to get it under hand as close to the way he played it as possible, just cuz;) I've been finger picking, playing classical, etc., since I was a teenager myself, so I'm no stranger to alternative picking. I think I even tried it on this, but decided at the time it would be cheatin'!!!;) I've been practicing it a bit today using his middle finger alt on that one note, and dang if it don't make a heck of a difference. Here's a toast to modern video editing and the dude on Texas Blues Alley spottin' this!!

Chuck Jones Music very cool. to be honest i meant ‘alternate picking’ up/down... not hybrid. ;) ala the string jumps of Mclaughlin to the lines of Dimeola! :)) but yes, nowadays i’m big on the thumb and a finger or two. ✌️... i’m still with the pick, too, though... gotta have for SRV! ...you picking is Great!
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic 4 жыл бұрын
ichisatori All good man!! And thanks for the props! I think you said alt picking, as did I, but I think we really are talking about hybrid tho, right? We were already using alt picking (alternating up and down strokes), but by mixing in a finger picked note, as in the middle finger trick, that makes it hybrid. At least that’s my understanding;) I guess I meant to say “hybrid” myself!

Ha ha! Hey Bill, are you talking about SRV or you?;) I saw Stevie Ray play a couple of times in Memphis in the early 80s when he was doing a lot of coke. Definitely didn't hurt his playing as far as I could tell. This was around the time I first learned Scuttlebuttin' from the record. Then I saw him play in Nashville (where I'd moved to pursue songwriting) about 3 months before he died in the copter crash. He had found God by then, and been in recovery for at least a couple years and I can definitely say that none of that hurt his playing either;) He was truly on fire that night. Long live Stevie Ray Vaughn indeed!!

Sounds great, what headphones + equipment for recording are you using?
@ChuckJonesMusic
@ChuckJonesMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! My headphones are Audio Technica ATH-M50x. They're great studio phones and cost around $150. My DAW (digital audio workstation) is Apple's Logic Pro X, version 10.5.0. You can buy Logic Pro for $200 and it is possibly the best deal on any software in existence. I love and have used Pro Tools as well, but for the money, Logic Pro has it beat hands down. The guitar amp plug - in I'm using for Scuttle Buttin' is Overloud TH-U. I'm just using their 59 Bassman Tube Screamer preset w a couple of tweaks. My Strat in this video is a 2014 Jeff Beck Signature model, so basically an American Strat. Bought it used on Ebay in 2015 for $1200. The track I'm playing to here is a backing track I converted to mp3 from the Backing Track Guitar KZfaq Channel. So I didn't actually play any of the instruments on the track except for the lead guitar. Thanks for watching! @@rossman265 No worries bro, you're welcome! I know, I hate it that Apple doesn't make Logic Pro for PC, but then again, it's kind of another loss leader for them to sell hardware, I'd imagine;) ProTools has several options, some of which are really affordable, but the more affordable, the less features. There are however, multiple awesome DAWs on the market now. I know one that a lot of pop producers use is Ableton, which is pretty cool, but a whole different mindset from your average DAW. If I were shopping at the moment, I'd just Google some "Top 5" or "Top 10" DAWs and go from there. Most of them operate pretty much the same. My one piece of advice, if you're just getting into home recording, is to just take it slow and learn new features as you need them. To begin, all you'll need to do is know how to press record and play;) Best of luck!
