Eight years after the French Line redefined the ocean liner with the ILE DE FRANCE they took their signature Art Deco look to its ultimate conclusion -- the NORMANDIE. She was the largest, fastest, and most beautiful liner ever built when she entered service in 1935. In the eyes of many she remains the pinnacle of naval art and architecture. In the midst of a friendly argument over what vessel was the "most beautiful ship ever built" she remains the safest choice. Although celebrated in her time, and in the decades since, her career was brief and unprofitable. A significant amount of her interior volume was devoted entirely to her awe inspiring First Class spaces. The crucially important, financially speaking, Second and Third/Tourist Class were given much less emphasis. The average transatlantic passenger saw the vessels of lines like Cunard-White Star as more traditional and comfortable. Even so, she was enormously successful as the ultimate Ship of State -- asserting the significance and power of France upon the world stage. Vive la France! The outbreak of WWII resulted in her internment by the US government on 3 September 1939. It seemed to many that the pride of France may spend the war quietly at dock in the west side of New York City. Upon American entry into the conflict in December 1941 the SS NORMANDIE began her conversion to the troopship USS LAFAYETTE. As an American I'm a bit ashamed that the US Navy is ultimately responsible for her humiliating death. On 9 February 1942 sparks from a welder ignited a pile of life vests. The ensuing fire resulted in the destruction and capsizing of the most beautiful liner ever built. Despite this she remains the aesthetic standard by which every passenger ship is judged.

A legend. Unbeatable ship. I feel sorry for other liners of the time like the Queen Mary, but they just get overshadowed. The Normandie had a brief career, but she rightfully earned an immortal fame. Thank you so much for this magnificent video.

What a production! Loved it. The song and music went beautifully with the footage. What a sight the Normandie was from the air. We can see how she almost glided through the ocean; amazing that people can make something so enormous that scarcely disturbs the water. A few seconds of the footage beginning at 1:57 I'm certain I saw in the opening of "Citizen Kane".

+Andrew Brendan Thank you! Normandie was a remarkable liner. It's no surprise that QE2 and QM2 borrow as much from her as they do any classic Cunarder. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

If Normandie had survived WWII and returning back to passenger services after being a troop carrier ship I would imagine portions of the ship would have been modified to her make her more attract the customers that on ocean liners like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth like adding more commendations for 2nd and tourist class making her more profitable. Also I think the famous long dining room would have been shorten but include retractable walls and include a dance hall. The reason imagine if your waiter working there at a table at the end of the room and the Kitchen is if at the long room and you have walk all the to the end back and forth all night zig-zag through tables. Even Father Roberto Pirrone the creator of the cutaway ship modules like the Normandie calls the long dining room "a dining room from Hell." So what do you think of what the Normandie would have been like in her post-war era? If you want to see the video on Father Roberto ship models you should check out this video talking with one of the developers of Titanic: Honor and Glory: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5afm7eEssm7ho0.html
