The SS Normandie was a French ocean liner built in Saint-Nazaire, France, for the French Line Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). She entered service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat, crossing the Atlantic in a record 4.14 days, and remains the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built

These models not only tell the story of nearly two centuries of ocean travel, but also represent the beauty of the shipbuilder’s art and craft. Father Pirrone first introduced photos of his still-incomplete NORMANDIE model during the Titanic Historical Society Convention in 1998 (I think that was the year). We were all absolutely amazed by the stunning detail he put into his work! The photos he showed through slide-projection were so well-taken, it was almost as if they were REAL COLOR photos taken of the ship in 1935!

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to show the majesty of Father Pirrone’s exquisite model of the loveliest ship ever to go to sea. Time and patience have always been short on visits to RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. Even with Father Pirrone generously providing an overview of his stunning work in-person, the ability to properly do justice to all of his meticulous detail is difficult. Thanks to this video and to recent digital re-creations of the incomparable SS Normandie, we can now visualise and conceptualise just where everything was located on the ship. This video is a wonderful asset to those curious about the fabled Ship of Light and Father Pirrone’s masterpiece.

The next best thing to the legendary passenger ship itself- a work of art made with attention to detail and care. The French created a floating art moderne version of the place of Versailles, while the British created a floating art deco English country estate and won the prize for elegance blended with comfort.
