Shields are an interesting piece of equipment in Space Station 14. I often see people discuss how they work, so this video compiles all the need to know info.

Shields are INSANELY unused. I only see like 1 seccie with 60 plus people use a shield.

Here's why you never see shields: In a non-nukies "calm" scenario, like code blue, using a riot shield is risky, because if you get slipped, you can get your shield stolen immediately by anyone. If you're in a situation of being up against a traitor going loud, often they'll be using something like a holoparasite which will blow through your shield anyways, or your other hand slot would be better used holding a stun baton. In a nukies scenario, their heavy weapons are going to shred your shield like wet paper, and sure it MIGHT save you once, but that's about it unless you grab a new one

@rubles3143 yeah stun/slip meta. They can even steal the shield for themselves during a firefight. Plus the jank when using firearms. You would have to either drop the gun or shield while reloading. One push would fuck your life up.

I remember using a riot shield against the pre-nerf IEDs duffel bomb and it was definitely useful.

Oh hey, I added the vwoom sound to the energy shield. Nice to see that in your video. I was kinda thinking that maybe energy shields and eswords should have a battery component, make them powerful but timed.

Shields are really good on expeditions, I recommend trying to get an one as a salvage specialist

Also, I recommend taking off your hardsuit on expeditions, and trying to find the detvend, it has some armor in it which can be useful. To be clear, I usually use knives to fight so I'm talking about a melee setup @@thebadman6169

E shields are extremely broken on nukies even with regular blood reds. Playing security during a nukie round especially on more tryhard servers like salamander is painful because every time its the same rush armory with e shields meta. E shields should be a strong anti laser tool as crew lasers are one of their best defenses against nukies in how they can shoot through doors. But they should have some kind of weakness/counter

@@kyokonull I just mean mander players tend to be more familiar with game mechanics and especially as nukies tend to be more coordinated and effective than on LRP where you get lots of first time flukies

Could you do a video about passive healing? I don't understand what influences it. I once gave myself minor burntls until I stopped healing. Is it related to how full (hunger/thirst) I am? Maybe you could cover alternative forms of passive healing, for antag ghost roles alike.

If you have more than 20 total damage you stop healing brute and heat damage.

@@ButcherTTV The main one I don't understand is "lifeforms in the vents," but I don't know how many there are or what they all do. I know Solar Flare takes out random comms channels, and there's one that disables random APCs, I don't completely understand what the "clerical error" one does that results in "overstaffing in certain departments and understaffing in others" but I think it has something to do with changing the crew manifest? There's lots of them though and it would be interesting to know how they mechanically function. There's one that sends a random item to cargo for instance and I have no idea what items it can send.

Emp works versus things that have a charge. So anything with a battery, to include borgs, and stun batons laser guns. Laser swords and energy shields are unaffected.

eshields/eswords having a battery life could be an interesting soft nerf, would also make EMP indirectly stronger. one of the downsides to the e-stuff is the sound of them turning on/off, so having that extra reason to bother doing so would tie in that way too

i understand why most people would find this confusing but as someone who plays kenshi and has to deal with armor layer and resistance effeciancy chance mechanics regularly i got it pretty quick. but yeah, the wording could really use a re-write, very unintuitive

Yeah I would much rather it just get nerfed than removed from syndies. 8 tc for a shittier eshield might not be worth it anyway, it is already a huge chunk of your budget but it only lasts about 2 fights as it is now...

I don't see people use shields often, so the only time I ever see someone dual wield them is with the riot shields - Is that essentially pointless in terms of combat since only the durability/effects of one shield are taken into account? Aside from being able to keep tanking once the first one breaks, and if you're actually taking a 2nd shield to give to someone else, I guess. I'm assuming they're too big to be stored.. One more question, are shields directional? That is, if I shoot someone in the back when they have a shield in their hand, do they still get the damage reduction? Thanks!

One shield breaks then it just goes to the next shield. So its like having an 80 hp shield with 2 riot shields. Shields are not directional, they work the same from all angles.

So if a baseball bat does 10blunt, the shield takes 4.5 damage? 50% of 10 Shield takes 90% of 5?

Correct. And 5 would go to the user and then be reduced by their armor or species benefits.
