GREAT job explaining the info in a short time. Helped even a non tech savvy guy like me, get an understanding how this stuff works. The ONLY shortcoming was, no mention of how eMMC fits into all this.

Great video, it confirmed my answer. About this Mac on Macs that come with Flash Storage says “Flash Storage”. When I upgrade a Mac with an SSD, the Mac reports “Solid State SATA Drive”.

older macs have upgradable storage new ones have fixed in ram and ssds ur correct apple uses sata ssds but they also use m.2 ssd drives up to 2016 macbook pro m.2 are smller thinner but come in sata aswell but most sata drives are 2.5 inch ssds mainly used in laptops windows or apple devices.. hope thats helps

I'm making a RAID array for a p-2-p client, I found this very insightful. A flash drive array sounds wacky but I think it would be worthwhile especially since the client will take up very little information.

And here I am trying to figure out what storage solution is best for me due to having filled my phone full of memes and now I have to move them to a separate storage. I've had bad experiences with micro sd in the past, they seem to randomly become corrupted. :(

@@unitedastronomer hahah I shall be the one who finally replies 👼🏼! So I ended up getting the ssd since it's faster and can store more since it has higher capacity. Keep in mind I'm sooo bad with tech so idk if I even made the right choice 😅 but that's what I went with & why ☺️

@@miao7002 It usually has a higher life span than a Hard Disk too. Also how much you can store is more driven by price than higher capacity. Yes while the SSD is more dense it just means they can make it smaller not that you can store more. So if you are low on physical space SSD makes more sense. 1TB SSD = 1TB HDD. What it comes down to is price now. It is faster for sure tho. That said SSD can have a higher capacity. If they made it the size of an HDD it will have a lot more storage.

Cellphones have a solid-state drive. That's the broader term. Because most SSDs consist of Flash Memory, one could say that your phone saves data in its flash, even when turning it off SSD - name of a storage device without moving parts used in an application (smartphone, laptop, PC) Flash Memory - specific type of storage Technology based on floating gate Transistors small differences result in bigger confusion :D

m.2 is just the type like u get m.2 sata or nmves or u can have ssd that is not m.2 but 2.5inch for latops or even sd cards for phones is flash storage u can get upto about 1tb now

I would like to archive 25 year old video files as .mp4's, these would not be accessed again unless other backup files had been corrupted. Suggestions? Would a thumbdrive be fine since its not being accessed unless one or two times and perhaps never?

I would use a hard drive for that because they are the one of the most reliable storage mediums and also offer large capacity for less money than an ssd

Yes definitely. SSD needs only half the power that a normal harddisk drive takes. You'll notice a difference in your battery consumption too

I don't use SSDs. I like more reliable HDDs. And I like flash drives; I did read my drive would last 10 years. I started using it 2018; so I got 7 years left.

u can get ones with m.2 sata drives samsung are best but u can also get 2.5 inch ssd samsung are good and these are cheaper if u dont need to move large files quickly go for 2.5 sata samsung drive if u need really hevy use go for m.2 sata samsung but they cost more there are few other types but these two main ones hope that helps

Just wanted to drop a friendly note and point out some errors in your video. The oldest type of storage is punch cards, then came tape, and finally HDD. HDD's can actually last decades as I have some that are easily 20 to 30 years old and still have data on them. My oldest HDD from circa 1988 has completely failed, so HDD can last a very long time when properly handled. And lastly, NAND is pronounced NAND not N A N D, and is named after the NAND gate in computer logic. There is also NOR storage, named after the NOR gate in computer logic.

thanks for the video! great informations... However, I almost got all of it (in my brain), towards the end my HDD brain can't keep up with SSD and flash ssd, so my ADHD kicked in. What I'm looking for, i guess is, can USB Thumb Flash be as reliable long term storage as external SSD? any advice is appreciated.. thanks

No. Flash is not that reliable and also easily lost. For long long term storage, hdd is still better than ssd. Ssd are best for speed and to boot the OS and programs from.

‼️🤣 solid state does NOT mean “no moving parts”. Who keeps perpetuating this crap out of nowhere? Solid state is and always was the descriptor used for devices which don’t use VACUUM STATE switches, aka vacuum tubes. Vacuum and solid are just the different mediums used in the two technologies. Dear god the ignorance 🤡 There are solid state radios from the 1950s. Did they need moving parts for non-solid state radios? 🤣
