Unbelievable. The leave me alone mindset regarding religion makes sense. That mindset is also present amongst conservative or conservative-leaning political types. Thus, there is no real, concrete purpose to government or churches. Both are voluntary association (consent of governed, consent of participating). Wow. We are really messed up. Catholicism might scare people because of a clarity of purpose and certitude of action with order and authority established by God. I think, however, the ambiguity embodied in the lack of clarity and certitude and order with authority in the Americanist system is far more terrifying. It is also how we are so easily undermined by revolutions. I once thought Americanism was akin to Ceasero-papism, but I think the U.S. goes well beyond that because we do not have anything like a potential for Catholic unity like the Eastern churches do. Wow. Mary Immaculate, pray for us!

A very timely broadcast, thank you so much. I have been deeply saddened by a lot of the recent Catholic American on-line content. The extravagance at which Donald Trump has been eulogised has been rather shameful. 'One must somehow find a way of loving the world, without trusting it' - GK Chesterton.

This is fascinating, but I wish I had learned this sooner. My daughter recently returned to the Church after years of fearing she would learn heresy (not an unreasonable fead), but her young adult children, all out of high school, have requested they be Baptized so they can go to Mass, too. Suddenly I feel uneducated, despite my years of studying and teaching my own children. Hopefully this will help me see the stumbling blocks I didn't recognize before.

This is very informative, here’s the thing that I realize with many catholic. So the church has every single right and the church comes first before any law is the land. You can not put anything above that. Many catholic do. Such as “separation” church and state. No such thing in the catholic faith. So Catholics remember there’s nothing with being a proud American but anything that goes against the church teachings is not to be accepted.

Thank you for this episode. Very informative. Father’s audio was a bit distracting but the disclaimer at the beginning explaining it helped to put the noise in proper perspective! This was a visually appealing format and very nice touch with the accompanying text. God bless!

“America today is the only country where I am truly considered a Pope in the eyes of the Government. In the nations of Europe, I have reason to fear that my acts are checked or rejected by the governments. But I can send any pontifical document whatsoever to America with complete freedom and without fear that the Government might oppose its publication.” ~ Pope Pius IX, confiding to an American priest named Fr. Delay (1) Notes: 1. Zaratti, Alfonso, The Work of the Catholic Church in the United States of America (Rome: Nardini, 1956), p. 269.

Bishop John Ireland drove Eastern Catholics out of the Catholic Church (back) to Orthodoxy. Fr. Alexis Toth was instrumental in this (re-)assimilation.

The Political Philosophy of Jefferson = The Political Philosophy of Bellarmine “There is something in Jefferson’s copy of the original edition [of Patriarcha by Sir Robert Filmer] which was obviously added subsequent to its publication. The addition is in the margin, opposite the very passage in which Filmer analyzes Bellarmine’s views, as quoted on a previous page. It is a line made in lead pencil, apparently to call special attention to the doctrines of Bellarmine. Now lead pencils were in use before the Declaration of Independence was drafted and signed and, lacking evidence to prove that Jefferson did not himself make the mark in question, we may well incline to the belief that it is Jefferson’s mark until the contrary is proved. In any event, the political philosophy of Jefferson was the political philosophy of Bellarmine as set forth by Filmer.” ~ James Brown Scott, Professor of International Law, Roman Law and Jurisprudence in Georgetown University, 1939 (1) Notes: 1. Scott, James Brown, Law, the State, and the International Community, Vol. I (New York: Columbia University Press, 1939), p. 551.

You completely disregarded the huge Catholic majority in the Southwest American territory with the Spanish conquest. In fact, there were several martyred clergy and laymen in New Mexico in the 1600’s. There were huge Missions throughout the western states. California had huge Missions that extended through the entire state. Those territories were not technically apart of the US until after the Louisiana purchase and the Gadsden purchase. However, the patriotic love the Spanish people had for the US was instantaneous. The American Army took New Mexico without a shot fired. The Spanish people welcomed the American ‘s with open arms and much charity. In fact, Spanish surnames dominated those of European surnames in the civil war on the side of the Republic. Many Spanish American’s were awarded medals for gallantry in battle with the Confederates. Namely, Lioncito LTC Manuel Chaves and his cousin Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves, who was honored by having a county named after him for his heroic efforts in the civil war and the Indian War’s. Manuel Chaves is also credited with confronting the apostate heretic Archbishop Lamy and Machbuff for their blasphemous unholy sodomic behavior. The Spanish Catholic influence was and is gargantuan in the Southwest United States.

You're absolutely right about these facts - but keep in mind this is not a "History of Catholic America" episode - if that were the case, yes, we would have missed a huge chunk. Instead, we were focusing on the errors that came out of Catholic America - and notably, you'll notice Spanish-origin names absent from those who held errors. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

Bishop Lamy was in New Mexico in 1850. Santa Fe has the oldest Church in the United States not to mention the oldest Catholic Church in the US. Santa Fe has the second oldest continuous church congregations, 1598! Hey, I love this series, but you left out a huge chunk of American Catholic history! Plus, you left out St. Augustine, FL, 1565! You included the white Baltimore guys and left out all the Spanish guys that were here along time before the white guys! I don’t think you are racist Fr. Loop, but you need to correct your history in this video! Give credit where credit is due! Remember we are seeking truth!
