Fr. Wiseman goes through the "Remote Background" to the Crisis - that is, the very origins of the Crisis in the Church. We'll start in the 1300's with Nominalism, and then move on to the errors of Martin Luther, how those two topics are connected, and what the response of the Church was at that time.
Please support this project so we can continue to bring you detailed, in-depth analysis of Catholicism today: sspx.gifts/collections/frontp...

45:38 As a former Protestant who converted to the Catholic Faith I can answer how I (and others I've talked to) would deal with 'knowing' I was saved. For me it wasn't just building up the internal feelings again. Maybe some do this in the 'praise and worship' services but I didn't. I would find passages in the Holy Scriptures like, "For if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Rom. 10:9 and say to myself, I've done all of this, I'm relying on the Word of God, therefore I believe in the promise contained in this passage. It says, "thou shalt be saved" so I must be "saved". A well grounded Protestant will be relying on the objective truth of the Holy Scriptures. Of course the problem is that we were relying on our interpretation of a few select passages instead of the interpretation of the 2000 yr. old Magisterium of the Catholic Church. When I started to see (by the grace of God) that Protestants reading the same Holy Bible kept coming up with different interpretations and then not fellowshipping with each other, the gig was up. Reading the Church Fathers who lived in the centuries just after the apostles opened my eyes as well. Hope this helps to understand how some Protestants think.

You described my experience as well, how could a clear Bible passage mean so many different things, often in direct contradiction to what it says? But, I’ve been disappointed in the Catholic Church because people seem to do the same, or they follow a mystic and ignore scripture entirely. It never occurred to me that there is a whole philosophy that justifies or teaches that truth is inside you, it’s reflected in your feelings. No wonder our entire culture is swimming in the gutter, our nature tends toward sin, we need the objective Truth of the Church to stay out of the gutter. I’m in awe that it’s so easily explained. Father Wiseman is a great teacher and a wise man.

Thank you for writing such a nice testimony! I spent a few years in Protestantism going through 5 different denominations/ministries each with different teachings and practices. I felt something not quite right and saw issues with members making me question whether the Holy Ghost was present. In seeking Christ for help, I was quickly led to the Roman Catholic Church after which I learned about the problems of Vatican II which prompted me to leave the Novus Ordo to follow the traditional Catholic faith. After a time I decided to follow the SSPX and now at peace going to their Chapels. SSPX Priests I've encountered are of a very high standard (truly dedicated to saving souls) and from personal experience better than Fraternity of Saint Peter and Institute of Christ the King.

Nominalism is alive and well today. Not only can one define their own gender and force everyone else to recognize that as reality, we must all comply with the declared program and agenda and recognize the reality of the narrative regarding all things public health. In fact, even when the given orthodoxy changes and the dictates and whims of given health czars contradict themselves, it doesn’t matter; there is no past; there is no reason or objective standard of truth; there is only a perpetual present where the Party is always right.

This is a wonderful series! I didn't realize that these ideas had happened so early in our history. This is where this idea of gender fluid and how you feel what you are has come from. The more they are allowed to believe this way, the harder it is to bring the World back to Christ. God Bless the SSPX! Thank you for all that you do to provide for your faithful and help teach the TRUTH!

Thank you for this series. As a heretic and recovering Catholic, it really helps me understand the differences between my views and the orthodox Catholic doctrines. I can start clarifying where and how my alternative views were mistaken. (I grew up in Novus Ordo culture, dad involved with ministry and charismatic movement, hosted in our home for long periods Protestants, and I read the history of philosophy and also um, telepathically communicated with spirits. I first ended up choosing agnosticism to avoid full-blown schizophrenia 😂 and my story doesn't even end there. Prior to my return to Catholicism my favorite spiritual paradigm explains spiritual reality in scientific terms. My playlist "My Heart of Hearts" shows some snippets of it. I returned home because I recognize the value of the sacrament of Reconciliation.)

Listened to a lecture given by a respected, well known Catholic Priest who teaches in seminaries and has a German background and I think able to read German. Most books on Luther are in German and not available in English. From the Priest's studies on Luther he stated Luther murdered his friend and then fled into the Catholic monastery in order to not be caught and arrested. This may be the true reason for his anxiety and scrupulosity. He entered the monastery for the wrong reason therefore never had a calling from God to be a monk let alone Priest.

Commenting on "My Religious Experience" explanation, my thoughts went immediately to Pilate, responding to Christ, saying "What is truth?" when he was standing before Truth Incarnate. Like in today's world, everyone had "their own truth" or should I say, their own version of truth. Touchy feely-ism.

I LOVE this so much! It is truly an answer to prayer, I have been asking God why do people make everything subjective? Why can’t we have discussions of abstract ideas and come to objective conclusions? I came into the Church because I was told there was incontrovertible doctrinal and traditional Truth and a magisterial authority to protect it. But, Catholics have as many different religions as there are people just like all the other religions I’ve tried. This helps so much, I guess being raised without religion or philosophy was actually a blessing. God bless you, I am loving this series much more than I had expected, frankly I have despaired of ever getting beyond feelings and the fad belief of the moment to a discussion of objective truth and objective reality, without which we are just floating on separate rafts in an infinite sea.

Dear Andrew, Oh, Father! To be honest, the Protestantism I have experienced wouldn't even consider the idea of being saved or not being saved because there is nothing to be saved from! In the local Church of England church services we have known before being SSPX Catholics, there was no mention of sin or of Hell or of being saved but they did sing 'By Faith Alone', and the vicar told jokes in sermons about meeting "Peter at the Pearly Gates" but, I can't remember the joke. The vicar also on arrival at his new post in the hamlet here, made jokes in his maiden sermon about the word Repent. Basically, they make fun of the words: Hell, sin, evil and repentance. They truly believe that they are already 100% saved, simply because they believe that Jesus is God. I used to cry, especially as I walked home after a 'service'. Praise God He lead us to the great SSPX! Praise God. We have catechism instruction at the SSPX Priory at Preston given by Father H. It is so glorious to become a true Catholic and learn to be a better Catholic than we are today. Praise God! Thank you, God! Mrs Darley SSPX choir Manchester UK

Fr. Wiseman makes me wonder whether Luther agreed with Calvin when Calvin taught that after someone accepts Christ as his Lord and Savior, no matter what sin he commits, he'll still go to heaven. The idea seems to me that since salvation is a gift, you can't earn it. Since you can't earn it. you can't lose it. You can't even say, "Lord Jesus, thank you for the present. But I don't want it." Some people commit what philosophers call the "no true Scotsman fallacy." They'll try to explain away evidence against what they believe. For example, after I accept Christ, someone might say that a real Christian wouldn't do anything like that. So I might think, "Oh, no, I accepted Christ, but he didn't accept me. I better accept him again." The once-saved-always-saved doctrine prevents the certainty it's meant to give a Christian.

Interesting. It’s a different read of the words of Paul. Is there an SSPX guide - or a recommended commentary - to the Epistle? License to sin is insanity. I recall the quote, but Luther was not a proponent of that kind of hyper-Grace in his writings. I wonder if that was a hyperbolic statement as his theology evolved. There are Word Faith heretics to this day who ascribe to hyper-grace, but they trace their new age theology, wrapped in Christian lingo, more to E.W. Kenyon via Hagin. They’re out there, alone.

The Church also did NOT want to go after Frederick the Wise. They wanted to make a hard example of a nobody-monk, in order to shut down criticism on Tetzel and his notorious abuse of indulgence selling. Frederic the Wise had some wealth, influence and land, and he also had a big mouth. It was Luther’s bad luck that the printing press was around. Someone saw his thesis, printed and distributed them. Had that not happened, I wonder if Hus would have had a strong follow-up in Luther, or someone else. Providence was in full force.

I once heard a Protestant pastor say, "I didn't trade in the Pope on Martin Luther. I traded in the Pope on the Bible.' It would be interesting to hear Sola Scriptura (the Bible as the only infallible rule of faith) connected to modernism. Perhaps via Calvin, to sidestep Luther's personal quirks.

Pope Pius X, the society’s patron saint, isn’t written as “Pius the Tenth”. So “SSPtenth”or “SSP10” or “SSP10th” as an acronym for their fraternity doesn’t really work very well. It also doesn’t roll off the tongue as nicely as “SSPX”. Plus, going from 10 syllables in “Society of St. Pius the Tenth” to 4 in “SSPX” is quite easier when speaking. 😉

Resuming everything: Luther thought that what matters is not what God handed us as truth, but what he, Luther, thinks God handed us. It's like you trying to explain to a toddler that if he gets close to the oven he might get burn. The toddler screams, NO! It's warm! Warm is cozzy! I will stick my hand in there. Then you patiently explains that you are right, objectively right, and that if he puts his hands in there he will get burnt. Then he thinks, what do YOU know? And puts his hands in there and it does get burn. So he relied not on the truth you were speaking, but on what he thought was right. Same as Eve when she ate that apple. God told her she shouldn't. She did it anyway because she thought she knew better. See? It's a sin of disobedicence at its core. Their explanation was to try to show how someone can be as petulant as that toddler and still think they are right, despite not being a toddler anymore... and before they get their hands burnt.
