In 1995 six monks were sent to the Sonoran Desert to establish a new monastery; St. Anthony's emerged out of the desert. Most of the resident monks are Greek and Greek-American. The produce grown on the grounds provide healthy food for the resident monks.

I heard a story about this place: When the land was donated and Elder Ephrem first arrived, there was no water. He told those with him to leave him there for 3 days, then come back. They did. He then instructed them to dig a well at a place he showed them. They dug almost as far as the machine could go. They said to the Holy Elder, "Geronda (Greek for Elder), it is a desert, we will not find any water." But the Holy Elder just told them to have faith and continue digging. At the very end of the machine's reach, they burst into an underground river! This is why, in the middle of the Sonoran desert, this Oasis-both of the body and of the soul-exists. Elder Ephrem will be canonized as a Saint very soon and founded almost 20 other Monasteries in North America. May his Memory be Eternal. Holy Saint Ephrem, pray to God for us sinners! It is a pinnacle moment of my life to receive his blessing in 2014. I hope to get back to St. Anthony's this winter, possibly for Geronda's glorification.

No thank you. I agree with a priest I know. So much money being put into American monasteries. They live like kings and queens compared to the homeless that we are to take care of. Also, not everything Fr. Ephraim did was right in guiding some he was a spiritual father too.

This is exactly what Judas said “why don’t we sell that perfume and give the money to the poor” this beautifully place has been built with the hands of many monks and hard working man. In this country every person has the freedom to do whatever they want. People on the streets uses our tax money; these monks uses people’s charities. God is found in: beauty, goodness and truth. This place has all three. Blessings brother

Gee, I thought "the poor you will always have with you," and it is good to pour the richest ointment out upon the Lord. hmmm. In the USA, the only "poor"are those who choose drugs/mental illness over shelter and order. There is shelter and food for everyone, but you have to volunteer the most minimal kind of submission: not doing drugs/booze, taking mental illness meds if prescribed, going into job training if able, etc. Those who won't or can't are the "homeless."
