The St Croix Panfish Series Ultralight Rod is one of the most popular ultralight sticks out there! I have had tons of recommendations to pick this thing up over the years so I finally did it. In today's video, I fish with it and break down my first impressions / honest review of this rod.

Overall, I do think this rod will have a purpose. It is definitely a nice rod and feels comfortable in the hand. That being said, I can't say it is exactly what I am personally looking for. It is a bit tip-heavy for my liking and it also has a little more "whip" to the tip than I would prefer. Ultimately, we have to remember that personal preference is a huge part of gear selection so that doesn't mean this is a bad rod - it is simply not what I prefer.
I do, however, think this will be an excellent crappie stick. I plan to fish crappie with it in the future and put it to the test. Because they have "paper mouths", the softer tip on this rod may allow for a harder hookset without ripping the jig free from their mouth. Time will tell :)

I have this rod in 1 piece UL 6’ and it’s absolutely my favorite rod. Caught everything from dinks to 6lb peacock bass on it. Very sensitive and cast great. Only minor complaint is with the micro guides. I do get line wrapping on the tip if not diligent. Waiting for the day when I forget and decent fish breaks it off. Overall a great multi species rod for my purposes down here in South Florida.

I think if I would have got the 6' model, I would have liked the rod more. I have a feeling it is a bit less whippy than this one so it would probably fit my style better. Regardless, there is no doubt in my mind this is a nice rod. I will definitely be fishing it more in the future!

Im glad you said "Bass sitting in 2 inches of water" because I just caught my biggest Largemouth out of Lake Mead this past friday on the 1/16th black mule jig with the Spark Shad in what seemed like 2 inches of water. Later on, caught my biggest bluegill on that setup too. Mule Jigs haul the chunks 🤘

Also, I caught my person best gar today, 4ft! Didn’t have a scale though. One of the best fights I ever had. I seriously thought I had a snag until I saw my rod tip move to the right. Took me about 15 mins to bring it in. Caught it on a 4 inch Ozark Trail jerk bait (blue on top / white on bottom). It was hooked just right so the line wasn’t in its mouth. The rod and reel I used was my Quantum Throttle II, 6.6ft. It’s my favorite combo.

Your description of this rod's feel and characteristics seems close to the Okuma Celilo that you also reviewed. The St. Croix is a beautiful rod, add maybe one I will consider if I decide to stay with ultralight long-term. Your random musings ( "...how did I feel THAT bite?") spoke volumes about the sensitivity of the St. Croix. Thanks for a great video.

I think you and I have pretty similar preferences in how our gear balances in our hand. You seem to gravitate towards longer rods than I do but all in all, I think we have similar preferences. It is all about personal preference at the end of the day. I don't think this is a bad rod - I just think it has a different feel than I personally like. I will keep fishing it and maybe I will learn to appreciate a tip heavy rod. Who knows!

Good timing. I broke my old (2012) St. Croix Avid a few weeks ago. A very sad moment. But lifetime warranty baby! I was asked to call St. Croix tomorrow to discuss replacement options. A nice little discount on a new rod would work for me. I'm considering the Legend Elite Panfish or the Avid ultra light. I also have the Legend Tournament Bass casting rod. Maybe St. Croix is an acquired taste but I always liked how they both felt and not a lot of experience to compare it with others.

Bought the same canoe last weekend. Super nice and easy to throw around. 56 pounds is the weight. But to St Croix, they get a lot, and I mean a lot of fanfare, and they are super solid rods, but I’ve seen the same thing as you. They are very top heavy, even their Panfish series. Sold all of em and went to TFO - Trout and Panfish series. The Phenix rods are legit too if you want to open the wallet for em.

Excellent video! I was a little disappointed with my St Croix to be honest. Like you, I prefer a good balance with a fast or extra fast action, and its just a bit too soft. I know this is an old review but it's a 6'9" rod! You're not going to have a well balanced 7' (close to) rod with ultralight setups. You should review the St. Croix Panfish series with a proper length like the 6'. The other rods you rave about are much shorter length than this one, I believe you'd have a different opinion if you compared apples to apples.
@FishAnything

That’s fair feedback! That being said, the Phenix Elixir has been tested at a 7’6 length and it balanced properly with a size 1000 reel. Ultimately rod manufacturers need to create optimal balance no matter what the length. A 6’9 ultralight doesn’t call for a 2500 size reel, so why make it so tip heavy?

How would you compare this to your temple fork ultralight?

Pretty similar but I like the balance of the TFO a bit more

I was wondering because I am new to fishing with jig head weights. Can I throw a 1/16 oz jig head on this rod or is that to heavy for it.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely throw a 1/16oz jig. Take a look at the ratings on your rod blank and keep your weights in that general range.

Fluorocarbon less than 6lb test has given me more problems than mono. It seems to be very brittle in low-diameter sizes. The mono is much more forgiving!

@@FishAnything Of course. I love my 5"4" UL. I usually opt for shorter rods but I notice most people go with the longer variations. The premier series ultra light is another Id like to try. I have the 5'6" light action and 6' ML and they are both incredible. Such a great feel and I love how they balance. I prefer less weight in the handle.

I definitely do not like tip-heavy rods. After an all-day fishing trip, your wrist and forearm are sore and exhausted.

Yeah and for me, I feel like I actually detect bites better when the rod tip is lighter. Could be all in my head but we all have preferences with our gear. No right or wrong answer - just what works best for you individually!
