@@remf4519 , Napoleon was really first exiled in Elba, which they thought would be remote enough for the early 19th century, but they were wrong. Napoleon managed to escape, gather an army and fight the British until finally defeated again at Waterloo (in today's Belgium, not far from Brussels).This time the British would take no chances and decided to send him to a place so far and remote it would be impossible for him to escape to Europe again. That's why they sent him to Saint Helena. This time it worked --- Napoleon lived 6 years on the island and died there. You can visit his grave there, though it's empty now, as his body was exhumed and sent to France some years later.

People on the island need job security and good tourism prospects with appropriate aircraft suited to this airport. Many runways around the world are challenging; they utilise STOL aircraft designed for these conditions.
@cageordie
@cageordie 6 жыл бұрын
Which STOL aircraft were you thinking of that can make it out there with the fuel reserves to also make it back if landing is not possible? The nearest other runway is Wideawake at Ascension Island, which is around 800 miles and not open to non-military flights. Other than that you need to make it to Namibia, 1150 miles, with reserves for stooging around while you make your mind up. So you need something like 3000 miles range, with payload.

A STOL aircraft is designed for short runways. That isn’t the case here. It’s a very long runway capable of handling the largest military aircraft. As others have said, have a look on a map as to where this airport is and you’ll understand why a 737 is used.

@Shrike200
@Shrike200 8 жыл бұрын
+ZS2YCL The 'flapping wings' look is typical of the 737-800, they're a lot more flexible (by design) than the older 737-400's etc. The simulator engineers at Comair (the company flying the BA franchised aircraft to St. Helena) have created a very accurate replica of St. Helena for the companies flight simulator (down to actually seeing seats in the terminal building when you park there!), so the pilots fly many approaches in the 'virtual' world first under various conditions (I'll just say that it's an eye-opener, you need to be on the numbers there). The performance specialists calculate the usual figures for thrust settings, weights, V speeds etc based on Boeing performance data and the known airfield parameters prior to the start of operations to the field.

Embraer 190. Brazilian technology at the service of the world! Yes, we invented the plane and now we are opening new routes where the first world technologies have failed! Proud to be Brazilian!!!
@lemao_squash4486
@lemao_squash4486 6 жыл бұрын
Leandro Muniz no. You didn't invent it. The only thing that you and Embraer share is that both were born in Brazil. Embraer doesn't even engineer in Brazil
@munizmago
@munizmago 6 жыл бұрын
Urho The Human In a globalized world, it is practically impossible to have a company in which its engineering is 100% national. The important thing is that Embraer is Brazilian and takes the name of the country in its name and airplane models. After this, the South African company commissioned several E195 models that will be manufactured in Brazil, generating income and jobs. More than that, the aerodynamic design of the E195 was produced by Brazilian engineers ...

Leandro Muniz what a logical and well thought out argument, i must say. And agree. But they only use the E140 just because the 37 is too big for them.

Timothy Cook Clay Kemper I’d be very surprised if it was Johannesburg, a 737 would struggle to go 6000km😬 Unless it had almost no passengers or luggage. Particularly with an airport no plane had ever landed at and notoriously unpredictable winds in the south Atlantic.😳😳 Maybe Cape Town, Walvis Bay or Windhoek Namibia I’d have thought.
@timothycook2917
@timothycook2917 5 жыл бұрын
@@numbersix100 Yes it was Johannesburg, approx. 4900 km. Cape Town is only about 500 km. closer. Besides, 737-800's routinely fly between Newark, New Jersey and London, England, 5775 km.
@numbersix100
@numbersix100 5 жыл бұрын
Timothy Cook I see they have a weekly service now from Johannesburg to Saint Helena, it stops at Windhoek (Namibia), fills the tanks then to Saint Helena. The aircraft is an E190 which makes sense and only lands on 02 runway to get round the wind sheer problem.
