Oh that's awesome! I'm so happy to be able to play a tiny part in that! Was this a made-for-TV movie, or did it have some sort of release? I've lived in the PNW for 25 years, but I didn't grow up here, so I don't have any local memories of this era.

@@DrRIPVHS so I'm assuming made-for-tv movies were released on video cassette?.. I guess I thought only theatre-productions go to video.... however, now that I think about it, the phrase, "it went straight to video..." comes to mind!🤣 My deadline for moving to PNW is 2 years, no later. One of the locations I've been kinda moving towards (at least to start out) is just north of Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA. This video helps me stay motivated and "dialed-in." 🙏🙏

I watched St. Helens blow up from back porch. To this day, my parents can still walk down in the field and look at the new lava dome growing up behind the old one. They did a pretty good job making this movie! They used a lot of real footage from the eruption....ie: pyroclastic flow, lahars, etc.
@DrRIPVHS
@DrRIPVHS 2 жыл бұрын
I was a kid down in Southern California when it erupted, but my entire extended family was from the PNW. I remember my grandpa sending jars of ash, and soap made from ash, and _______ made from ash 😄 But during the last 25 years that I've lived in the PNW, I've been able to fully appreciate the magnitude of something like that. And I also learned about pyroclastic flow from St. Helens. For some reason that factoid has stuck since I was a kid. Didn't that help the understanding of what happened in Pompeii? For some reason I remember hearing that so many of the accounts of Pompeii described pyroclastic flow, but until then most of the modern observed volcanoes had been more of the traditional lava-type. Maybe I'm making that all up, but for some reason I thought I heard that somewhere.

@@DrRIPVHS I will never forget it. My dad called his sisters in a different state and said, "if you never hear from us again, Mount Saint Helens just blew up and it's real bad." It took about 10 to 15 minutes for hot ash, thunder and lightning, whirlwinds, and pumice and mud to start falling around my parents home. What I remember is that the ash plume was so big that it blocked out the sun. The sun actually hit the top of the ash plume and I remember the vivid rays of sun getting beamed off the edges of the pyroclastic cloud. My parents had just planted poplar trees, and I remember the blast of heat and the wind that we got hit with first before the ash started falling. The thunder and lightning was violent, the whirlwinds coming off the edge of the ash plume scared us half to death, it blackened out the entire day, and we honestly thought we were going to die. I also remember other eruptions after the big one. I was outside playing on my swing set with my dog and all of a sudden I hear this big kaboom, and as I turned around to look, I noticed that Mount Saint Helens had blown her top again. I couldn't run to the house fast enough. I remember a day after the main eruption, walking across the field to my grandma's house, and by the time I got there I had a horrific nosebleed because of all the sulfur. To get across the field, I had to walk in hot ash that was anywhere from mid calf to stomach high. The reason I am so interested in Mount Saint Helens is not only because I lived through watching the mountain blow up from the back porch, and then from the living room window, but because there has been increased earthquake activity underneath the mountain. Also, according to the usgs, three sisters down in Oregon is rising. It makes me think that there's something brewing again, or the magma chambers are trying to recharge.

@@skittles5347 Wow - thank you for sharing those memories! Those are incredible stories. I have been hearing about the activity around Sisters, and thankfully that looks like it shouldn't be a threat. St. Helens has put on a few shows over the past 20 years as well - which is good because that means it's venting. I think it's the big earthquake that's overdue that worries me more. O_O
@skittles5347
@skittles5347 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrRIPVHS It is my hope that by venting, St Helens can take the pressure off of Baker, Adams, and Rainier. I have a feeling if Rainier were to ever go, depending on which way it blew, it would not be pretty. Where my parents live, they can actually see one of the two humps of Mount Rainier too. I just worry that if Rainier were to ever go, all of Glenoma, Morton, White Pass, Randle, Packwood, and all of Spanaway, Tacoma, Puyallup, etc. would have a huge lahar to deal with. I've even read somewhere that Boeing sits on top of Mount Rainier lahars. It's just amazing how much volcanic activity and seismic activity that we have in the area. However, it is not near as much as what Alaska experiences in earthquake activity. One of these days though.... We are due for a 9.0 Plus. :(

@@skittles5347 In the early 20th century, both Mt. Pelee in Martinique and La Soufriere on St. Vincent began erupting. It was also thought that La Soufriere's eruption would 'relieve the pressure' on Mt. Pelee, but a few weeks after, on May 8, 1902, Mt. Pelee exploded in a devastating eruption which included both pyroclastic clouds and a superheated landslide of steam, gas and combustibles, wiping out 30,000 people in minutes. I also saw a documentary on a hypothetical eruption of Mt. Rainier and the grim predictions you mention were also mentioned.

Late one night at work, years ago, I was Googling old campfire songs and came across a song list from Camp Loowit. When I saw where this was located, I researched more and found out so much about the eruption, the blast and how anything in its direction was wiped out. It's one of those type of things where you know people died and it was complete devastation, but you look anyway. I read about a man who wouldn't leave and died with his cat/cats. It was Harry Truman. Even now, decades later, it's heartbreaking to think of the loss. Human, wildlife and forests.

Something I found out interesting, "David Jackson" in this movie is based on David Johnston, USGS Volcanologist who was sent to Mt St Helens and died in the eruption. In this movie, David Jackson developed a love interest and sometimes acted like a jerk. The family of David Johnston tried to sue the producers because, according to them, David Johnston did not have any girlfriend while there and was a really nice guy. They tried to sue the producers for portraying David Johnston in a negative light.

Wow what a great film.. I've always watched documentaries about mt st Helens.. but never got a chance to see an actual film about it.. what a good film.. I'm just sad that one of my favorite honeymooners art Carney had to play Mr Harry Truman.. What a tough old man he was.. it's like he knew all his best years were behind him. He buried his wife and daughter on that property he owned. Plus he had tons of animal who depended on him.. If I were in his shoes at that time I would've done the same and stood my ground.. he was done being alone.. he wanted to see his wife and daughter again..😢 What I would've done differently if I were him. I would've gotten all of my animals to somewhere safe so at least they can have a chance at life and not keep em their to suffer those terrifying moments which I'm sure sounded like the end of the world . If you haven't seen it.. check it out.. its a great film. R,I,P Mr. Harry Truman Of MT ST Helen's..

I loved this movie growing up in 80s. I was 10 when this came out. This flick has a star studded cast. Art Carney, David Huffman (killed about 5 years later by a kid from Mexico in country illegally), Tim Thomerson, Cassie Yates, and others. All great actors from that time. Makes me want to visit the Bend Oregon area where filmed then shoot up to Washington. Great movie, one of my favorites from that time.

They had to remove the "Johnston" and dubbed it over with "David Jackson" because David Johnston's parents sued producers of the movie for misportraying their son as a wreckless rebel, instead of the super cautious scientist he really was. They had to change the name as a result of the lawsuit.

I was hoping this would be a serious and well researched biopic about the last weeks/days of the legendary Harry Truman, but there was so much other garbage thrown in, it just felt like a bad tv soap opera. Still waiting for a really good dramatisation that honours and pays respect to the personal stories of that tragedy.
