Saint John of the Cross (Spanish: San Juan de la Cruz; 1542 - 14 December 1591) was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest who was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile. John of the Cross was a reformer in the Carmelite Order of his time and the movement he helped initiate, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, eventually led to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites, though neither he nor Teresa were alive when the two orders separated. He is also known for his writings. Both his poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature and one of the peaks of all Spanish literature. He was canonized as a saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He is one of the thirty-six Doctors of the Church.

A fine commentary Huysmans described st Theresa as the wrought iron and St John as the lily of Torture, returning to it now it all makes sense, but the path to the same place is different for each sinner surprisingly fresh of today if you are coming from and leaving philosophy but that is a wooden comparison only. God grant me the Time. The decorum of the orator is highly distinctive in his awed diction. Excellent.

St John of the Cross: Detachment enables us to be unflappable. When something is going wrong with their attachments they start to flap. Live in the world as if only you and God were in it In joys and pleasure immediately draw near to God and you will discover detachment Early find the words “I” “me” Didn’t talk about himself. Didn’t promote himself. Didn’t put himself on stage. Always had gentle behavior. *Humility and detachment is most essential* Heroically patient and gentle with all those who God sent them

Thanks be to God for St. John of the Cross teaching us about detachment. I was glad to apply this to the advertisement preceeding the video which promotes Islam. It may be tempting for devout Catholics to react adversely to such an advertisement in advance of a video pertaining to Catholic piety, but, by applying St. John of the Cross' spirit of detachment, I am free of frustration and only prompted to pity and prayer for Muslims especially, and all non-Christians. Alleluia!

Drawing from your comment, on one hand, God's grace has primacy in initiating and sustaining all life and existence in Heaven and Earth. In turn, with this grace entrusted to us, mortals are empowered to cooperate freely with it. Hence, God's when you to choose freely to exercise the spirit of detachment the above-mentioned example and many other things. Having said that, individuals spiritual qualities and capacities. As a result, they can each struggle or succeed spiritually in different ways. They all depend on grace and have the potential to act in different ways.

Could someone please explain the difference between detachment and Gnosticism?
@franciscosantana6355
@franciscosantana6355 5 жыл бұрын
I can hardly believe 7 months have passed and no one has responded to this. Simply put, gnosticism was more of a philosophical worldview, and held religious pessimism. It looked at he created universe as corrupt, Detachment does not look at good things in a negative way. Detachment forgoes the good things of this life, for union with God. The detached person seeks the greatest good, and renounces even good distractions in favor of it. It's kind of like a person who is trying to eat healthy, and decides to eat an apple as a snack instead of a bag of chips. Both fill the belly, but one is much better for you.

The detachment in his teachings is about not throwing ourselves in euphoric and ecstasy in the presence of God. A spiritual sins, such as sloth because believe that God will work everything for us. Pride, because God favored us with many blessings that was occurred around us. The devil at works and keeping us at the first step, instead of believing that we're always inside the presence and love of God.

The 2 have nothing to do with other: not merely apples and oranges, but as different as pork chops and oranges. 1) Gnosticism: autonomous knowledge; detachment: detachment from worldly things, surrender of our will to Our Fathers Will, true humility, etc.

The definition needed doctoring He wasn't detached from the truth nor the depth of his identity. How did this man make his mark on history, by making it wholly apparent how true the statement, "That man was wholly here." Brings to cognition, (our first born) Transcendence as the epitome of being here, present on all levels.

Interesting. This world is passing and no one denies that. The laity must work in order to pay their bills and eat. No one denies that. Some can barely fulfill the requirements of the Faith while so many fall short not only in not going to Mass BUT and because of the New Mass and the Traditional Mass that are in conflict as are so many of the Priests claiming they are knowledgeable of the way. No one denies that though for a cause many will look the other way of extricate others for lack of it happening their way. That too no one denies in this sphere. So, what kind of detachment is being stated here? Does the Person talking really understand what they are saying to so many? Or is it the intent to have us contemplate this? Oh Lord, I am short on understanding and this as it sounds is so confusing. While I appreciate the message of detachment it sounds more like the definition of apathy or immobility which is caused by doubt and confusion. Detachment in spirit, then how can the needs of life, of the body, even follow what little they now have? Most learn early to live it their way because true guidance is lacking! To live each day with you my Lord and God: In thought, in feelings, in actions, living my life as though I am before you always, even though I am unworthy and accept that I do not see you. Mines is attachment which sounds here like detachment. So, what is it that this Saint, John of the Cross is saying?

He was considered to be a saint only for those in religious orders or religious life and of a mature spirituality. It is not for the average lay Catholic. His writings are very hard to understand. His writings were considered to be very difficult and he was one of the most difficult saints to understand. Perhaps he had a specific calling for his time that we are not meant to emulate.
@arapaimagold8088
@arapaimagold8088 4 жыл бұрын
Not that hard if you read his writings slowly and not rushing to the end of the book. He's teaching us detachment from euphoria and ecstasy in the presence of God. Such as, people go to the mass only because they want to feel the presence of God in Holy Communion. And indulge themselves in that sensation. Which is a devil at works, because it will preventing us from taking another steps toward God. He teach us that we're always in the love of God and there's no need for us to keep seeking confirmation and indulge ourselves in the sensations of being visited by God. In the part of spiritual sins, he teach us what mistakes that beginners do. In modern knowledge, it's about happy because of hormones instead of rejoice by spirit.

As Jesus so simply and subtlety played with the universes born and burning in The transcendence dancing on the top of the tongue, language and its marriage to the voice, "Do not be of this world but, be in it." ... Or Close, my apology for potential misquote, But you get the idea... So as your confusion rightly demands of your correct awareness, detached is a truth that falls on either side of the coin... Saints have their detachments... Our mothers have their own. Dissect and add as needed to correspond to your truth, for US!

You don't have Jesus Christ with anything but the Catholic Church. His own words point to *Him* as the Way, Truth, and Life, and He gives the power of binding and loosing only to the apostles and their direct successors along the apostolic line. Any other way is a deception. Christ's own words are clear on this.
