In 1979 I worked on an ocean-going cargo-ship which travelled from Montreal up to chicago, calumet harbor. One week sight-seeing while passing lots of smaller and larger cities - montreal, quebec, Detroit and others. We loaded some steel and then another week of sight-seeing going back to the Atlantic. Very impressive !!

It's amazing that the Seaway only cost about 350 million British pounds sterling, or less than $600 million U.S. dollars to construct in the 1950's. Today it would probably cast over 600 billion dollars and take ten times longer to build.
