I have been watching your videos and it is great that there are beautiful areas in NB. I understand your reasons for moving to Saint John, however all the videos that are now being posted on KZfaq are focusing more on the cheap house prices in NB not whether the cities in NB are livable. I live in Alberta and I am currently looking for a retirement place outside of Alberta. House prices are not such a concern to me (except for Toronto and Vancouver) but I am looking more of a lifestyle change. I am enjoying the city tours and it gives me a better idea about the areas in Saint John. Thanks!

Thank you for your comment. Throughout our videos, we do talk about the lifestyle in Saint John as we see it, and in our reason for moving here video we specifically mention that cheap house prices were not enough on their own to convince us to move. We also wanted a lifestyle change and to embrace the Maritime culture. To answer your question without more details requires the use of vague and all encompassing stereotypes that in no way apply to the entirety of a population, so forgive me. When I think of Alberta (Wendy lived in Calgary for 10 years), I think of a fairly transient population, there to make a lot of money, drive big pickup trucks and buy a lot of stuff. I think of blue collar people with very conservative ideals believing they are living the Canadian dream. In the Maritimes, and Saint John specifically, I see a slightly blue collar group of people, far more liberal minded in that they have a broader sense of community, and far less concerned about material possessions, far more concerned about their neighbours and living their lives. I think living in a place like this, which has never really been prosperous, has reshaped people's ideals of what truly matters in life, and is helped by being in an area with so much natural beauty that possessions are not as important in the search for happiness. There is not the same type of busyness here. The lifestyle is slower paced, more time is spent being social and being in touch with nature, family and community. Obviously, there are problems here like everywhere else, alcoholism is fairly prevalent, but not so much drug use. There is crime but more of the petty variety, not the type we used to see in BC. It is very hard to explain lifestyle because it means something different to each person, but the best way I can explain it for us, is it gave us the opportunity to exhale. We could feel ourselves losing that everyday tension from our bodies that came from decades of crime, congestion, and people trying to prove they were better than everyone else. We never feel the need to look over our shoulder or to worry what someone else thinks of us, or if we have enough stuff. We live our life doing the things we want to do, and we chat with friendly people living theirs. If you want more specific answers, please ask us specific questions and we will do our best to answer them. Hope this helped a little.

@@WeLoveSaintJohn Hi Les and Wendy, thank you for your response. I don't disagree with your assessment of Alberta but you forgot the luxury vehicles, haha. I moved here 30 years ago from Toronto (originally from Montreal) and I never regretted leaving Toronto (too expensive and too busy) and I did move here for the career opportunities but never bought into the consumerism lifestyle. Lived in Calgary for 12 years and the lifestyle in Calgary is very much like you describe experiencing in BC.Currently I live in St. Albert (outside of Edmonton) and it is more laid back than in Calgary but we are looking for a change (tired of the conservative politics and the long winters). So I do agree that lifestyle means different things to each person. We plan to visit after the pandemic to get an idea of NB as a whole, however your videos are very helpful. I do have a friend living here that is from NB, so I am doing a lot of research as my next move will be my last. Thanks again, Diana

OMG so lovely to see St Martin's again! The last time I was there was with my parents when my father (who was a painter in Saint John) painted the catholic church in St Martin's and we stayed at a cottage situated on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Funday for a week. Thank you so much for showing St Martin's through a new lens. A great walk down memory lane. I especially enjoy your perspectives and playful commentaries. 🙂🤗🤗🤗🙂

What a spectacular view. Thank you for sharing. Me and my family planing to move to Saint John NB. it’s a beautiful place to raising kids. My only concern is Irving refinery which is the only ugliest part of the city. If you can give me some suggestions about this that would be great.

@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. My suggestion would be not to worry about the refinery too much (or the pulp mill) but choose to live away from them. Saint John is an industrial port city. That is not going to change. but tourism has caught on here because there is so much natural beauty that brings people into the area. This is not a gingerbread city like Charlottetown that looks all cute in the summer and then rolls up the sidewalks come winter, it is a real working Canadian city, flawed, a little rough around the edges, but hardworking, honest and beautiful. You either accept that or you don't.

@@WeLoveSaintJohn thank you so much for your help. Which part of Saint John is good for living with kids?

@@sninteriordesignhomestagin1456 I would stay away from the North end but pretty much anywhere else is good. Fundy Heights is always the area we suggest to people who ask. It's quiet, very safe, friendly and near the ocean. It's also away from the pulp mill and refinery.

It is so nice to see that beach with the caves in St. Martins and the entire area is awesome. I must warn you, if you go walking when it is high tide around that corner past the caves for a while, when you come back the tide is higher. One time I was forced to climb on part of a cliff because the tide was in far and I was climbing on a cliff with lots of beautiful green plants and flower bushes. Later that night when I was home, I noticed small little red spots all over my arms and legs. Then I started getting super itchy! Really itchy and I had red spots and hives all over my body from head to toe! The green plants that I was climbing in were poison ivy or poison oak and I had no idea. The itching was brutal and I mean brutal. I went to a doctor and got a prescription medication that cleared up my itching problem and hives and it took about 3 days. If I did not take the medication the doctor said it would take about 5 weeks to clear up. Be careful if you decided to climb on cliffs with beautiful green plants. I liked your video a lot and I hope you find a home for your foster dog.

Thanks, Danny. I got itchy just reading your comment. One day we hope to get around that corner and will definitely avoid climbing any cliffs. I must admit though, that I prefer St. Martins at high tide. There's just something about being up close to the waves crashing in front of me that I find so peaceful.
