The Irish were looked down upon by American society. The only jobs they could get were policeman, fireman, sanitation workers, and soldier/sailors. The Irish built the Erie Canal, cleared the reclaimed land in the bayous, died in the thousands building the railroads across this country, and serving in teh US Cavalry fighting native americans. The Irish, the Scottish, and the Chinese. Their lives were of no consequence. How far the Irish have come. Unrelated, but interesting, as those British that settle in Northern Ireland are dying that population is now more Catholics than Protestants. Count on a vote for reunification in the future.
