What's your favorite architect of St Peter's Basilica?

I am so grateful to those who make the effort required to produce quality videos like this. I have been unable to travel for almost 20 years, yet I do not feel that I am missing out. A video like this allows me the opportunity to see what otherwise would be a closed book to me. Thank you Manuel.

This helped explained to me what felt odd about the facade, and the way the dome is almost hidden. Despite the flaws it is still spectacular

One can't comprehend how vast is the space until you're in St. Peter's. It accomplishes the task of putting you in AWE. Of making you feel small. The letters in the frieze lining the top of the nave and round the dome may look just readable when you're down there but they are enormous! The statues look the right proportion at a distance, but again, when you come closer, you realize how big they are. Amazing building, whatever your religion is. A must see.

This is the best architectural history video I have ever watched. You combine information of many kinds, about architecture but also about the individuals and their differing visions, and combine it with excellent visuals. The pace is just right: fast and packed with information that keeps your interest, but not too fast. I have visited St Peters and I have watched other videos, but today I learned many significant things I had never known before. Probably the most interesting is the fact that there are imperfections in the design and execution, clearly apparent once you point them out. So St Peter's is a magnificent achievement, but there is indeed room for it to be surpassed one day by something else.

The best thing that ever happened to me is that i had the chance to visit Vatican city and see the St Peter's basilica. ❤

This was so informative! The extension of the nave obscuring the view of the dome, the symmetry of the plaza & obelisk to the basilica & tomb, Mussolini's extension of the street providing a needed perspective. Fascinating!

I have visited The Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica a few times. It really is an amazing building. Larger than life and full of beauty. Everyone visiting spends their time looking up to the ceiling in amazement. It really is that big.

Amazing explanation. One guide to the basilica once said that St Peter's is more of a monument to the papacy, than a traditional church, and I tend to agree. Even with its flaws, it transports that idea of the pope's power very well. That detail about Raffaello's School of Athens being inspired by the unfinished basilica was new to me. Great video. :)

Excellent video. The succession of architectural plans explains some of the quirks of the complex of buildings; I had not known of the changes in the planning from Greek to Latin cross prior to viewing this. I wonder what the building would have looked like if the Greek cross design had been retained!

Gosh! I visited the Basilica of St. Peter back in 2019 and would have loved to have seen this video before visiting. Still, being there in person was a wonderful experience, made even richer now that I better understand everything I saw. Thank you for posting!

This is the best video on the subject I have seen. It explains so much and reveals things I’ve never really thought of. Of special significance, for me, is the fact that it is not possible to actually see the full dome and facade of the church without doing so at a distance. The artistry, engineering, and vision of the architects is just breathtaking in this magnificent structure.

My mother was so facinated with this church, so we went there three times during three years to explore everything. The dome is absolutely stunning. And all the marble floors, all the pillars, it's all an amazing piece of craftsmanship.

I am not the least religious, much less Catholic, but I consider myself fortunate to have visited this magnificent structure twice. I spent hours examining the interior, the Vatican museum, the Sistine Chapel and the exterior procession and obelisk. The amount of effort and thinking and money that must have gone into this structure are just amazing to consider.

I cannot explain how amazing this video is! Im currently studying architecture conservation in Rome, i've been countless times to the vatican, received many classes about the Basilica on the Basilica, I have searched and watched a fair share of videos, podcasts, read a ton about the different elements within San Pietro, even a full on paper on the Cathedra Petri. Yet this video helped me connect everything and understand way better the architecture, history and art of the Basilica di San Pietro. I had already watched a few of your videos but this one made you my favorite channel 😁. Im exited to see whatever other videos you are working on! I have only one random question that maybe you can help me solve. On the main altar on top of the Catedra Petri within the entablature, more specifically the frieze there are some greek letters. Do you know why or what does it mean?

The name Petrus in Latin derives from the word Petra that means "stone" and from this assonance we can get the meaning of the inscription saying " TV ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM" that thanslated sounds like " You are Peter and over this stone I will build my church....".

I've known of the size of Bernini's Baldacchino for a few years now... but it always awe me when I see or hear that information again. Because in the small town I grew up in Southern Brazil, the church tower was the tallest structure, that could be seen from the whole town, and YET it's a meter shorter than the amazing piece above St. Peter's altar.

I have been there multiple times but it's the very first time I get these info on youtube, thank you Manuel for making these great videos.

i love the objective approach and the admission that architecture of that time, marvelous and awe-inspiring as it is, is not without setbacks

The original necropolis that the old basilica was built over is actually still there. It was uncovered in 1939 along with the tomb of St. Peter. It actually acts as part of the foundation of the Basilica. There is a little known tour that you can take through the necropolis that takes you to a point where you can see the actual tomb and remains of St. Peter.

Me sorprende lo bien que pronuncias cada idioma: cuando hablas inglés eres impecable, cuando hablas italiano lo haces muy bien, y me dejaste atónico al hablár en latin cuando dices "in hoc signo vinces" pues solo los que realmente saben latín pronuncian "uinkes" que es como un romano lo hubiera dicho. Ni siquiera el traductor de Google pronuncia tan acertadamente.

Great information and observations that they don't they teach to us in architecture school! The baldachino columns are thought to us as baroque inflections rather than reproductions of reused interior columns. The facade issue with the dome and how the plan of the courtyard came about were new to me. There is still so much to learn and this video gave me more understanding of the design and even the designers. This man is living up to his name, Bravo!
