Local Minnesota legend credits this story to an exchange between two men, one Irish and one Finnish, wherein the Irishman was teasing the Finnish man for there being no notable Finnish saints. Unable to think of one, the Finnish man simply made one up just to have a comeback. There is a town in Minnesota itself called Finland, where there is even a parade for St. Urho!

I just noticed I never answered.... We drive a giant grasshopper down bay street. My grandfather explanation of Urho is that it was just a joke to make fun of the Irish and to have one more night of partying. I do remember him and my father arguing about Urho as my Grandfather preferred the earlier version with "Tos Rog's" (Those frogs) to the more modern Grasshoppers. The Canada/US border was basically just bush in the 50's so travel back and forth for work in the camps was very normal and it likely spread like wildfire.

Sounds like someone mixed a legend of St. Yrjö? Nothing Finnish about it but the name George has been charged to more Finnish sounding Yrjö, then in U.S. changed into Urho.

Where I live in Canada (Thunder bay) we have been celebrating St Urho for as long (or Longer) then anyone. I maintain that the story originated in the bush camps after the second world war but leave it the Americans to try and take credit..... St. Urho and I have lot in common. We both originated in Virginia, MN( about 2 years apart.), and are Finnish.

So in other words American Finns are celebrating Urho Kekkonen (considering that the holiday was invented in the 1960s 🤣), but wait..didnt Urho Kekkonen stuck us with bloody mandatory Swedish learning so he would get Swedo Finnish votes? 🤣
