To a boy of fifteen HMS St Vincent was a quantum leap into the unknown. St Vincent was a different world to the one a boy normally left. Even using a different language with fore and aft, decks, bulkheads, and words like 'avast heaving, or even 'lower handsomely' and dog watches, without a canine animal in sight. However, the instructors were a dedicated group of Officers, and Chief and Petty Officers, who helped us boys through the year I spent there. The rumors that HMS Ganges, the other boy’s establishment had a harsher routine, made us feel just slightly better, but only just a little.

Great clip. Joined 9th May 1966, a farmers boy who had never been further than 30 miles from home now found myself 500 miles from home. Having crossed from Harbour station Pompey, on the Gosport ferry and seeing the submarines alongside Dolphin I was filled with so much enthusiasm and excitement because I'd joined with submarine service firmly in mind. Eight months later Dolphin for submarine training. Loved every minute of the basic at St. Vincent. Happy memories shipmates.

Amazing. Thanks, David. I joined St Vincent on Nov 23rd 1964 and went into Blake Division. I was 15 years and 4 months old. Became silver bugler and leading junior and left to join Fleet Air Arm at Daedalus. Played Sunset and reveille for the camp during that time and was in band for parades and Guard Commander for passing out. Went to sea on Droxford once and the captain rammed the jetty...remember the Foudroyant from RCY sailing. Climbed the mast one Sunday afternoon and stood on the button - have had vertigo ever since, though I became a pilot. I have many photos if you want to add to this montage. Happy days (most of them) Mike Smitten. ex JEM

Of interest the old Foudroyant is now back to her original name - HMS Trincomalee, fully restored and sitting in Hartlepool, well worth a visit!

The Museum is opened on the Last Friday of each month (during term time of the College): 1000-1200. Also St. Vincent years were from 1927 to 1968, not as stated. Most of these photos come from the archive which belongs to the Association which accepts both Members, offspring of Bos who served there and Associate members. (I was Duncan 540 Class 1962-1963 and just happen to be the Museum Curator!!) So if you have any queries about St. Vincent I will try to answer them for you. (And yes, we did have it easier than Ganges Boys. Quality was the St. Vincent byword, not quantity as was the Ganges way!)

I was ships company there at the tender age of 17, technically a stoker on the HMS Droxford. but living in the mess in St V. Only NAAFI in the mob that served scrumpy 1/- a pint. Short but sweet visit, then up the East coast main line to South Queensferry.

Very interesting, thanks David. Everybody remembers their joining date imprinted in the memory...mine 9.9.68 I walked through those gates again around 6 years ago and intended to look at their museum if it was open....it wasn't. Was wondering if these pictures are from it?.
