If you're a fan of the (admittedly terrific) Starcon 2, make sure to check out Starflight and Starlfight 2. Greg Johnson worked on all 3 games and Star Control 2 was a direct response to Starlight 1. Well, if you end up looking for a way to play physical copies of the games, while I'm not the biggest fan of their business practices, I think that Analogue is still selling the Analogue Duo, for playing both hucard and CD based PC-Engine games, for not much more than an original PC-Engine Duo, or less than an original Duo that's been modded to be region free. Games for the system are rarely cheap, but tend to be very charming.

Actually, to be honest, Phantom 2040 kind of started that trend, so, without it, you have no shows like Zorro: Generation Z, Loonatix: Unleashed, and, most notably, Batman Beyond/Batman of the Future, as Phantom 2040 predated all of those shows. One can also possibly consider James Bond Jr. the impetus for Phantom 2040 and its existence as well. Finally, it is funny that you mentioned Batman, as Mark Hamill also had a recurring character in Phantom 2040 as well.

@@st1ka the GBA Medabots RPG is an amazing, deeply underrated game but please don't expect to figure out what you're doing immediately. you can play it for weeks and still figure out new things about how combat & customization work; it's the kinda game you gotta really dedicate yourself to, like something Japanese kids were meant to obsess over all summer vacation. even all the basics are hard to memorize & keep in mind at all times to really form tactics around them, and there are hidden mechanics too. the GBA game is a remake of 2 on GBC; the game before that was Medarot 1 on the original GB and the third one is Medarot R on PS1. both are translated; 1 shows its age but with a guide (at least look up the medal locations, the game can be really assholey with those) & speed-up feature (emulator or Switch collection if you know Japanese) I got a lot of fun out of it still. R is considered a black sheep of the series in Japan and by some an outright bad game for gameplay balancing reasons (what Japanese user reviewers call "part inflation") but I liked what I played of it & it's the third mainline game (GBC) is being fan-patched right now (2 was skipped cuz of the remake being officially released back in the day) so you can try out the other 3 until that comes out. 1 is flawed but pretty short (especially for an RPG) while the GBA one is a massive commitment but might be my favorite turn-based RPG battle system of all time.

I wonder, is the the PAL version of Phantom cut sceneless, because it's multilingual? OG Phantom was one of my favorite comic series as a kid... Also, great timing for "fall to the cracks", and the, er, visuals. Fun fact, Prince Brandon in Kyrandia "Full Talkies" was voiced by Joe Kucan, who folks might remember as Kane in Command&Conquer. A bit hammy at times.... I recall Firemen being the winner of some coding competition or such. Deserved. Ruff'n Tumble never got console releases, but I recently randomly bumped into a, spiritual sequel, Rad Rodgers. Takes more than a few cues from R&T...

I think the reason why they replaced the cutscenes with simplified synopses in the PAL version of Phantom 2040, was because the PAL version is multilingual. So probably to cut down on space taken up by the 3 different language modes (English, French, and German) They removed the animated cutscenes so the different scripts packed into one version of the game would'nt bloat things out. A solid list of games. Two more to add: _Crusader of Centy_ (or _Soleil_ in Europe) is a Mega Drive / Genesis Zelda-like where the main character gets familiars. Each familiar grants a special ability, and some abilities can be combined. The story, while short, is also a strong point. _Super Hydlide_ is a MSX action RPG that was ported to the Mega Drive / Genesis. Like most other MSX games, you'll need to find a manual for it, as it's complex enough to need one but lacks much in the way of in-game hints. Even with a manual it's not for everyone, but an interesting attempt at a complex action RPG none the less.

Another great selection St1ka. The funny thing is while I do agree and love the Genesis version, the current iterations of Shadowrun are based on the SNES entry and even include Jake Armitage who is the main character of that version. Your character finds him, funnily enough, at the start of the game in a morgue paying homage to that entry. Also, I loved Phantom 2040 except here in the states I think they aired the episodes out of order.

The Firemen 2 Pete & Danny on PS1 is great, it's in Japanese, but with a little effort and patience you can play the whole game. On Snes there is also another very similar firefighter game called Ignition Factor (from Jaleco). Other firefighter games are PS1's Rosco McQueen (from Psygnosis), in 2004 on PS2 there's Firefighter F.D. 18 (by Konami), and on PCs there's a firefighter RTS franchise called Emergency, which has several games.

Great video that delivers as it says in the title. Lots of new games to further investigate. Shoutouts to Phantom 2040; ahead of its time as a show. I like how both versions tried to be faithful to the character design of the show. Shadowrun on Genesis is such a great, open-world RPG, in the truest sense "role-playing". I had no idea what I was in for when I picked that up on sale back in the day. SIlent Debuggers is a game that's always kinda interested me since seeing a short review on it on the short-lived US TV version of "Gamepro". @@st1ka I think you're confusing "retro-looking" with "16 bits". :) The GBA may not have dedicated 3D hardware but "number-of-Ds" is a different metric than "number of bits". Bits represented way more than a 90s console marketing gimmick: number of onscreen colors, resolution, processing speed (well, how fast data can be processed, not how fast the CPU runs), amount of addressable (thus, available) memory, both in terms of RAM and ROM, etc... A 16-bit system cannot do what the GBA can, not without severe concessions (Also worth mentioning the PS1 has a processor running 2x as fast as the GBA (about 1.50-1.75x for the Saturn), but the GBA runs over 5x faster than an SNES - the comparison seems even *more* unfair when comparing it with retro consoles...). Playing devil's advocate though, the GBA sound chip has two 16-bit processors, so I guess you could make a case for that? In the same way the Jaguar with its two 32 bit processors was a "64 bit console", I guess? :P
@st1ka
