Stability Analysis Using Allan Variance & Keysight 53230A Frequency Counter

10 жыл бұрынSee a demonstration of making stability analysis measurement on a clock or oscillator signal using a free MatLab program and a Keysight 53230A Frequency Counter. The Keyisght 53230A is an ideal instrument for this measurement as it offers 20 ps single shot resolution and gap free measurements. Gap free measurements can be made up to 1 million times per second, allowing a large spectrum of noise sources to be characterized.
The free MatLab program "Stability Analyzer 53230A" allows you to plot the Allan Variance and frequency vs time. The example program can be downloaded on Matlab central:

The Microchip 53100A is another good choice to measure frequency stability. The 53100A ADEV spec at t=1s is 5e-15. which is three orders of magnitude better than the 53230A. I'd use the 53230A to measure 1 PPS stability TDEV, TIE, etc.

Great video and program but unfortunately not all of us can afford an expensive environment like MatLab. Will this same program work on Octave? it would be great.

But what is the limitation of the 53230a ? What is the lowest 1s tau measurement possible using this instrument?

You need S/W to record time stamped measurements of 1 PPS time difference measurements (phase) from the 53230A to file. Use Stable32 (free) to post process the phase measurements for the TDEV and TIE analysis which is much more common than ADEV for 1 PPS stability.

But i cant see the noise on the Sine wave!

dacoda666 The 1 Hz sinewave shown is the noise. It was originally modulated with the 10 MHz signal. The software demodulated the noise signal.
