This week I am playing with one of my favorite art supplies, Stabilo Woodies. These 3-in-1 pencils were originally marketing toward children, they are stubby, sturdy, and colorful. Recently they have taken off with mixed media artists and today we will explore the watercolor, colored pencil, and crayon-like properties that make them so versatile.
Stabilo Woodies are opaque, and require no tooth-they will write on glass, wood, metal, ceramic, and even on top of collage glue! I often use them for mark making on top of my mixed media work and then I set them with a spray varnish and seal them with a brush varnish (both acrylic).

I've had these for over a year and I love the 3-in- one abilities. I started introducing them to my granddaughter at 15 months old. She will be two next month and she loves them as much as I do! Thank you for sharing and teaching us your work and techniques!

By far the best Woody demo I've seen on KZfaq. Thank you for clearly showing the smudging methods. I'm trying to find some media that will allow me to create as my arthritis gets worse -- this is priced so much better than paint sticks.

I have loved using the black and white Stabilo pencils for years. I didn't know about the woodies. Thanks! TIP: I ordered the original set of 18 then the 6 pastels. The rest were duplicates. Saved alot of money.

Of course you do not need both full sets! Just options, some folks are not fans of the pastels. :)

Love the Stabilo woodies. I think they are great value for the amount of colour they put out as the core is so thick. Lots of fun using them in my mixed media journal. Thanks for all your great videos!

I have some of the woodies, but didn't realize they had a pastel set. Sooooo, once again, you MADE me spend more money. ;) And I get paint all over my hands, so why not write on em? No messy hands, no fun

I think the pastel colors might be new! but I do not have them and I want them in the worst way for my florals. Why NOT write on your hands! Why NOT buy more art supplies! LOL it's a certain JOY that we are so fortunate to have... many people do not have a passion in life like we do. it's a blessing. xoxoxoxo

I’m sorry Michelle! I think when someone shows you the benefits of an art supply it really makes you have a better concept of how you can use it in your own work. I like sharing products so that people can decide whether or not it’s for them before they buy it. I have bought a lot of things that ultimately did not work the way that I thought they would. For example I recently bought white compressed charcoal thinking that it may be similar to conte crayon and that I could use it for sketching. It’s not at all similar to conte crayon and it was basically a waste of five dollars for me. So I try to help anyway I can to present the properties of an art material so that you can decide for yourself. When I asked the employee at Blick about the compressed charcoal they couldn’t tell me about the properties of it. I’m really glad that the sale is still going on, that’s another nice thing about Joggles they generally leave their sales up for plenty of time for you to take advantage of it, nothing like just over the weekend or for only a few days. And they really do try to have excellent customer service. That’s a really good deal on shipping because they always ship priority mail! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and for letting me know about the additional savings on the shipping!

I bought an set of 18, tried them a bit but felt they had limitations so this tutorial is VERY helpful! I wonder if these would work as a resist in gel printing?

It’s interesting that you should ask that because I was wondering the same thing about gel printing. I will do some exploring and perhaps make another video. I’m glad that you found the tutorial very helpful, I am going to incorporate them more into my work in the next coming weeks and I am going to get the pastels! I don’t have any pastel colors.

Use a craft knife to sharpen your pencils. That's what my art teacher taught us. Great video! I think I will order some right now!!

Thanks KymberlyDawn! I have done that but I find it to be a little challenging. I really like the ease of the sharpener BUT that's a great idea if you do not have one. I am not coordinated and so I FEAR cutting my fingers with the knife, which is the main reason why I avoid that technique!
