Staccato tonguing on clarinet (and/or bass clarinet and/or sax)

Time for some rudiments of single-reed playing. Sure, staccato articulation gets harder with a bigger the reed, but it's the same process regardless! Watch and see.

I know this is unrelated to the video but what is the blue tape that people put on their mouthpieces? People with the bonade ligature typically do this. Why do they have that? Is there anywhere I can find this?

Question: you say to touch the reed in such a way that it stops vibrating, but should there still be air moving through the instrument or should I close it off completely?

Good question. The reed should simply stop vibrating when you touch your tongue to it. You don't need to "squeeze" or "press" the reed closed, and you shouldn't try to. There likely won't be air moving through your instrument because your reed tip will likely be closed anyway. If not, your reed may be too hard.

Hi, i am trying to learn staccato for a long time now and i always have the same problem. The technique itself feels and sounds right, but after 3 or 4 quick staccato tones spit gets into the mouthpiece and it starts to sound spitty/wet. Obviously the contact of the tongue to the mouthpiece transfers spit into the clarinet. Can you help me out? What am i doing wrong?

Tip if the tongue at the top of the T. Say that fast and use it while play.

Tighter mouth and faster air helps me play in the upper octave of a bass clarinet

Also using the alt fingering for high b flat helps a lot for the switch, so you have less of a gap between the notes

For a regular Bb clarinet make sure bottom lip is firm, corners are pushed in and “stab your brain”

Teaching elementary band students for 20 years now and the biggest issue these littles (and I"m assuming most adults) have with articulation is taking full breaths. Exhale before you inhale! Breathe all the way down into the depths of your lungs and don't hold your air.

I would recommend doing some exercises involving half-tongueing, where you place your tongue on the reed without stopping the sound, and then slowly work your way to a full tongue. I would do this with one note, then an easy scale.

Try this: when you tongue don't think "Taaaa" but think "Tooooo." Look in the mirror and say "Taaa Taaa Taaa" and see how your jaw moves. Then say "Tooo Tooo Tooo" and see how it doesn't. That's the ticket to successville
