I was in the Birdland jazz club on the West44 Street in New York tonight, where Stacey Kent had the last set for this season. Was lucky to listen to this song and I cried like crazy, it was magic 🙏 This randition of lyrics with this voice that has started so many mornings in my life, so soft and emptionally rich.. I just couldn’t help my tears.. and Jim Tomlinson was there, such an intimate setting and people were so quiet, in the low shimmer of the candle light, it was beautiful…’for what good is love without loving you… i’ll be dying slowly till the next hello..’ Jacques Brel would appreciate it.. Stacey made this song even more full of sense.. Thank you for this musical experience, wishing you strong health and many concerts for us🙏 They will be in London in March and back to the Birdland in June. I love this translation a lot more than original. In the English version there's no despair and actually the person allows their beloved one to go, because love is not about possession and keeping somebody by your side. Plus Stacey's unique voice brings this song such charm, warmth and comfort, that it's impossible not to fall in love with this song!😌💚🍂

I love the way Stacey's voice blossoms with hope on the first iteration of "but if you stay," actually on the word "stay." Then, late in the song, the voice subsides into loss. The voice becomes an objective correlative of the emotion in the lyrics. What a powerful artistic achievement!
