This week, we visit a 5-room resale HDB in Ang Mo Kio that has been completely transformed. Homeowners Joy and Shyan were particularly inspired from South America, with lots of curvature on the walls and furnishing. The entrance of the home is quite distinct, as they created a cove for more privacy as it was facing a common corridor. The pebble-washed finish at the entrance leads into the cement screed floors for the communal areas, with vinyl flooring used for the bedrooms.
The thing that catches your eye here would be the incredible 5m long kitchen island, which forms an open space for when guests come over (that cement bench helps add more seating space). The uniquely coloured green/blue stained ply-cladding panels behind opens two different entrances to the master bedroom.
For the living area, the balcony can be opened up via the accordion doors to form one seamless space. When closed, it transforms into a cosy space with a ledge by the window for a place to chill and enjoy the unblocked view.
Behind the living room the curved window helps to frame the study along with the pink circular shelving in the study, which also provides another eye-catching feature when viewed from the living.
Special thanks to Joy and Shyan for showing us their lovely home. For more, please visit: / coochieprang

Finally a home that does not feature the commonly seen black, white or beige marble for their kitchen island top but a much rarer and less commonly seen emerald green marble. Totally vibe with the home owner choice of material and color for their home! love it

Thanks for featuring this! Quite a unique design given the one of the most common 80s unit layout for corridor units yet not commonly renovated this way. A suggestion. What about featuring elderly people? Alot of your videos are on young couples mainly 30s to early 40s. Nowadays people adopt the curves, rattans and muted earthy tones that those are no longer unique anymore.

Appreciate the beautiful dark wood furnishing. It's so much classier than the whitewashed wood trends. But the white walls and beams is a mood killer and makes the entire home look unfinished. I can't tell if it's a lighting or a tone issue but the shot at 2:17 is picture perfect and I wish the rest of the house had the same charm.

@stacked home - perhaps more of your videos should focus on couples with 2 or more kids w or w/o helper, or multi-generational families staying in 1 apartment/house to focus on the true meaning of efficient use of space. 2 people in a 1300 soft home is not really the norm I feel.
@roxelsberry
@roxelsberry Жыл бұрын
fully agree, i've really liked the content on this channel but a lot of the videos so far only feature singles or couples. after a while, it gets a bit old seeing how they occupy what are traditionally meant to be houses for larger families (the 4/5-room units). would be so much more interesting and impressive to feature larger families and understand how they design and utilise a similar amount of space. ngl, as a mid 20yo who aspires to start a family down the road, videos like these make me question if this is now the norm for my generation and a 4/5-room HDB is no longer enough for families with kids - where does that leave us?

The angle of the camera unfortunately makes it seems as such, however, it was a gentle tug and their dog enjoys it from time to time. That being said, we can see how it can be distressing to the viewer, so we'll edit it out 😄 Hope this clarifies!

Don't seem to have a clear theme. Some places look retro while the halls looks American contemporary. It just seem that every space was designed by a different ID and didn't have the flow and transition. I like the Accordion door that carve out a balcony cafe style feel to the unobstructed window views with the day shades that filters away the harsh daylight. The retro turquioise grill door is a nice touch to the entry of the home, the colours should have carried some of their way into the living area rather than an abrupt end to the nostalgic mood. What a pity.
@ikarirm

yeah whilst i like some of the parts in isolation, the living room , kitchen area etc, the contrast is quite jarring between the different areas and there should be 1-2 consistent elements that tie the different areas together.

Really nice space. But, I'm starting to notice a rather worrying trend that a vast majority of these homes are clearly designed to be for DINK couples.

@zhen86 Жыл бұрын
@@Gurugurustan population decreasing. The way they designed is not mean to have a kid.
@moltenbullet
@moltenbullet Жыл бұрын
@@Gurugurustan it's a multifaceted problem imho. First, on a national responsibility angle, at least replace yourselves, if you don't think you want population growth. This is important, because when we're old, we need young people in our society to support us and an imbalance will be problematic. It is concerning to me to see a mindset leaning towards not wanting kids, evident from the choice of design and space allocation in many of these projects. Next, a concerning issue is that typically/logically DINK couples will have more disposable income, thus enabling them to buy bigger homes. But bigger homes should be assigned to couples who intend to have or already have children but who, by virtue of having a larger family to support, are less likely to be able to afford bigger homes. Ironically, the more "societal good" (for lack of better phrasing) a couple does, such as raising children and taking care of elderly parents in the same household, the less likely they'll be able to afford a comfortable space for everyone in their nucleus. DINK couples are driving up the market price of larger homes when they buy these up only to convert them into a larger space for a single couple's use cases. Hence, we need to push back against this open market force and start thinking about the purpose of our homes. And last, the reality of DINK couples does not reflect the everyday abode of a Singaporean home, and the more of these DINK homes we showcase, with their high ceiling budgets and self-serving space reallocation, the more we drift from ground realities and the expectations we set in people's minds about what a home could be (should be) in Singapore. We also drive the perception of what a renovation should cost, which has gone up considerably in the last 5 years. Content creators have a responsibility to do more than just showcase what they want to showcase. They have a responsibility in their opportunity to define and shift mindsets through their content, much like traditional media has done in decades past. In this, I would recommend Stacked consider showcasing homes designed for full family nucleuses, and how tight spaces in flats are optimised for healthy and happy co-living in families of every size.
@juanadearco6356
@juanadearco6356 Жыл бұрын
@@moltenbullet I agree with your last point, partially for the second, and disagree for the first. As a childfree person, I definitely think the bigger units in public housing should be allocated towards families with kids because they need the space to nurture and grow. But is there publicly available stats to support the claim that DINK couples are driving up market prices? Are these DINK couples choosing to invest in a big home because raising kids is too expensive so they would rather funnel their money towards getting themselves a nice home? This ties in with the first point. If the population isn't feeling the drive to hit the replacement rate even though logically we know that an ageing population is unsustainable, then there must be something in society that is discouraging them from pursuing that course of action.
