I guess I'm having an emotion moment because this video made me tear up just a little. People helping people is what we need so much more of in this world. It's so nice hearing you sound so happy with your job and your life. I hope these feelings stay with you in your future and that anyone seeing this can find joy and passions in their life as you seem to have done

Part of my job (in a museum) is helping people get access to resources they need- whether they're doing genealogical research or working on a school project or writing a book, anything. I love seeing how excited they get and how pleasantly surprised they are that we'll stop what we're doing to help. I do wish it wasn't surprising to so many people though. A lot of people have this image in their head of what museums are like and feel like we're unapproachable. And I guess some museums are like that. But a lot of us aren't. It's always worth asking. We're nerds and we want to help you!

What wonderful reasons!! I loved hearing your passion for the work you do. As a Masters of Social Work student, I'm so in love with how libraries are transforming into such a varied and valuable community resource! The things you listed- helping a variety of people, teaching computer literacy classes, helping connect people with job applications, recommending books, etc... these are all things that help members of the community get what they need. I'm a reader and the "libraries are for books" part is still critically important, but so are all of the other functions libraries of the 21st century are serving. Given that public libraries are funded by taxes and the services are free, they are a vital resource for low-income populations that may not have access to these things otherwise. Keep up the great work, librarians are super heroes ^_^

Aww, this warms my heart. I feel you. So many of these feelings were familiar when I chose the field, and little moments happen, unfortunately the job market in general is so rocky (especially in Toronto) that the struggle takes away from remembering the little moments of joy. Each one of these feelings are honestly all the reasons I would give someone for why I CHOSE this field. You are such a good person, I can tell. A genuine pure-hearted Canadian librarian :)

Thank you for this! I am halfway through my ALA-AASL program and excited to soon be a school librarian! I think you've spoken in some of your videos about your job searching process, but would you mind sharing how some of your interviews went when interviewing for librarian positions or any tips you can share for soon-to-be librarians prepping for the job-hunting process? Thanks! :)

I love that you made this video! I love that you love your job. I love that you're so willing to share your knowledge with the internet. I love the joy on your face when talking about helping non-english speakers. I love how much you love helping the little patrons. I love the idea of making a display about... ancient Mesopotamia... and then watching someone find a new obsession. I love that you encourage curiosity. Happy Thanksgiving!

This video gave me so many feels! I’ve been working at a library for 3.5 years, first as a page and now in circulation, and I’ve experienced so many of these joys you mentioned. I’m currently applying for grad school for library science, so I’m going to watch this video whenever the process seems too hard. Thank you!

I love your videos. I'm an artist working from home, and I do love my job, but most of the time it gets pretty lonely. Libraries always make me feel welcome, honestly sometimes I feel like it's a miracle they still exist in this non commodified way. It must be really fullfilling to be able to interact with and help so many people in your day to day life, thank you for highlighting this on your channel :)

Sir.. You made me crying, you are sending very genuine happiness message that even I'm not experiencing it. It makes my heart feel warm and happy too, BTW I'm kinda just like you, I grow up in not definitely poor family by any means, but we often struggle too when my education bill comes and I'm also not very good in high school either. But I love learning another languages, and the idea of connecting with other people with different languages also very interesting for me. I'm 20 now and I feel kinda lost with what I want to do in my life, I'm searching about librarians 'cause I'm kinda curious about it and accidentally stumble upon your video, you've show me maybe this also another path that I can pursue to find my happiness in life. Because the problem in my country the libraries isn't very popular here, we barely have libraries in the big cities. I'm from Indonesia and English is my second language, that I learn it by myself, so I hope my words are not very confusing to understand. And I hope for the best for you too. Thank you

2:40 or 2:39 Yes, I can confirm that's a real reaction. I had no idea that libraries could do that. I've checked out about 3 or 4 inter-library loans. I treated them like they were made of glass cause they also told me if anything happens to the book it will be over 100 dollars to replace it.

One time my local librarians gave me a ride somewhere because there were teenagers in a car harassing me. And they were worried about me walking back if they were still out there. I guess you could say I'm kind of a regular patron I'm usually always in there maybe more than 2 or 4 times a month. And sometimes 1 time it was like twice in one week. Especially if I have a lot of books on hold or if I have other items. Like my local library has where you can actually check out basketballs and bounce houses and other things that are not just library books for the community to use. You can even check out a instant pot or a pressure cooker if you wanted to. And that's just how my local library rolls they're very about helping out etc. It's a small town so I get to see the difference between that and like a city library.

While most public librarians don't end up working in children's services, most WILL end up interacting with kids at some point since children are a major focus of a (public) library's patronage. There are still University libraries and special libraries though, which don't serve the public so directly. What draws you to librarianship?
