If you believe we should be challenging for all the big prizes then we need a modern huge capacity stadium, big enough for future ambitions. Constantly upgrading St James Park will not be enough no matter how sentimental you are about it, time to think big!

Redevelop to get an extra 8000 to 13000 capacity? Not great or visionary really. We could fill SJP currently with an extra 30000. So developing the only stand we can (Gallowgate End) leaving us with a lopsided ground (3 large sides instead of current 2) with the diddy east stand - unable to develop thanks to grade 1 Leazes Terrace. Don’t forget, we don’t even own the current SJP land (we rent it off the council). If the report is true then - Total wasted opportunity to build a world class 80000 Wembley of the North. Watching SJP ‘develop’ since 1975, it’s been a series of compromises. The latest news may yet be another one.

Me too!! Stood in the paddock and only being able to see the top half of players on the opposite side due to the curved pitch. Back then, who’d have thought we’d get 52000? The way we are now, thanks to season ticket/membership numbers we could go way over the 6000 additional seats a limited redevelopment of SJP would bring. The reality now is we are restrained by ffp etc for buying players. but we’re not restricted in how much can be spent on a state of the art stadium on Castle Leazes directly behind the Leazes end. I think this a one in a lifetime opportunity.

8000 seats average £50 a seat x 19 home games is an extra 7.6 million a season in revenue. looking forward to seeing what sort of plans they are going to put forward as its the best of both worlds. i dont think anyone REALLY wanted to move but feel everyone can see the demand is there for more capacity. i do agree with some of the comments that an extra 8000 seat isnt going to touch the demand

I’d rather have a new stadium 70k plus with a roof and built for the future. Rather than putting more extensions on it , the same people who want it to stay better not complain if they can’t have a ticket for 4 to 5 years and their is thousands less every game , a new stadium was the way to go to put Newcastle on the level we want to be and have a world winning stadium that hold concerts and world cups and rugby ect we could generate so much more money and have it all , for me it’s a set back and Iv been going to st James park for over 40 years , so please don’t complain if you loose your season ticket for a few years as someone has to , that’s the reality of staying for 8k more maybe 10k , leazers park was the way to go half build and build it bigger and better , the council would of done it with the money it could of blackmailed out of the club and how much it would then generate for all the other events,

Be very interesting to see the new plans, Leazes terrace behind the east stand is Grade one listed, but owned by a Saudi group, I'm sure the owners of Leazes terrace won't object, it's mostly lettings now anyway, the council will have to give it the go ahead, it's still a very tricky situation, for me 60,000 is not enough, got to be at least 65,000, meaning somehow the Gallowgate end and east stand HAVE to be renovated, it's going to be very interesting seeing the official plans, and hopefully done for the 2028 European championships. I personally would have loved a new stadium, it's going to be very interesting, but if we can do it, we've got the best people looking in to it, great times ahead anyway. HWTL

Gallowgate has metro running underground near it and a major important road that links to the RVI hospital so no development there is going to be simple or maybe even possible. The east stand as grade 1 listed Georgian buildings right near it so no way of upgrading that at all. Building upwards near residents brings other things like right to light laws into play. The only to stands that can be upgraded are already huge. Only 7,500 according to some shit rag paper imagine that were true, that would drastically decrease capacity while work gets carried out, the cost would be astronomical, the disruption to the area would be unbelievabe. All that for another 7,500? No way. You could build a purpose built mega arena for a bit more than an extension. I dont believe a word of it.

@rayakins
@rayakins Ай бұрын
If they manage to get it to 65,000 that would give us the third largest stadium in the country and second in the prem. owners will never want a stadium so large that it’s ‘easy’ to get tickets because that means empty seats for less attractive fixtures, they will always want there to be more demand than supply so the stadium is full and ticket prices rise with inflation. This is true of all clubs regardless of ownership. I don’t think building an 80k was ever likely.

I've said it loads of times- with the advancement in technology and construction methods, why can't we add another retractable tier to the east stand that can be lowered between games to allow the sunlight back through to the listed buildings? Even when it is erected, it came be made from some sort of see through 'glass' material to allow the light through as best as possible during games. I don't think the listed buildings are the main problem. The main problem is that stupid rule where sunlight needs to hit grade 1 listed buildings. Crazy. However, my preference was a new stadium. To all the people crying about wanting to stay at SJP- We've knocked down ALL stands at one point in the past and replaced them. Plus, how many times has the pitch been re-layed!?? There is literally nothing left of the original ground anyway so what difference does a new stadium make that will probably only be a matter of a few hundred yards away from SJP??

The location is iconic but a couple of hundred yards to Castle Leazes isn’t much different and sadly this is a real kick in teeth for generations of kids. Sorry Rob, you are so wrong, the land the stadium stands on is owned by the Freemen of Newcastle. It was Covenanted to the City in 1881 to be used for the purpose of sport for the community, this was when the West End team moved into sjp but couldn't afford it on their own, hence an East end club came in from St Peters to support them , after much arguing they decided on the name of the merged team as Newcastle United (was nearly Rangers) and joined the league in September 1892 ! By the way , the City Council administor on behalf of the Freemen !

They will never get 70,000 without Leazes terrace making way or completely demolishing the stadium and rebuilding, they could move the pitch left marginally to accomodate a marginally bigger east stand, they could then fill in 2 corners with big extensions, and leazes east could get marginally bigger, and extend the gallowgate up and out but I would be surprised if they could actually get more then around 8000 new seats without some creativity, but there is no way in hell they will get 18,000 new seats on the current design without a major planning permission victory

Personally I’m happy to keep St James where it is and grow it. Who’s to say what they might to do in the future.

If we can increase by 8-10,000 we'd have the third/fourth biggest stadium in the league. Man city only have a 55k capacity and chelsea way down at 40k. Extending St.James is the right thing to do keeping the atmosphere instead of a massive new soulless stadium.

Chelsea is a special case, they can charge 4x what we do. City also have a brand new stadium with more than 2x amount of hospitality we do, and that’s what drives revenue. If this is the route expect more corporate and very few added seats. A new larger capacity ground would have meant corporate all the way around (we have none in east & Gallowgate) and allowed for the cheaper seats too. Prices will go up, atmosphere will go down. It’s very disappointing news.

Fans make an atmosphere. Not the stadium. And parts of this season, it been flat. Like vs Sheff united

Build a temp stadium and move there for a season while we rebuild st James. It’s not like they can’t afford it!
