I am now confident with heat treating SF100 and getting exceptional results.
This steel is claimed to be 30% better edge retention than carbon steels whilst also easy to resharpen by hand. It has similar properties to AEB-L but does not require a cryogenic quench from what I have been told.
I am very pleased with the results this steel is giving.
I can only get this steel in 3mm thickness, so my 4mm knives will continue to be built using 01 tool steel.

Well what can I say the knife is absolutely stunning Sandy.end of a four-year journey for me if you remember we spoke about this now four years ago the knife I always wanted ,then to find the man for the job ,you to make for me but of course the love of 01 always deterred you from using stainless but I knew from the planted seed just had to wait till it sprouted and I knew at the end of it they would be a fantastic tree many thanks for letting me be part of this journey with you developing the hunter gatherer and encouraging the use of stainless when I knew your first love was 01 ,I feel privileged and will be forever greatfull for the time that you devoted to my knives as thay are very precious to me ,hope Mandy gets better soon she’s fortunate to have you by here side all the way Cheers mark

Sandy... I'm not sure what to say or where to go. You've face your own health issues, besides Mandy's.. it's appreciated how well Mandy had recovered and seeing how fit she'd become.. but fore all going so well for both of you.. what can we consider of Life.. the past 2 years, normal Life as We know it.. Can only pray things will got better, for Yours, Mandy's and the Family's strength and health over the coming days, weeks, months. On the knives, you excel yourself as always, love the pins, fit and finish, anyone and myself would just love one.. sadly it's another thing which is not the norm.. to be permitted to Hunt.. with a firearm or carry a Knife without just reason.. even to own. Very best wishes at this time to you and speedy recovery to Mandy.. Take care. Regards David

First of all Sandy, please let Mandy know that there are a whole big bunch of people out here that care very much about her and are wishing and praying for her quick recovery. God bless her, she is a very good lady and is being cared for by the best. Thank you for sharing this with us my friend. And you and the rest of your family need to take good care of yourselves (and each other) also so you can be strong for Mandy. Also I think that your venture over to the use of stainless steel in your knife making will definitely enhance your already stunning array of knives to offer. Stainless steel is a pretty awesome concept for cutting tools, especially in damp and challenging environments. It appears that you have perfected that process to the point where there really is no reason for you to not get started in that direction. It will surely be a winner for you. Take care Sandy and thanks once again for sharing another day with us and letting us know what's going on. See you on the next one.

Well now, 'she's' a pretty little thing , isn't she , in all her stainless' and iron wooded glory ! Have you set one aside for that grandbaby yet ? And congratulations on that news as well. Also - Hope Mandy has a comfortable recovery. When I saw you setting the knife between the aluminium slabs it flashed me back to a video from years ago , made by a bloke from (then Leigh-on-Sea, Essex) but now a bit further into the West than yourself . Reckon you may know him . Take care mate. - all of you.

Fantastic technology Sandy - Thanks for sharing. Best wishes to Mandy .. I wonder if she is a "reader" Sandy? I reckon the info in these two books (plus our NZ medics) has kept me ticking since my heart attack and triple bi-pass back in 1990. 'Prevent And Reverse Heart Disease' by Esselstyn and 'The China Study' by Campbell. - Worth a crack mate ..

Mr. Sandy I know this video is older but what was your tempering temps? Thanks from the US
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan Жыл бұрын
It depends on your austenitising temps but around 200 C gives around 60Hrc for 15 minute soaks at 1060C. Longer soaks and higher austenitising temps will need higher temps to get similar final hardness values but you then risk more retained austenite and the need for a cryo cycle becomes more critical. I soak for 15 minutes at 1060C then straight into the freezer overnight before two 2 hour temper cycles @ 200C gives 59.5/60Hrc with good springy edges
