In this video I will show you how I finished and installed a pine staircase on an ADU "tiny home" in Portland. The stair treads are 5/4 pine and risers are 1x8 Pine.
They are finished with one coat of white wash stain and three coats of varnish. The stairs are not sanded smooth so that they are not slippery. The finish comes out nice, not smooth and not rough.
This is a video in the ADU build series. If you would like to see more videos about this project check out the playlist here...

Top notch craftsmanship Sir, 👍 I would be cutting those treads with a mitre saw or tracksaw but that's just me, 🔨 🇮🇪

It’s called a Douglas square. I bought it at Woodcrafters in Portland Oregon. I haven’t seen them available elsewhere. They may not be made anymore I’m not sure. I’ve looked online and haven’t found them.

ive never seen an adjustable combination square, that's interesting. Can I suggest using an adjustable stair tread template, which means no measuring, no comparing angles, you don't even need to know what the angles are, it's just fit wall to wall, and placed right on the tread. They're not cheap but it saves a lot of time and makes it much easier. Also a question or two - did you glue your risers, why no glue from the tread to the riser, and is there a nosing at the top?

I feel that the adjustable square is easier. Once you have one side and you measure your set. I did use construction adhesive prior to fastening the treads down. Thanks for watching.

The square is called a Douglas Quad Square. I searched the google but couldn’t find it. I don’t remember where I bought it. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Maybe they went out of business. If I find one I will message you.

Could you please let me know what's the reason behind the gap in the bottom of the risers? Thank you for the video.
@yourdeptlogohere
@yourdeptlogohere 3 жыл бұрын
Which hap are you referring to? If it’s when the risers are being put in, they only have to be flush to the top. The stair tread will butt up against the riser and conceal the gap. If it’s a little shorter than the rough in riser then you don’t have to have exact measurements. You just use your straight edge and align them to the top.

It was a white tinted stain. I experimented on some scrap with different amounts of stain and then clear. It gave a consistent look that I liked.

I used a white wash, single coat and then a clear finish. I’d have to watch the video again to see what it was exactly.

Are pine treads better than oak???
@yourdeptlogohere
@yourdeptlogohere 4 жыл бұрын
They are cheaper than oak, and also have a different look. Oak is a harder wood, and will stand up to more abuse. It’s more a question of personal preference and budget.
@intelin123
@intelin123 4 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks. Pine are 10. Oak are 25. At lowes.
@yourdeptlogohere
@yourdeptlogohere 4 жыл бұрын
If you can find a lumber yard you will probably find a better deal, at least better quality wood than you can at Lowe’s or Home Depot. The quality will make the job look better when done. Also find a good quality paint company nearby like Benjamin Moore. They can help you with stains and finishes.
