How to fit spindles
Here we are at our final stage of our staircase renovation project: installing spindles. As usual, let’s begin!
The building regulations specify that the space between spindles, must not be greater than 99 mm. This means that 100 mm sphere must not pass through the spindles at any point. For example here, our spindles are set at 90 mm - which is well within the legal requirements.
Step 1: Calculate the number of spindles that is required. A good guide is 2 spindles per step and one spindle where there is a newel post on the step.
Step 2: Use one of the spindles that we cut in the previous video when installing the handrail and measure it along the angle. Multiply this number by the number of spindles that you got in the previous step. For example, we are using a 41 mm spindles, cut at 400. This gives us a measurement of 54 mm. We multiply this by 13 spindles, giving us a total of 702 mm.
Subtract this number from the length of the base rail and divide the answer by the number of spaces you will have between your spindles. The number of spaces will be one more than the number of spindles.
This total is the spacing between your spindles. If the spacing is too big, simply add a spindle to your calculations, or, if you feel the spacing is too small, subtract a spindle. But always remember the building regulations regarding the spacing between spindles.
Step 3: it is now time to use the slips that you received when ordering your handrail and base rail. Cut a first piece at the measurement you worked out previously, at the angle of your stairs. Create the space between the newel post and your first spindle.
Step 4: After cutting it, glue it and fix it in place.
Step 5: Before installing your first slip in the handrail, add a spindle, check it with the spirit level and adjust your spacing if required.
Step 6: When you are happy with how it fits, go ahead and install it and the first spindle. Glue them and fix them in place.
Continue cutting and installing the remaining slips and spindles. We recommend you only cut a few at a time; check them as you go, and adjust your measurements if needed.
For the landing area, calculate the number of spindles required by measuring the base rail and dividing it to 121. Continue on cutting and installing your remaining spindles and slips. Don’t forget, the same building regulations apply.
