This is phenomenal - I just found a void above our stairs today. It’s already completely boxed in, but also completely hollow. I’m thinking of doing something exactly like this!! Great work and thanks for the video!

We've been considering doing something like this for a while, since my son's room could do with a built-in wardrobe to save him space. This video definitely helped visualise what we could end up with, brilliant work!

Great work really impressive 👍🏻 out of curiosity how much did this cost in materials? Also what size timber did you use? I’m considering doing something similar as we have the same style staircase. Many thanks.

This is exactly how the master bedroom closet was built in my 1939 house. The corner on the drywall above the stairs is just a bit low (but I clear it fine), and has been beat up a little bit over the years. I think I'll see if I can add a piece of trim there to protect it. I wonder if I have room for a trap door like you put in!

Fantastic construction! How are you supporting your ladder though - looks like you put a plank on one stair and a box of some sort on the lower stair - is that right? Is it safe? (Wanting to do something similar myself but got stuck at step one trying to figure out how to safely work at that height over the stairwell).
@manayupa
@manayupa 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. I've used two Makita boxes on the lower step (2 down) and connected these with the upper step using a plywood board. Only then I've placed the ladder on. I'm aware there are some ladders that can be placed on the steps but I didn't have one.

@kingsgate

I was in fact thinking what would my answer be, should anyone ask me this. I'm yet unsure, due to the amount of work and effort it took. I was mentally preparing myself and rethinking the construction for a couple of years (event then you can still see a number of changes I've made on the way), with an unwavering support from my wife: "Don't do it!". She was a bit afraid of the scale of the challenge, though fully appreciative now. Hands down it was worth it, though if anyone would want me to do it again, they would need at least £3k to convince me ;)

Amazing work🎉 Could you let me know what kind of screw to fix the stud (wood) to the plasterboard? Thanks.
@kingsgate
@kingsgate 7 ай бұрын
You can't screw the stud to the plasterboard. You'd need to locate the wall stud first and align your construction studs with it. In other words you screw the construction stud to the existing, wall stud. You'd need to use long screws for that, so they go through your stud, plasterboard and into the wall stud.

Doesn't look like there's any ventilation in there. Is it a problem? Our fitted wardrobes had condensation issues before we installed vents. Although it was on an exterior wall.

That's a very good question. We were in fact a bit afraid that this might be an issue. So far so good, though should any such problem arise I'd make a vent on the small wall I've put between the wardrobe and the stairway.

That looked like a lot of work and expense (if you paid for a professional to do the work) for just a smallish additional wardrobe. It might have been cheaper to throw a clothes rail in the loft or sort clothes into seasons and cycle them between loft and wardrobe. It would be nice to know if the man contracted himself out to do the work how much it would have cost including materials, too much for most paupers like me. Great job though, looked lovely
@kingsgate
@kingsgate 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, thanks. The project was mainly around gaining more space by using otherwise idle area. I haven't do the costs calcs, though the main expense would be: the tools, which I've already had; and the rough materials, which I expect would be a fraction of what you'd pay a contractor I guess.

@manayupa
@manayupa 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. In fact Ikea close to my place has a free wood display, where they make damaged or otherwise defective furniture parts free for grabs and that's where I've got some of these from :) Though most would be too thin for the job so I had to buy the rest.
