Stalled Train Needs 6 Locomotives To Make It Up "The Hill" & NS Research Train Inspects The Hill

Norfolk Southern Train Stalls Half Way Up The Hill & Needs Manned Pusher Locomotives! Listen To 6 Locomotives Move Over A Mile Of Train Up The Steep Grade. "The Brick" Research Train is also seen running up the hill and passing the railroad crossing in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. We have a train with a DPU and we have Canadian Pacific Railroad and Burlington Santa Fe Railroad locomotives. These trains are on the hill in Crescent Springs, Kentucky.
I went to the hill to meet up with Scott, 1960gambit to see if we could get a heavy train coming up. We got lucky and got Train 123 coming up. Train 123 had the second locomotive die on them and they stalled out half way up the hill at Mile Post 5.7 and called the DI dispatcher to request a push. Train 90 radioed the dispatcher and told them that they would push the train up the hill. Train 123 is the train that sometimes has high and wide loads of Caterpillar bulldozers on the head end. Today they didn't have any but I have a great video of them crossing High Bridge, Kentucky with a half dozen high and wide loads followed by several gigantic transformer loads.
This video also features the Norfolk Southern research train known as "The Brick". The second unit on the train is not a locomotive. It has computers and other equipment used for inspecting the track. Google The Brick for more information.
We also see a couple of trains easing down the hill and one of the trains has a DPU on the rear. Scott got here first and told me that minutes before I got here, the steel coils train with a DPU on the rear went past. Then when I was leaving I noticed a mixed freight going down the hill. I had just pulled out of the parking lot and drove a few hundred feet. Oh well, that's how it goes. Lol

The power is so impressive It amazes me how much these locomotives can pull. It's getting a little scary here in Iowa with the Mississippi river overflowing it's banks. The water is very close to the train tracks along the border with Wisconsin and Illinois. Thanks for another great video.

No doubt the inbound train was happy to hear they could go because I'm sure they didn't want to be stuck on the road. The big uphill train should have had some nutrients from its consists much of it from. A DM and a batch of grain that was loaded on the Kankakee Beaverville and Southern. KBSR cars including a former klemme grain car with the pink paint bleeding through. Then CP leads a Tate & Lyle set of empties back to Indiana. The 3 pushers on the mega train would have been worthy of Surround-sound

Thank you for another productive day at the Beechwood Road crossing in Crescent Springs, Kentucky, Jaw Tooth! Norfolk Southern train #123 needed the help of those manned DPU units at the end of the train to get up the hill. The dead BNSF engine on the front of the train had to be the cause of train #127:3 stalling while coming up the hill. I think the train symbol of 90 was used to designate the DPU units that were tacked on the end of the train to shove train #123 up the hill. At 12:29 a former Chicago & North Western Railroad green covered grain hopper car appeared in the train. I could not read the reporting marks on that car. At 12:36 another single former CNW green covered grain hopper car appeared. This car had KBSR reporting marks. At 12:43 three more former CNW green covered grain hopper cars appeared. These three cars also had KBSR reporting marks. KBSR are the reporting marks for the Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern Railroad. The "Brick" heading up hill out of the Ohio River Valley was a bonus catch!

I got back the other day from my first ever train trip from St. Louis to Austin and back and while much of it was a study in tardiness and missing dates and my very last train home ( the only one that was on time), it was interesting! I LOVED the leg room and the hassle-free boarding. No basically stripping down and having everything x-rayed like they do flying. I met two You Tubers there I've been following for years now but I'm afraid I didn't make a great first impression as I'm not used to packing a razor for many years now and the hotel had none that I could see anywhere. I know I had some stubble so I probably looked like a bum! Then, on the way you see all the old tracks and obvious places where they used to be and some being half-buried.. Not to mention all of the obvious former stations, big and small. Sure makes me wonder just how many places the railroads went in the 20's and 30's! Thanks to your videos I found myself looking at the pedigree of the rails and now I know what the inscriptions mean! Being 58 I didn't enjoy having to go down stairs then back up stairs to use the facilities but it is what it is! Even with the problems I would consider taking the train again though next time I might spring for the sleeper ticket as those people are on the bottom and don't have to go up and down the stairs!

@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Жыл бұрын
Remember that, when you hear stories of Big Boys pulling 100-car trains solo, those were mostly 40ft box cars. Modern railcars are about 50% bigger than that, so pulling 100 cars in the 1940s is more like pulling 65 cars today. So, no, a Big Boy probably wouldn't be able to pull that train up that hill on its own.
