If there is an afterlife, I would _not_ rest in peace. I'd look for the people whose shoddy care resulted in death or just get revenge on the airline owners.

I have been. We were landing during an ice storm in Mason City, IA when we were SLAMMED with a wind gust (little Saab, much smaller than the ATR). I thought I was about to die and it was oddly peaceful as I was laying flat against the window and watching the runway approach... though judging by the screams and loss of bowel control by others; it was not a shared sentiment. Our pilots were able to regain control and keep it until we were able to land safely. Incredible save by two pilots in their early 20s making 19k a year.

Hearing the pilots voices made this even tougher to watch. They did everything they could with what they were given.

They struggled so hard to keep their plane going. But even the best pilots cannot control a defective plane. So often, crappy, unauthorized, improper repairs & maintenance are just too much. AA191, That Alaska Air flight, the JAL 747 rear bulkhead failure and others.

​@@jsquire5pa They we're doing everything they could/shoud have done. But with the increased drag any attempt at landing anywhere may have resulted in disaster. They needed to maintain high speed to overcome the drag of the left hand prop. And you cannot land at high speed. Also the right engine could not sustain high speed/load for very long by itself. Once that left prop had jammed in a high drag position, they we're doomed whatever they did. Maybe Gus M would have climbed out on the wing and fixed the prop with his bare hands.

I don't really know much about planes and I didn't understand this video fully but, I was just thinking about that. If you could briefly explain what happened to me thatd be kind of you too.

All crashes are sad and nobody deserves being killed in a crash, but this crew really had deserved another outcome. After first recovering, I hoped so much that they would make it safely to the airport.

That's what they are trained to do. Fly to the bitter end. Just like Japan Airlines 123, or Alaska Airlines 261, or United Airlines 232 (although they had a somewhat better ending).

These pilots did all they could to cope with a very confusing set of circumstances. I am a retired airline pilot with 30,000 hours and I don’t think I could have done any better than these guys. I have always said there are a million ways to die in an aircraft and I just learned that there are now a million and one ways. RIP to these brave pilots who performed well in a difficult situation.

"Standby Pakistan 661" the panic in pilot's voice is just heart breaking. I've heard this cockpit recording so many times since the crash but it still sinks my heart. It was a national tragedy for us. Including all precious souls on board was our beloved Junaid Jamshed. I can't believe this was in 2016 because it feels like it happened yesterday. May all the souls aboard Pakistan 661 find eternal peace 💔

Yes those last words break my heart too. He was looking at the approaching mountain as he spoke those. Ah....what a horrific tragedy in every way.

This is truly one of the most badass and professional displays of airmanship. All air crashes are tragedies but after what these champs went through, and the way they kept it together to the end, they really really deserved to walk away from this one😔 Props to the professional ATC too.

@@denysvlasenko1865 If you watched the whole thing, that prop wouldn't feather. They tried. I've flown steam-gauge airplanes for 53 years, most without autopilots, and would have landed under no power for sure after the first loss of control, although I think I'd have reduced the power on the good engine and found a clearing to set it down in even before that! Damaged airplane, yes, but walk away, yes also!

A crash that was no fault of the pilots, who recovered from a complete 360 degree roll in a passenger airplane. Absolutely astounding airmanship. Yet there is nothing they could do when the plane was literally uncontrollable. Excellent documentary, as always. And I love the inclusion of the audio clips in the videos. Really drives home how real these events are.

@@denysvlasenko1865 If you have no way to control the pitch of the props, it will windmill. Windmills are things that when moving air is applied to them they rotate, this is the reverse of a propeller. Without a system to apply some sore a friction to the props or to feather them correctly they just keep spinning

There may be too much programmed "automatic" flying. Pilots should have complete control of their planes from takeoff to landing. This is the down side of that.

A bunch of heroes in that cockpit. I’m always surprised at how calm they can speak when you can hear the urgency and fear in their voice. God bless them and the souls on board.

My heart sank when the plane broke from that stuck left turn to a sudden deep right spin under consistent control inputs. You just know the pilots are fighting in the dark when the plane is randomly changing its own aerodynamic characteristics without warning. They didn't crack, they fought bravely to keep flying until the bitter end. 🥀

I don't understand the video captions at that point, I think maybe they are wrong. It says they advanced power on the #2 (right) engine, but that also pitch decreased on that same engine, which then it says caused an immediate loss of drag from the #1 engine? Pretty sure this was supposed to say that the prop on the left, #1 engine suddenly feathered which caused the loss of drag, which would have caused the roll to the right since they were at that moment feeding in excessive right rudder input to counteract the drag that was there while also counteracting the additional left yaw component caused by high power on the right (#2) engine.

@@seeingeyegod It looks like the caption has a typo (somewhere over TYPO... sorry). It was a very complex situation, one far outside the pilots' understanding at the time. I believe the records indicate that, before the right spin, the pilots had reduced #2 power in an attempt to counteract the increasing left turn and high bank angle brought on by the high-drag condition of the #1 engine, fearing a stall or inversion. I think the goal was probably just to level the plane and correct the heading, and they were holding right rudder as well. In doing so, however, their airspeed dropped further, which they had not been monitoring well during the earlier stages of the flight. After something like 20 seconds of reduced #2 power, they received a stall warning and throttled up. Possibly due to the very low airspeed/stall, the #1 prop finally feathered again and they rolled to the right. Picking up airspeed again after the spin, the #1 prop again settled into a high drag state.

Pilots fought till the bitter end. The control was also professionally handling the situation but didn't end to anyone's advantage. Mind boggling is the fact that investigators pinpointed the cause being "unauthorised maintenance" but nobody could ever fix the responsibility over whoever did that. RIP brave pilots for fighting tooth and nail to try saving the unfortunate souls onboard.

This was a harsh one. After the roll there was a sense that they had got things under control again, even in a damaged aircraft. And then, even with the best effort and knowledge, and all their experience, because of shoddy maintenance, it was impossible for them to control the aeroplane. The plane was working against them the whole time. It just shows how long the chain is to keep aeroplanes airworthy, and when you get on one, how many hundreds of people are involved in making your flight safe. The other scary thing is: you have no idea what is going on behind the cockpit doors, and the decisions being made to make sure the plane gets down safely. Pilots are a breed apart, when it comes to managing high risk situations.

They're death certificate was signed by that uncanny human tendency to ASSUME A RETURN TO NORMALCY WILL SOLVE ABNORMAL SITUATIONS... they kept wanting to call and response with ATC get landing vectors and go thru that whole song and dance... like it was their desire to live wishing in vain getting into some normal routine would save their abnormal flight... Unfortunately no.

And now after watching many of these excellent videos, I’m even more unsure of flying. Knowing about so many of the little, tiny problems that could possibly occur, causing a total disaster, it seems like every single flight is a almost miracle of sorts.

Imagine the number of passengers that probably didn't have their seatbelts on. What you don't get from these videos is the *noise* that must've followed from the plane suddenly spinning 360°. The terrifying screams of people falling around up into the roof and down into the seats. The sounds of everything in the cabin, including baggage, cutlery and jackets going in all directions. The desperate pleas for God to help them. Fucking terrifying.

@@TheWolfwiththeDragon I know I can't imagine the terror of all those people aboard. I think the same thing too, the screams and the fear these people go through in their last moments. Especially the moms who are their with their children and can't protect them. Things falling everywhere and the pilots trying desperately to do something. Once I heard the cockpit voice recorder for a fallen airplane and I heard the pilot tell his mom he loved him I couldn't listen to another one. Heartbreaking.

If that were the case and I was onboard (I NEVER unfasten my seatbelt unless I go pee, which I try not to do) but I would hope the overhead bins with luggage etc in it.. would fall out and bonk me in the head and break my neck and knock me out or kill me before we crashed in the ground

ATC controllers at Islamabad ATC at the time were Air force Officers.The pilots were Civilians.You should judge the conversation in that context.

As a passenger, I'm terrified even boarding the plane and check out the pilot and co-pilot visually. Not too old? Not too young? Not drunk? But I see from these videos that there are many other factors, maintenance for one. Is there a way to tell visually when boarding if I'm safe on this aircraft?? Probably no, but just asking the voices of experience here.

@@Wabbelpaddel yes, that would be great. I wish they would do that. A pilot that I was talking with once at the gate basically told me the same thing. I decided that maintenance is more of an issue for pilots than anything.

The pilot was really really courageous , brave and patient person . the fact that even after his plane went into a dive and a roll at the same time but he tried his best to remain his calm and make ATC conversations breaks my heart

You have to admire the pilots for fighting until the bitter end in an impossible situation. I would have been panicked beyond the point of reason in their situation, much less been able to effectively communicate with ATC or try to work the problem with my crewmates. These guys deserved a much better outcome, but unfortunately, life isn't always fair.

Outstanding video TFC, as always! I feel bad for the pilots, not knowing what is happening, and then recovering from an inverted state, just beginning to calm down, and then you soon after witness a stall which is the last thing you will see.

I just imagine them feeling so thankful, still trembling but so relieved that they survived what they thought was going to be a crash. Then that feeling of absolute horror comes back to them as it happens again. Only this time to die. It makes me sick thinking about it.

Yes his videos into Pakistan's mountainous airports were breathtaking. We truly lost a gem of a pilot. He was known for his professionalism and exceptional flying skills as seen in this recreation to fight to keep the plane up

This crew really reminds me of the Alaska 261 crew, where a super experienced and smart crew were faced with an unprecedented and unsurvivable situation. RIP to all those lost.

Probably the last line the jocks heard the ATC say was: "Confirm you have visual contact with the ground?" They definitely were, but not how ATC meant it. Awfully tragic

Oh my God, was that sad. The crew was exceptional as was were the folks in the tower -- yet they were all helpless. The big take-away -- nobody panicked!!!! God bless them all.

Having heard many ATC recordings with controllers who were idiots or aircrew who were missing important communications, it is tragic that everyone we heard was highly professional and competent, yet still unable to correct the situation.

Please don’t be afraid. pilots train for years (2-3) and the F/O (right side) has any amount of flight hours, but the captain (left side) has a large amount of flight hours. Technology is also improving, and pilots and the people who make airplanes are always learning how to make it safer.

They should have landed at Saidu Sharif Airport easily, no need to go to Islamabd. They passed Saidu Sharif Airport when the Engineer was called from Passenger cabin. They knew there was a problem.

The first officer was Ali Janjua, we worked two years together at a call center for an American insurance Square trade before he got recruited into PIA. He was a very happy go lucky person, always full of energy and joy. Ahhh... I remember he always used to say may day may day and I once asked him why he do it? He was son of a pilot . He explained to me what a may day call means. The last time we had dinner was at Balochistan sajji in gulistan e jauhar, two months before the crash. That was the last time I met him...may his and every other soul in the crash rest in piece.Ameen illahi ameen 😢

I remember very well about hearing the news of this airplane crashing in a headlines. Honestly, I couldn't help crying after knowing how bravely these champs have fought with the plane for that long and they got the opposite of what they truly deserved 😭. Massive respect to the brave pilots.

Fun fact: the famous cloth brand “J.” Owner ‘Junaid Jamshed’ was onboard this flight and he tragically died. After his death the company has had many successes. May Junaid Jamshed rest in peace

Terror was the perfect word for this incident. It is one of the most terrific ends I have seen. Those poor people must have thought it was all over when the crew managed to bring the aircraft under control the first time, only for much worse to be ahead. Now I understand why many countries banned PIA flights after last year's incident, though obviously this crew were not to blame in 2016. These incidents seem to show a company that's been cutting corners for a number of years, and people always pay for that with their lives. To all those who lost their lives in 2016 and 2020, God or Allah rest their souls.

It then also came to mean 'of great size, amount, or intensity' (such as the line "the traffic was terrific' to describe busy roads from the Christmas carol "There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays". ) It's a modern usage for it to be a positive word. Just fantastic...absolutely fantastic. My heart was actually pounding by the final stall and dive into the mountainside. Not to keep beating a drum like I did last week, but this is EXACTLY the reason why narration should never be included. I was in that airplane with those heroic pilots trying to save the plane and the lives of those onboard. The 360 degree roll...the hope filled recovery and the subsequent loss of control must have horrified those poor people...it felt horrible for me! If this experience was talked through, none of that would have run through me. It's the reason I watch the channel every week and why I was so upset at last week's presentation. Sorry for all that!!! This is magnificent.

@@kennethsrensen7706 I'm aware of that, I'm studying to be a pilot and I know all of this that you mentioned, my point is though, that the circumstances that they were into led them to commit mistakes that in the same circumstances others pilots would also commit, they didn't fail, the whole system did, and it's valid to remark that in real life things goes really different than in a sim, you never know how exactly your failure will be till it happens, an example of that is the crash of TAM flight 402 in 1996 in this crash the circumstances set the pilots to fail, and no one could have saved that flight not without the acknowledgment of what was going on with the aircraft, same same for this PIA flight

@@kennethsrensen7706 sure, I agree that nowadays pilots are dependent on the autopilot but it wasn't the case here, I just took a look at the final report and it says: the crew shut down the engine, and they were experiencing 7 times more drag than a normal single engine drag, it wasn't a normal engine failure they were suffering from a aerodynamic distress, and it's easy to handfly when everything is alright but when your plane is trying to bring you down it's another story, and they managed to take the plane out of a dive at low level, so they knew how to fly they just couldn't, one thing you learn when you studying to be a pilot is that YOU WILL FAIL, dosen't matter you're not a machine, so expect to fail, so maybe if you're seeing from a investigation point you'll have a different vision, but in the real life when you're up there, with all the emotional charges thinking about your life your family things are different, so they could have committed mistakes but it wasn't the main cause of the crash and till the end they fought to save everyone so they acted like pros

@@kennethsrensen7706 - I think his point is that the Pitch control was FUBAR before they ever took off. Maintenance put them in a horrible situation. I understand they didn't feather the prop, but they didn't know they were screwed before they ever took off.

@@kennethsrensen7706 I disagree. Yes the procedure is shut down the engine and feather the prop, but part of the problem in this case was they couldn’t feather it. With the drag created by that if they had pulled back on number 2 they would have stalled out earlier. While I agree with you that all pilots are trained in simulators to handle emergency situations, there is a vast difference between a safe simulator and a “oh shit we’re gonna die moment”. Yes they lost control when the autopilot disconnected but they regained control and held it for as long as they could in the conditions they were in. This wasn’t pilot error, this was a maintenance error that pretty much doomed this flight no matter what the flight crew did. RIP the flight crew and passengers on this flight.

It’s just amazing how things go bad so quick. I lived and worked in the Middle East for 15 years and I had to travel a lot. They tried to book me a few times on PIA and I just flat out refused especially after the last crash. Maintenance, pilot error etc. just to risky. RIP to all of them, those pilots did the best they could.

I can't begin to imagine what was happening on board this plane as the plane flipped upside down in the sky! Many plane crashes are a result of improper maintenance who overlook a critical problem! Cracked is very different from broken. Besides, I imagine they don't inspect the turbine prior to every flight. Even if they did, you can only see the last stage and the last stage turbine blade failure rarely cause an engine to shut down.

@@linanicolia1363 Pre-flight inspection is just a walk around the plane looking for visible damage, the turbine is inside the engine nacelle, there is no way you would see any damage during pre-flight.

I was Copilot on AT-42 300 with a small Regional Airline in Brazil and I've been promoted as a Captain on E-120 Brasilia, which has had some problems with Propeller Control before, I knew that end up on lost of Control with fatal crashes, during the sim training we had some time to spare and SFI said: - free time for free practice guys, so I asked the very same failure at 15 thousand feet, my idea was to reduce the power on opposite good engine, pitch down to gain speed and control effectiveness using the Kinect Energy, my God the Aircraft bank so quick to the crippled side, and keep spinning, I wanted pitch down by 5 degrees maybe, it went to 25 degrees down...it was simulator and we lost spatial orientation, on a VMC maybe we have a chance to save the day. The SFI stopped the Sim before the crash. We finished everything and went to the hotel to Celebrate my upgrade as a Captain. I always had the idea that maybe on lucky VMC day it could be possible to make it, reducing power on the good side and using Kinect energy for the speed, sure would be a crash, being a lucky day, could be a controlled crash, unfortunately the training costs are high and Training Managers don't want us to play anything out of book. I knew about this sad crash, but few details, These pilots made a great job, would they have been trained to keep the speed, to set the flaps and go for a controlled crash the outcome would be different. Almost 30 years have gone, Covid19 took away my job, and life goes on. RIP Crew and Passengers.

I flew this route (and I think this same plane) in 2008. It's a stunningly beautiful route but known to be dangerous for a number of reasons. My thoughts go out to all the victims.

i feel a certain weirdness when i go see the cessna 184 my grandfather left when he died. at first it was all alien to me. we were going to just repair it and sell it. but now i know more or less what each knob and button does thanks to fs and i kinda wanted to fly it before selling it :( too bad it's not happening. i'll just, idk, but a controller and keep flying the simulator instead.

I'm not sure why I watch these, since I'm not a Pilot but a fearful passenger😊, I think the strength of the human spirit to persevere no matter the outcome, is what brings me back time and again. In the stories where a plane fails completely and the Pilots are able to hold out long enough to get their passengers and themselves to safety- I am so inspired !😊❤

A slow airspeed (caused by the increased drag from failed propeller) creates control reversion where you must point the nose for airspeed, while using ailerons for roll only steepens the roll in wrong direction. Rudder is what’s required to keep the nose straight. The brief pause was due to added energy (speed) from the inverted dive, then back to the original issue. If you can’t keep it in the air, at least keep it in a straight line and find someplace “soft” to crash. Condolences to all for this tragedy.

the one thing that killed them in that situation was a bank into the failed engine, not sure if they would be able to have kept speed up to that point but that might've been the difference between 47 people alive or dead. RIP them still, i couldnt have handled the situation much better myself
