Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 2008 film Quantum of Solace, a film that's got a rep as a movie with a silly name and a forgettable plot and villain. James Bond 007 (Daniel Craig) pretends he's not out for vengeance when he clearly is. Directed by Marc Forster. Stars Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko, Gemma Arterton, Jeffrey Wright, David Harbour, Judi Dench.

The movie is under-cooked (due as much to a writers' strike as an ill-fitting director). However, I did warm to Craig considerably in this sequel. His 'Casino Royale' characterisation wasn't meant to make him that sympathetic overall. His Bond had several clear flaws in that film that needed blunting. From the moment he arrives with Mr. White for the interrogation with M, it's clear that Bond is carrying considerable psychic pain which humanises him and makes it easier to empathise and relate to him.

Quantum might even be my fave of Craig’s. It’s the most rewatchable. Bond is badass and hadn’t yet begun to age prematurely. It’s a short punchy film with great action, great character moments and subtle humour. It looks beautiful and has a brilliant soundtrack by Arnold. I for one really enjoy the experimental feel to it. When I first saw it I was a bit disappointed- the end is very anticlimactic and rather dull.. but i’ve grown to appreciate the film.

Quantum of Solace is (along with The Living Daylights) one of the most underrated Bond films for me. Is it as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall either side of it? No. But it's slick, doesn't outstay its welcome at under 2 hours, the direction is very good and the action is great. The opera scene and the final fight in the exploding hotel are as good as anything in the series.

I would say this is my favourite Bond film of Craig’s tenure. The editing is very chaotic and makes the story feel way too rushed, but that helps me enjoy it as it’s a fun action-packed thrill ride with some vaguely memorable characters and some fun scenes. Craig gives a peak performance, being a brutal blunt instrument who gets into some real brutal fights. I admit I also love the title song, mainly because it’s the only high-energy Bond song we’ve had in years. It gets me in the mood to enjoy the movie, whilst the three that follow just depress me.

The problem with Quantum, in my obviously esteemed personal opinion, is that it has a whole series of excellent visuals. The opening car chase is rather good, the rope fight is excellent, spotting the board members at the opera is great, the visual storytelling through the desert is also great, but the whole thing is somehow less than the sum of its parts. It's oddly unsatisfying.
@user-et6pj4db9s
@user-et6pj4db9s Ай бұрын
I found it perfectly satisfying. It's a straight forward revenge film unlike Diamonds Are Forever which does little to address the fact Bond's first and only wife gets murdered. I'm surprised you said the opening car chase was good though as usually people criticise the bad editing, as if they'd know about editing, so glad you gave that a thumbs up.
@aaronleverton4221

@@user-et6pj4db9s The stakes in the chase are high, the visuals tell you they are high, the Aston is being dismembered as the chase goes on (again, high stakes), the locations look great, it's possibly the best Bond car chase since the Lotus on Sardinia. Not counting The Living Daylights because that wasn't really a car chase, nor was Tomorrow Never Dies. The Iceland chase is fun, but that's its problem: fun. This one was urgent.

@@ricardocantoral7672 Some can't. The opera scene was superb and the editing of the dogfight was exactly what it should have been. All of the action followed logically. For a clear example of poor editing, watch the car/motorcycle chase in Never Say Never Again. Choppy? watch OHMSS. The problem with the editing is the rush from international location to international location. The extra fifteen minutes of film time could have been spent on the transitions.

It's a hotel of sorts, for scientists on rotation at the observatory that's attached to it, in Chile. Until watching your review, I could remember absolutely nothing else about it. Quantum of Solace is the title of an Ian Fleming short story originally published in 1959. It was included in the short story collection For Your Eyes Only (1960). The movie producers are running short on titles for their films, as the titles for Flemming’s major books (the spy books) have been used. In addition to Quantum of Solace, other short story titles used were For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and The Living Daylights. The movie plots are completely re-written, and the only link between short stories and films are the titles. Incidentally, the novel The Spy Who Lived Me was also a complete re-write, as the novel is a first person narrative told by a young Canadian woman, Viv Michel. Bond appears about two-thirds of the way into the book to save Viv from Peril.

I'm on the same page regarding this movie's theme song. Continuing the rock aspect of Chris Cornell's brilliant "You Know My Name", I thought QOS would similarly continue the quality of "Casino Royale". It seemed to be the case for the first 15-20 mins. Then it just fell off a cliff for me personally. And it was a trajectory that continued to plummet for the remainder of Craig's tenure. In my opinion, of course. There are some great action set pieces. And "pieces" is the issue for me. They just didn't add up to a cohesive high quality whole.

I hated this one on release, mainly due to the shaky am used for the action, the shorthand telling of thr Opera shootout and Gemma Arteton's character (nb not the actress, she's great). But over time, I began to enjoy this a lot more. There are a lot of good character moments, the plane chase was really good and Olga Kurylenko got her kick ass moment at the end. The trilogy of Casino, Quantum and Skyfall do such a great job of stripping down Bond to his most base level then build him back up into 007. It's such a shame that they felt the need to shoehorn more into the same storyline with Spectre and No Time To Die.

This film, generally speaking, is a mess. I got the feeling when watching it that even the people making it don’t really know what is going on. That said, I had one of the most unintentionally funny scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie, when he casually tosses his friends body into the dumpster and steals his wallet. I burst out laughing when I saw this, as it was the most callous thing I’ve ever seen, and this is from someone who grew up watching films like Salo & Cannibal Holocaust. Was this intentional? Or was it just yet another of the ‘Let’s throw shit at the wall and see what sticks’ way of thinking? Ps: did they realise the villain looks almost exactly like Jools Holland?

They set up the Quantum Storyline so nicely, just to kick it in the trash with the shitty Sam Mendes Movies... talk about mediocre... yikes... "No time to die" was a great ending to Craigs tenure though... but QoS had a sleazy disgusting villain and a great David Harbour before anyone knew him from Stranger Things. Big Upside also: the parts of Mathis and Leiter. I think this is a great movie and is also a great product of its time. Go watch it again... worth your time! 🙂

Unironically one of my favorite Bond films. It’s fast paced and a little bit different in a way I like. People shat on License to Kill for years because it didn’t follow the usual formula, but now most consider it good. I see Quantum like that. On the other hand I disliked Casino Royale because it’s slow (45 minutes of poker) and Skyfall because the plot is silly - the villains plan relying largely on coincidences. I’m not saying they’re bad movies - I just like Quantum more.

I just binge-watched all of the Daniel Craig Bond movies on trans-Pacific flights (except No Time to Die, which they didn't have). I hadn't seen any of them before. I thought Casino Royale was surprisingly great, and they kind of gradually slid downhill from there, as all the traditional elements of the Bond formula got reintroduced. (I did like the Craig-era versions of Q and Moneypenny, introduced in the later films; they were entertaining--but they served to dilute the presentation of Craig's Bond as a terrifying thug, which is the thing that really makes these films work: the realization that you shouldn't want to be anywhere near this guy.) Maybe giving the films a story arc was a mistake--it gets sillier as it goes on, especially in Spectre. But I thought Quantum of Solace was still comparatively good.

The film is dire; but, I never found the follow ups to be particularly awe-inspiring, either. Apart from Casino Royale, the Craig films leave me cold, with the over-dependence on 9/11 metaphors, betrayals, copycat scenes and massive leaps in logic (or technological stupidity). MI-6 ends up being a bigger bunch of morons than in the later Roger Moore years. I know Skyfall and SPECTRE get high praise, but they did nothing for me. Part of the problem is completely leaving behind the fantasy roots to try to seem contemporary, but they end up with minor villains. I miss the days of volcano fortresses and 3rd act commando attacks and nasty henchmen. That was why I preferred The Man From UNCLE and Kingsman, to the Bond films, as they reveled in what used to be cool about the Bond films.

I have to respectfully disagree on a couple of things: the film doesn't feel bigger than Casino at all. Quite the opposite. They rush through so many set pieces - nothing really sticks and the action (and by that I mean the EDITING) is some of the worst I have ever seen. Which is frustrating, because some stunts were amazing and you just couldn't SEE them properly. Also, the amateurish theme song will always remain on my "worst of all time" list. I mean, seriously - the sound engineering was INTENTIONALLY bad to give it a "garage" feeling. F-off! Furthermore, you can work in any title without being weird - listen to Ace Of Base's "Goldeneye" or Alice Cooper's "Man With The Golden Gun" for example. (Ah, what could have been...) I do agree however that my initial outright hatred of the film has been replaced with your aforementioned "meeeh". 😂

One of my favorite bits in Inside Gaming playthrough of Chaser was when they were replacing words in Bond movies titles with “shit”, and they just said “Quantum of Solace” as is.

Wait, so let me get this straight... You think QoS is a good, but not great Bond film? I didn't quite understand your feelings until you said it 6 times, but it didn't sink in until you said it on the even 12th time.

Ah the old Quantum of Solace isn't very good argument but more gets written about this Bond Film than any other. I think they are still trying to establish what Daniel Craig's Bond is but only finding it in the edit. This video is really interesting kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdt4iMeqqN_IkXk.htmlsi=I5Ea_Ku6gxCu63NU

1. Madonna's Die Another Day was already a thing. 2. So was All Time High. 3. You include Adele's Skyfall in your Top Three Worst Bond Themes. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I can't agree with yours. At least, not when it comes to Bond theme songs.

Sadly a wasted opportunity, suffering from a case of Bourne-itis with the whiplash editing which ruins the action scenes since your eyes are spending more time trying to make sense of what is happening than enjoying what is happening. Btw, would someone explain why the director intercut an exciting foot chase with a horse race which sapped all energy and momentum from the chase? Just saying. Anyway, Greene says at the Quantum meet - it is the world's most important resource and we need to control as much as we can. Everyone (CIA, MI-6, etc) thinks its oil he is referring to. It actually is water. Oil reps the old (industrial) world. Whoever controls the world's water supply - could hold the world govts hostage. Bolivia is just the start of Quantum's plan and with global warming and water supply being a massive concern in the next decade, this might actually be one of the best villain schemes in Bond. Wish the film could have played up the scale and vision of the plan beyond the third world banana republic aspect which robs it of its true sinister nature.

25 years of Bond films being eh? Goldeneye one of the biggest Bonds ever spawning a video game people still get dewy eyed about today? That was not an eh film. And the only thing really crap about Quantum was the on the nose derivative callback to Goldfinger and everyone overlooks Judi Dench does some of her best acting in this film.

@@StamFine hmmmm, I'd debate the most too frankly, that's a big statement and are you counting 25 years back from this particular film cos if you are that only includes the Brosnan films and I would say that's about even since he only did 4 films, the first two which are good, and only the second two being your ascribed eh. Though that boat chase in The World is not Enough was superb.

The poor story construction, the choppy editing, the underwritten characters, Bond is a homicidal maniac, the bland title song, there's a lot more going on than just a poor homage to Goldfinger. Quantum is the worst Bond film of all time.
