Stam Fine looks at the rather ordinary 1974 Bond story, The Man With the Golden Gun, a great idea about two killers hunting each other. Which, fittingly enough, is based on a fairly ordinary Ian Fleming book. Roger Moore is back as James Bond 007, along with Christopher Lee as the eponymous Man With The Golden Gun, and this time, it’s an actual Gun, not a euphemism. Britt Ekland, Maud Adams and Herve Villechaize also star.

Aah, those were the days. When even the weakest entry to the Bond canon to date was still 'watchable and entertaining'. How times have changed.

Of the 'official; Bonds, there's only one I really dislike because it's aggressively bad, and that's one Brosnan film in particular (who I otherwise quite like).

@@StamFine I loved all the Bond films up to and including Casino Royale. Since which they have increasingly failed to fulfill my expectations. In fact, I found 'Spectre' simply boring and rather pretentious. I can forgive the latter (at a push) but the former is not an adjective I expect to apply to a Bond movie.

It may not have been the best Bond movie, but damn, it had the best Bond villain. Can you believe that Scaramanga in the book was originally a big burly guy with curly ginger hair? Think they went the right way with Christopher Lee. He's like the 'Anti-Bond,' a perfect foil for Bond.

I'll never understand why this movie gets so much criticism. It has the best Bond villain ever in Scaramanga, I mean, how do you get better than Christopher Lee? You don't. I'll always go to bat for this movie, it rocks.

Finding the Golden Gun while playing multiplayer on Goldeneye 64 was as good as Total Recalls version of the third nipple. I love Christoper Lee.

It's such a pity the rights to Goldeneye 64 are so convoluted that a remake is unlikely to be officially released (as opposed to nearly finished and shelved because it's too hard to get all the rights holders to agree).

@@StamFine A new version would be nice, but it would be almost impossible to recreate the experience of four slightly inebriated twenty something's huddled around a 32" TV playing split screen, and being able to find immediate retribution against who ever is playing Oddjob and is hoarding the Golden Gun.

The name is Goldeneye 007, but yeah, the Golden Gun in multiplayer mode is a deadly experience, but I find it more fun in singleplayer.

This was the first Bond film I ever saw (I was around 11). It was also one of the last I saw for many years. However, I was always impressed with the corkscrew jump. Moreso when I learned that it was the first stunt ever to be modelled/simulated on a computer before being constructed and performed.

Honestly, for all the movie's faults, Scaramanga's little base is probably my favourite Bond villain lair. ...all it really needs are some magnetic rollercoasters I also loved the idea that the villain is a fan of Bond, and almost a stalker -- and the dorky way he shows off his lair and his plans as if he's looking for approval.

Not quite one of the better Bond movies, but certainly had the best villain. I love Scaramanga. He's an anti-Bond, sharing the same skill and whatnot, only he's bad, like 006. He actually could've got Bond a couple times in the movie, but plot armor stopped him. But his weapon, the Golden Gun, that thing was DESIGNED to kill. I have fond memories of using it in Goldeneye 007 along with the gun that crossed Bond and Scaramanga's guns into one: the Gold PP7. But what so many people don't realize is that the Golden Gun was originally a gold .45 revolver in the novel, plus Scaramanga also had a non-instant kill golden derringer as a backup. The DY357-LX in Perfect Dark is the nearest we can experience to the novel Scaramanga.

Fleming died before he could finish the book, he didn't get the chance to polish it up as he did with the previous installments. The book was actually finished by the publisher, thus the end result.

Roger Moore was a bit hit and miss for me, he was 45 when he made this movie and by the time he did View to a Kill he was in his late 50's and it's not like a had an action stars physique, so I think it was harder to pull off, but he did bring a certain charm to the role.

This movie was the one that had the most going for it but it utterly failed to connect any of it in execution. Since there was no grand villain scheme, just a location where Scaramanga would fight Bond, the movie is just wasting time until it could get Bond there. INSTEAD of that, it should have been a worldwide cat and mouse game.... or at the very least, entirely The Most Dangerous Bond.

A "TV movie" would not have had that bit of shirtless and skin scenes, as it does in this entry (which sought to capitalise on the mainstreaming of porn trend at the time). In the early '70s, "Cubby" and Harry alternated in producing the films, i.e. the former did for #7 and this, and Harry for LALD (though both shared formal screen credits as producers for all three).
