This was very helpful for me, I recently inherited my mother's collection of stamps and was given a clear perforation gauge like the one on the far right. I couldn't understand the way the instructions were describing how to use it but I understood immediately after watching this.

I'm getting back to philately after many, many years...three decades probably...and being older, I want to do it systematically and seriously. I read about perforation gauges in a Facebook post, and checked on KZfaq to learn more about them. The first video I fell upon was yours and it more than adequately explains it. I need not look for further guidance. Thank you for a well explained video.

My go-to perf-gauge is a Una-Safe, which I've had for about 12 years. It hasn't peeled off and I use it often! I also have the Showgard one to measure 1/4 perfs, but I don't like it very much. I had a Clearview, but I've misplaced it. I need to buy another one, which I'll use to measure 1/4 perfs with similar look-and-feel as my favorite Una-Safe. (Then the Showgard will just be a back-up). I have a Guide Line gauge but I find it difficult to use, so it sits in a drawer, unused.

This is very useful. I used to go with a very classic cardboard perf-gage which cost me 1 dollar when I was very young. Recently, I got a Perfotron - which is an electronic perforation reader. Basically it’s like a passport reader: you put the stamp in its slide-in space and it reads the perforation to 2 decimals or rounds to standard quarters. Super useful. HOWEVER, a transparent one like you show is still the only deal for stamps in pockets / on envelopes etc.

Glad you liked the video! That perfotron sounds neat, I will have to look it up, sounds like it could be a bit expensive though.

Can I leave the stamp on a postcard and still use a guage?

The perf gauge made in the U.S.A are far more superior. They are printed into the metal. Where as the ones made in China and Taiwan are like you say, printed onto a layer of thin plastic. Which in time, peel off.

I use the Lighthouse perforation gauge: www.lighthouse.us/perforation-gauge.html It is inexpensive and shows the quarters but the disadvantage is that it has two sides, so you often have to turn it around, depending on the perforation. I'm curious to know what features are on the $25 perforation gauge that would justify that price.

The $25 may be an inflated amazon price. I just googled the gauge now and found it for under $14 plus shipping. Too far off one sees nothin'!Some still never learn using youtube " professsors" when measuring perforations. Some measuring edge to edge full stamp. Some measure only the frame inside the stamp ..then the ones who see this think they got a million wirth stamp and dump it on ebay saying is rare😒.
