How To Adjust Your Car Mirrors To Eliminate Blind Spots SAE

Adjusting their vehicle's mirrors is something all drivers do as a normal routine. But according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Car and Driver Magazine, it's also something that most of us are probably doing wrong! I read an article published in Car and Driver about a paper written by the SAE, in which the SAE laid out the best way to adjust your mirrors in order to eliminate dangerous blind spots. It opened my eyes and made me change how I was doing it, so I wanted to share that with you. I've also included a link below to the original article where this information came from and I recommend that you read it for yourself. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, but neither the video nor the comments mention wide panoramic mirror. That's sad, because no adjustment will fully eliminate blind spots. SAE guys'd better recommend that device to all car manufacturers.
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 6 жыл бұрын
That would be a great idea if the car manufacturers would make that standard. I think that's the case with some European cars, but definitely not here in the USA. I recommend using blind spot mirrors in conjunction with this mirror set up - used together, they can considerably reduce the size of unavoidable blind spots. Those are quite popular too, though I didn't like it much - one still has to move his head far right and they are too small to be 100% sure in every situation. If it's panoramic mirror - everything is visible instantly with no head movement.

I can also vouch for this. Been using this mirror setup for about a year or two and my confidence has sky rocketed. It allows you to have a 360/panoramic view of the cars behind you which is excellent for putting you at ease when changing lanes and being aware of the cars around you. What used to be a scary maneuver became a piece of cake for me due to this mirror setup.

I'm using this mirror-settings for 38 years now. Works perfect! Important on highways: Always look into the inside mirror FIRST to see, if a fast car is approaching. Then check left mirror, before you change lanes.

Also: since these mirrors are facing where your blind spot used to be, the cars may appear closer than they used to in the old setup. I had a small close call when I first tried out the setup. Wasn't close enough to be actually worrying but it was a little bit worrying

I tried this yesterday . . . . very weird, but it took me only a day to get used to it. As one person said, it gives you confidence on the road. I use blind spot mirrors to see my side inside when backing up. Since we drive forward most of the time it makes sense to me to set the side mirrors properly as demonstrated in this video by Stan, and use those small blind spot mirrors for backing up. Thank you, Stan.

Thank you for the video. I had read about this some 20 years ago and had been using this method. I was only about 2 yrs with my driver's license so it was easier to switch. This method makes a big difference. I vouch for it. That article also said twisting your head to check over the shoulder could lead to you driving towards that direction and crash on to a car that is in the blind spot with the "classical way" of adjusting the mirror. So adopt this method and try avoid looking over the shoulder.

I have discovered this myself since I started driving in my 20's and everybody thought it was incorrect. I could not care what other people thought because it made my driving safer. I did not meet anybody that uses the side mirrors like I do and like the SAE recommends. To precisely adjust them, I do it on the freeway, when a car passing me on the side and disappears from my rear view mirror, it has to appear in my side view mirror. Now I will use this video and showed it to my wife so she understands that her husband can be right even when it goes against the majority of people... ;)

There is something to be said for using your turn indicators as so many people do not, and to change lanes slowly despite pressure from anyone tailgating you. Lateral acceleration into the hole you see that you are going to insert your vehicle into is key to avoiding accidents and you survey that hole you are going to move into long before you move there; either to the left or to the right. Good video and information. Shall try the set-up.

You're welcome! I also recommend using small blind spot mirrors in addition to this mirror set up. Point them so that they show you the area close beside your vehicle. These will help you when backing or when driving in close-in traffic where you have bicycles, motorcycles, and even pedestrians right up next to your vehicle. Thanks for watching.

I replace the over the shoulder check by leaning my head the way you adjusted the mirrors. This brings into my eyeballs the parts that I wasn’t seeing (where a motorcycle might be). But it also leaves my eyes pointing forward. This means that if I am trying to make a lane change in uncooperative traffic, I can be checking the other lane and be ready in case the car in front of me brakes suddenly.

I'm most fortunate for stumbling upon this video, as this setup has really helped me with regards to dealing with oncoming traffic in my blindspots. However it takes some time getting used to but once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back to any previous settings you used for your side mirrors. Also, in as much as this helps with regular to large vehicles you still need to look over your shoulder for motorcycles if you're changing lanes irrespective.

I live in abroad and when I was taking my mandatory one driving lesson before getting my license here (at age 58!, after having driven since i was 16), I turned my head slightly before moving to the left lane and my instructor could not understand what I was doing. Turns out it is a sure fail on the test if you turn your head! So it's great to get these tips.
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, they failed you on your test! Some instructors might give you a little grace on something like that, but most do want you to keep your eyes on the road ahead and use your mirrors. I love this mirror setup and have used it for quite a while, but to be honest, I do still take a very quick look back before changing lanes. If you're constantly monitoring all your mirrors, you can often make lane changes safely without looking back over your shoulder. In the end, all that matters is pleasing the driving instructor during the test, isn't it! Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.

I read in the Toronto Star several years ago how to adjust my mirrors exactly as explained. IT WORKS !!! Race car drivers do not look over their shoulder when speeding around the track and require a panoramic view of cars behind them. Follow Stan's instructions , he is 100 % correct. This system has really worked for me! Very happy with the results while freeway driving, as I am often being passed by others. It does have one drawback, which is that adjusting this way doesn't let me easily see the side of my car when backing into a parking spot. I solved that problem with paste-on auxillary mirrors; basically a sliver mirror attached to the bottom of my side-views, giving me a proper view of the parking lines when backing up, or for the always challenging parallel parking situations.

Hi Stan - thanks for the video! What is problematic with this information is the words "eliminate blind spots!" As you stated at the end of the video, this system does not work for smaller road users: motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and pedestrians. And therefore, when the SAE indicates that it "eliminates blind spots", it moves drivers to stop checking their blind spots by shoulder (head) checking. I wouldn't recommend this system for either novice or experienced drivers because no matter how the mirrors are adjusted, it is NOT going to "eliminate blind spots" especially on larger vehicles. Thanks Cheers Rick
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 7 жыл бұрын
Very true...it's virtually impossible to totally eliminate blind spots, as no one has a system that enables you to see 360 degrees around your vehicle. But this mirror setup does give the advantage of seeing a panoramic view of vehicles coming up behind you and passing you. This is better than what most people in many driving environments use, which is why the SAE recommends it. It improves safety, but doesn't guarantee total elimination of driving hazards. Many people use it, and I can vouch for it in most situations, particularly interstate/highway driving. I also recommend blind spot mirrors in addition to this, as no one mirror setup is perfect. But I still believe this is better than most, and that anyone can benefit from it. The alternative is bigger blind spots around your vehicle. Thank you for your comment and observations!

Sorry Rick, but I have NO BLIND SPOTS on either side of my car or big rig. Many years ago I made a booklet showing how correct mirror adjustment eliminates so called "blind spots". I have one booklet for cars and one for a big transport truck. You CAN NOT hide a car on the right or the left with this correct system. In both booklets I have my daughter and my son on bicycles in the so called "blind spot". They are clearly visible in the correctly adjusted mirrors. I like to offer $1,000 bucks to anyone who can hide a small car on the right or left of my car or rig. No one has ever been able to claim that $1,000 yet. All cars now come with safety convex mirrors on the right side, and to be fair Rick, I have carefully mounted an auxiliary convex mirror just below my left flat mirror. Go ahead! Try to hide a small car on the right or left of my vehicle. You can not do it.

Thanks for the video Mr Stan. I did apply this in the first days after getting my driving license so I got used to it pretty fast. And I did try the traditional method once and almost got into an accident twice because I changed lanes without being able to see the other car next to me. Also, I try to show this video to everyone I know so that they can drive the safe way. But unfortunately, I did get to arrogant comments that they've been driving for years with the traditional method and they think that they're right using that way. Anyways, thanks for sharing the great tip and I'm sure the you've helped to prevent a lot of accidents for new drivers including me.

Thanks for the video. With the way they design modern cars in 2019/2020 to account for all the newer airbags, there are increased blindspots all throughout the car, especially the "A-Columns," under the front mirror (because there are all those camera and radar detections there), and smaller rear windows with higher rear ends of cars.
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, blind spots seem to be getting bigger instead of smaller, so anything a driver can do to eliminate or decrease the size of them will help. I'm sure that some day the driver assistance systems will be so good that blind spots will be a moot point, but that day still seems a ways off. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
