You, as a POWERED RIDER, can quickly set this hammock support up in about 10 minutes & take it down in about 8 minutes - the parts can be carried by a person in one hand (about 13 lbs.) & are easily packed on/inside your ride - trials conducted by a tall & heavy person show that the body hangs safely, 4" to 6" off the ground - total cost was about $40 to $50 USA dollars (as of 7/2011) - this is a prototype ... a first effort - feel free to change, modify or lighten the design - BUT ... build & experiment BEFORE you criticize ... just asking.

I followed your design but with a few minor changes. I am using 2x2 pressure treated wood instead of PVC and I'm using 4 Ten inch Coleman stakes instead of anchor nails. I love this design and I want to thank you, Keith, for giving me the idea. I'm 15 years old and I have a portable hammock that I made (including the hammock itself) almost entirely on my own. I still have a few minor changes to make, but I'll be hanging in no time. Thanks again!

Here is a tip for you. If you straddle the hammock, one foot on each side, then open it with your hands, you can then sit down on it without being tossed out. The same in reverse for getting out, drop one foot each side and stand up.

this is smart but you should consider adding a ridge pole exactly like the turtledog hammock stands

I can't tell how tall the one in the video is, but I built one that stands approximately 4' tall with just a few changes. It will double your cost and weight, but still seems cheaper and lighter than most portable hammock stands. I used 4 5' poles of 1" PVC piping with 1" wood dowels inserted through the piping. Additionally I routered 1/2" grooves in the dowels and ran 1/2" rebar through them. Everything else is pretty similar to the product in the video. GREAT IDEA ORIGINAL POSTER!

I wonder if you could get along with less strong anchor points by adding another multi-piece tube as a ridge line pushing the ends apart. That way it would work in sandy or rocky places, although more to bring.

I would have like to see the process of setting it up. How much fussing around with tension is required? How quickly can an experienced person set it up? I think the next project would be adding the ability to string a tarp over it to keep rain off.

Stillusing it, with no revisions, but still waiting for warmer weather to submit a new video, showing a single bipod with a touring-loaded bike- as well as an seat-extended bicycle.

Any idea about how much weight this would hold. I'm more than a little chubby and am wondering if it would hold my weight. Don't have $40-$50 to waste on something that may not hold me. Thanks for the time to do this video. It's a great idea!

I weigh 210lbs. The bipods did not want to hold me. I had to add larger diameter to the outside of the pipes shown. I have yet to try it out. It did, of course, add additional weight.

Great self-build project. For anyone wanting something lighter that's ready-made, we have a similar system that weighs just 3.3 lbs and packs down to the size of a shirt sleeve :)

I suspect that this would be OK - but at the additional weight and bulk disadvantage - I'm currently working on a SINGLE BIPOD design for bicyclists, using the earth-anchored bicycle frame as one attach point + a 4-segment dowel-reinforced PVC pipe shell - waiting for warm weather to test and publish to KZfaq. BTW, for those worldwide folks, it would seem practical to replace the PVC pipe & dowel with bamboo inside bamboo + lashings as substitute for metal parts.

Did you ever end up making a single biopod or any other lighter designs?

are the dowels only to make take-down poles or are they also for adding strength to the pvc?

I like the idea, but I would want them to be taller. I like slack in my hammock.
