Playing For Change

Күн бұрын

In 2005, we recorded Roger Ridley on the streets of Santa Monica playing "Stand By Me." This original live performance was the starting point of our first Song Around The World which has surpassed 120 million views since it was first uploaded to KZfaq 10 years ago today. As we celebrate this milestone, we are happy to share this unreleased video of the moment that started it all. Thank you for continuing to support Playing For Change and for always standing by us. #StandByMe10

ABOUT PLAYING FOR CHANGE:
Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band-a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation-a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

I first saw Roger perform in Grand Central Station, NYC. I stopped in my tracks when I heard his voice. I purchased his cassette tape and learned all the tunes. I’m a bass player and I knew that I would one day perform with this amazing talent. Fast forward a few years and I was hired to put together an act for opening day and night at The US Open Tennis Championship in Flushing,NY. I called Roger and told him I knew his songs and I needed him for two shows. Needless to say..both shows were amazing and every other person came up to him and told him how great he was or that they saw him perform in NYC somewhere. We also had harmonica legend Will Galison on the gigs. Since Roger did not follow tennis I had to give him some coaching since he was “ The Master Of Ceremonies “ His opening line was “I’d like to welcome everyone to the opening of The Open 😊 We got to spend some time between shows and he told me his story.. This was such a special time for me and it was an honor to perform with Roger. He was a wonderful human and I’m so sorry he’s gone. I read through the comments and it’s great to see that he’s missed..

@Daniel P ,greeting daniel p, i am from the other side of the world of new york city. i am korean living in hong kong. busking is quite new in hong kong comparatively. you are fortunate to have a passion and talent for playing music. i have never stopped dead in my tracks such as yourself being fortunate enough listening to a true busker, talented and bringing joy to the world such as roger ridley. hong kong so called subway systems are called mtr, or mass transit railway. there is absolutely no busking in or on hong kong's mtr. i have liked and love pop music since the days of radio, cassettes, and vinyl records. the rock and roll revolution really was a revolution that changed the world. my korean parents were quite liberal regarding music also considering the conservativeness of koreans back then, not like now with k-pop since a decade ago. my father liked western pop music since the days of stand by me, my way, twist and shout, and blue suede shoes. the pop music such the development of k-pop was national decision to develop the republic of korea, after the national decision to develop korean dramas and exporting them. the local chinese hong kong belongers like our korean dramas. daniel p, kindly give this youtube clip of a live performance of a k-pop band : SBS [2013가요대전] - 씨엔블루(CNBLUE) 'Im sorry' a try. my mother was also was a pioneer in western entertainment particularly what is know as modern dancing since the days of the vietnam war. my parents were the first koreans to bring korean live entertainment to countries such as spain and italy with korean cabaret women, dressed in sequins, performing live in night clubs. daniel p, i have made other comments about the so called movement playing for change, about how disgusted i am at comments for playing for change and the movement playing for change. i would like folks to get really organized to get true talented buskers of a particular country of region and play busking music, suitable for folks of a particular country or region, at live aid concerts, once a week in a different part of the world making change into millions, then billions, then trillions to serve humanity. daniel p, i also wish i am talented or more talented that say tina turner's manager who approached tina turner and made a deal with tina turner to get half of the proceeds to which tina turner agreed. check out how tina turner's manager changed and turn around tina turner's so called career. i do not like using the word career. we do not have to say much such a song such as simply the best which still gets folks really going and enjoying. so daniel p, you got roger ripley to play at tennis competitions with you. perhaps you could really dedicate others and yourself, to get true talented buskers of a particular country or region, and organize successfully, to play live aid concerts almost all around the world really successfully and create revolutions. daniel p, kindly allow me to share a treasure of an enlightenment from God during some difficult times in my life which is 'the purpose of a higher education is to pursue one's passions to serve humanity. no educators, nor clergy, nor governments have come up with a better solution to serve most of humanity. you could spread the word in your endeavors with other in the true talented buskers of a certain country or region in busking live aid concerts, once a week, fitting and suitable for a certain country or region. daniel p, i am crippled with seven disabilities. i thought awhile back what the heck to do with my life. i thought for several days, and decided to follow one of Jesus; teachings and answers to a question ask to Him by a wise old man asking what to do with so many problems in the world. Jesus' answer and teaching was to save one life is like saving the world. i rented a sub divided unit in an infamous building named chungking mansions in tsim sha tsui, kowloon, hong kong. i decided to go where folks with troubles to try and help, instead of waiting for folks with troubles to come to me. daniel p, i have also been a third generation refugee escaping the seriousness of war from beirut, lebanon to the greek part of cyprus. my immediate father's family side of family were refugees in mainland china when the demented evil samurai japs invaded korea and did all manners of evil during workd war one. we also suffered in the diaspora in mainland china. my father's older brother was roman catholic priest, as a refugee in mainland china, and was killed by the chinks. when mao tse tung went about his crazy, evil cultural revolution, my father smuggled himself to macau, then a portuguese colony, then to hong kong when it was a british colony. his mother snuggled herself to hong kong and we opened and operated the first korean bbq restaurant illegally on the top floor of a residential building in 1964. we then opened and operated our second korean bbq restaurant in chungking mansions in 1965. chunking mansions was very different to what it is now. it was one of two buildings in hong kong with an escalator. we subsequently opened and operated three more korean bbq restaurants. we donated money from the profits from our korean restaurants to build a church and a seminary in the republic of korea. when i told my mother i rented a sud divided unit in chungking mansions, she freaked out and told me not to bring my girl friends up there, not that i had any intentions of doing so and did not. i started trying to help asylum seekers for eritrea, ethiopia, somalia, cameroon, rwanda and then pakistanis, an argentian, and a english. those who stayed in sub dived units in the same falt as me were all kicked out due to a new lying land lord. i then move to a sub dived unit mongkok. that is where i tried helping chinese triads, one who was homeless sleeping on the street with other triads groups after his inheritance of a flat. i also have tried to be nice a filipina who came to hong kong to help her financially poor sister being and escort and prostitute, to asylum seekers from tobu whose husband and father of two young boys abandoned them to find a chinese woman to get a hong kong identy card, and tried to be nice and tried to help muslim asylum seekers from tartartstan, palestine, iraq, and egypt. i have house rules which are no serious drugs such as ice, heroin, crack, pornography, gambling, playing the stock market, and sex. i even helped an american chinese get out of mental institution. a pakistani, who i helped whom i helped when were in chungking mansions, was in a mental intitution, and when ever he did call me, the american chinese was right by him, and spoke to me on the phone. the chinese american family did not help him, nor did his business partner in vietnam. he also stayed at my place. so did the pakistani before his family sent him back to pakistan. daniel p, should you really endeavor with playing for change with talented true buskers, as live aid concerts world wide as i mentioned, kindly invite me, with all expenses paid. my health has deteriorated much more and one one my neurologist, who knew i did and go bits of being a samaritan, told me, three years ago coming summer to stop being such a samaritan because it was detrimental for my health. she was correct, and i am still doing bits. daniel p, i look forward to you and other true buskers with such playing for change live aid concerts and making revolutions and becoming friends with you. i am also the kind of guy who would like to create a parallel economies, not with fiat currencies created by the powers to be. check out what usa and france did to mohamed ghadaffi when he decided to back up his so called country's currency with gold and wanted to create the united states of africa, and all the damn migration crimes against humanity. be good proactively. be well proactively. be wise proactively. from psychokilller - internatinal beggar, james han. the first person i helped quit smack was a filipino bass player in 1985..i have more experienced now. i have an illegal formula to help heroin addicts quit should the addict really wants to quit, staying with me taking the same formula with me, and the person can go back to work in three weeks. i still spread the word around about this. an older drug dealer was surprised my formula to help heroin addicts quit smack as surprised my formula was the same as his. i have shared by double bed with black, brown, yellow, and white skinned folks. do not be homophobic. some who have stayed with me have been, and slept on the floor when i was poorer and did not have have a pull out sofa bed as i do now. daniel p, i have been doing this for seventeen years now.

@@ulukai_555 Yes he died shortly after this movement. He was amazing, my son & I always hung out & enjoyed him and others on the Promenade/pier. It inspired my son. He told me when he wasn't around anymore, over 10 years ago. Now my son isn't either. They both spread joy & music as they only could.
