For those of you wondering, Covert Go Blue said that one of the moments that made him love magic was watching a tournament be won by a mill deck. That's his villain origin story.

One of the things that made me love this game was winning my first tournament ever with an Academy deck, back then when it was standard legal. Good ol' Tempest. Making your opponent DRAW his deck on turn 3 was priceless 😈

The truest test of a Magic player is how they answer the question: "Who's in control when you're playing against Control?" My take: it's not the Control player who's in control of the game. It's a reactive archetype so the right way to play it is to put them on point for always having the answer to your questions. You dodge and feint with your plays to draw out their answers (and plinking them as you go if they let things through) until they're left with nothing and then you drop your important cards that close out the game. I say this as someone who enjoys being on the side of Control from time to time as well. I NEVER feel in control of a game until the opponent is in top-deck mode and I have a grip full of answers. At that point skill test #2 comes in: can you identify when you've lost the game and it's best to move on to the next?

Hey Ash, did you consider using Farsight Ritual in place of memory deluge? It's 2UU Instant. Bargain. Look at the top 4 Cards of your library put 2 in hand and 2 bottom the other 2 in a random order, if this spell was bargained look at the top 8 instead. This opens lines like cycling your clue tokens or small incubators post sunfall or use a spare cornicopia to dig. Would also enable lines like curve into temp lockdown turn 3, turn 4 bargain it on opps endstep to dig for a wrath or set up the turn. In this list every card aside from jace, no more lies, and the creatures can pay for the bargain. Oh and the map tokens from anchorage can be used to dig too!
@EggsAreGood55

Many things seem off with this shell and I believe could be improved. First, I would not run any pain lands in a control deck as a baseline. 25 lands is also a tad too few. If you don't want to go overboard I'd settle for 26. Second, there aren't that many spells to trigger Beans, so I'd experiment by cutting that in favor of maybe a package of Spelunking + tapped duals (if we aim to keep things in bant colors). Third, there not enough instant speed spot removal do deal with every BS creature that can solo you and you'll probably die before getting to cast a board wipe. I'd look into adding maybe some Elspets Smites in the main or something similar. This is from someone who played a fair amount of control in current standard and these are the points I see to improve. The rest, we'll see what the next set brings. Cheers and keep doing a good job with the videos!

Is Aven Interrupter playable in standard? I find it can essentially skip an opponent's 3rd or 4th turn and disrupt the tempo of the more aggro decks. Blocks show-off and can re-plot it with the extra 2 mana tax.

It's actually good in mid-range decks to delay sweepers, but not in control decks, in my opinion. It's also way too slow against monored and boros.

@LaurentCassaro I play kind of a weird pio aggro control list, and Aven is often helping close out games alongside Surge Engine/Bank Bustie Besties. It's probably not as good in regular control with more sweepers.

Cornucopia is great, but it feels like it's made for a different kind of deck. You just don't have enough 2 color spells to make it work. Maybe in Naya, with lighting helix, annie joins up and maybe quintorius? Idk. Right now it seems hard to find a home for it other than domain.

I learned to never say I like control, like hot damn the toxic reactions I have gotten... Anyway, I personally think it's more fun in paper and in a friendly environment. On Arena you get spammed "Your go" for anything that takes more than 2 seconds (but then they have the time to rope you anyway like wtf). The only rotation safe deck I currently have is Mono Black Discard and I don't like playing it (and against it) at all, despite having an 80% winrate with it. Yet somehow I mostly read about blue/control hate. Idk, but having to constantly discard (super fun when you had to mulligan..), playing with an open hand (thanks Bat...) and a ton of removal plus super high value creatures, graveyard recursion, deathtouch and lifelink.. I always have the feeling Black is pretty busted, but that's just it: a personal opinion. If people have to insult others for playstyles they don't like, maybe check your priorites in life and do as the kids say: touch some grass. And I think the beauty of Magic is having all those different archetypes. You don't need to like them all, but playing them yourself, can help you tons for when you play against them later. Sorry for the rant, but yay algorithm and stuff. Get well soon Ash and thanks for the videos!

@@LaurentCassaro I love mono red as well, both playing myself and playing against. Most games are over on turn 4, some even turn 3, it's nicely quick. Perfect for the daily wins. But I am not sure I'd enjoy it playing in paper (hard to tell, when no one near me plays Magic IRL and I have to travel 2h for something like Pre-Releases, last time for Wilds of Eldraine, soon again for Bloomburrow). Agree with the roping, I can just watch something on a second monitor while they throw their little tantrum. I mean, they're wasting their time as well, so... :D
